We are going for our first ever camping trip with kids in January. Tane will turn 2 while we are there and Gabrielle is 3. We have all the gear and the camp ground has toilets and showers etc.... I am really looking forward to it!! Just my only concern is my boy is a bit of a wanderer!! Any tips for things to take to help keep the kids occupied?

Take some felts and colouring in books. and things like jigsaw puzzles that they can do quietly.

We are going camping for a week as well just after xmas and over new year. I have a 6 year old and a will be 11 month old. Hopefully it will be ok with one so young, I'm sure it will be.

Camping with kids is great!!

I found sleep times a bit of a challenge, had to sit in the tent with them sometimes, oh, and don't always expect them to go to bed at night at their usual time!

As for wandering children, just go play in the water - especially with boys - keeps them entertained for hours. I think we even took a paddling pool one year, then you can hang out at your campsite and under umbrellas/awnings to get the heat of the day off you.

Have fun camping everyone, we hope to head out in the new year with our 1 and 3 year old boys.

Yay I am really excited! Not worried about bed time at all as they can sleep in as late as they want and have naps etc any time - love that we will have no time pressures for a whole week and can completely go with the flow.

We will definitly be out and about doing things so maybe we will wear them out so much that when we want to wind down at our camp site they will be too tired to wander off. Not worried about Miss 3 as she isn't one to go far away from me but I can see the boy running into other people's tents etc!!

I have bought a book for them for their xmas present - the complete collection of winnie the pooh by a a milne. It is a beautiful hardcover with a case - can't wait to read them a chapter or two a night.

Since it is the boys birthday while we are away (on our second day) I thought I would get him something to keep him occupied at our site but I haven't really thought of anything yet....

We love camping. DD first went camping at about 5months.

We went last weekend at she loved it. We were at a DOC site by a river and I was worried I would spend the whole time keeping her away from it but she was more interested in chilling out on her wee camping chair and playing with her new ball!

We always take books, ball, bubble mixture (the 'grab-a-bubbles are good as they land on things without popping then they can spend ages finding bubbles to pop) and stuff to draw with.

ahhhh....I want to go again this weekend now

Camping is such a great thing to do with kids! Good on you!

There are some great travel chalk mats available. Portable and lightweight. Might pay to buy a little extra chalk for the trip though :) Saves taking tons of felt pens, crayons and books.

Buy chalk mats here

Sorry to hijack the thread...how do you guys deal with security while camping? Does someone stay with your site while others go off to do stuff etc?

We just trust everyone and leave our stuff at the campsite. Our handbag/wallets/cameras stay locked in the car at all times but the rest of the camping stuff is just left out. People do tend to keep an eye out for for wanderers, we are very aware of what activity goes on around us when we camp.

Most campsites have a playground, be prepared to hang out there for a looong time .

My DD likes to wander around, so we walk a lot when we are camping. Just walks around the campground, or on the beach, and in the water.

It will be great fun!

We camp on private land so security isn't an issue (all family).

As for camping with kids, last year ava was 4 months and suffering from reflux - not fun! And Jack was 2. This year Jack will be nearly 3 and Ava 16 months. We camp right next to a large river (so close that our tent pegs go into the river bank) so it's a matter of keeping the kids occupied. My hubby is away this year so I've got to be vigilant, so I'll be making a routine where we go down to the river at set times (after meals and snacks) so the kids know when they can go and hopefully that will stop jack especially wandering.

Activities - trikes/bikes, colouring in stuff, books, matchbox cars for boys (and girls!) are all good. We have no running water, no kitchen and have to empty our own toilets so I'll be involving Jack in as many jobs as possible to keep him busy - he loves helping (maybe not the toilet one though!)
