Topic: Were all your babies alike? Posted: 25 October 2010 at 4:22pm |
I'm nearly ready to take the plunge into the madness of another baby, but given my first baby has been very challenging, I'm more than a little hesitant, and I'd like some idea of my chances of getting another one like her!
So, if one of your babies had reflux, did they all? And as bad?
Did they have similar sleep patterns and start sleeping long stretches at similar ages?
Were they generally similar in attitude?
Thanks muchly

Hey hun. You've got to have more babies, get those lovely genes out there
They're not my babies, but since I'm quite a bit older than my younger brothers and sisters, I knew them as babies, and they were all very different. In fact Mum tells us we all were. I know Sarah was a particularly difficult baby for getting Mum up, and on the other hand Matthew was sleeping through pretty much from the word go. And I apparently had quite bad reflux, so Mum was bracing herself when she had Ben, and he didn't at all.

Alex is only like 2 weeks old but so far hes very very different from Daniel.
Daniel didn't wanna feed at all, BF was a total battle every feed. Alex is a piglet with no issues whatsoever.
Daniel was a mega screamer, wake up and scream for food. Alex just chills out, he only ever cries if hes uncomfy from wind or if you expose his feet of all things lol
Daniel was all over the place with feeding/sleeping as in no routine that he made. Alex is like clockwork so far.
Alex just seems like a much more laid back baby than Daniel was. I'm not complaining

my kids are both really similar in the way they are so chilled, will go to anyone, are scarily happy and smiley but still have different personalities so far.
both boys had reflux and neither were sleeping through the night before 6 months for my oldest and my 5 month old doesnt sleep through. but once you feed them over night they have always crashed strait away. my youngest is worse with morning sleeps but we didnt make any effort to be honest cos i didnt wanna stay at home all day just cos i already had another child and still wanted to go out with them.
i think even if you end up with the same issues next time you are better equiped to deal with them which makes it heaps easier. kids are normally very different as far as sleeping and feeding and stuff though

My second is WAY more chilled than my first! My first has a big personality, was challenging from day one, my second is only 2 weeks old but is very different already!
I had a bit of trouble getting her back to sleep the other night, like it took 10 mins rather than straight back - was telling my mum she cracked up and asked me did she actually cry! Great question cause she hardly ever does...
So yep very different kids!

Both very very different!
2nd is an awesome sleeper, compared to her big brother who didnt sleep through the night till he was close to 1, and had to be rocked/cuddled to sleep. (Although i think a lot of this is due to me learning from number1!)
Number 1 was a big mover, rolling in the first month, crawling by 6 months, always on the get go - number 2 still doesnt roll and seems like she'll be a stationary bub FOREVER!
Number 1 wanted to be fed and eat ALL the time, whereas number 2 is more chilled but certainly lets u know when its food time.
Personality wise, quite similar - so chilled and happy in some regards, quite high maintenance in others lol

Thanks ladies, nice to know it might be easier next time. And you raise a good point Monikah - that I already know how to deal with many of her issues so even if the next one is as bad I'll cope better.
Thanks Hopes I'll definitely be breeding again, it's more a matter of when. I guess I have to expect the next one to be another shocker just in case, and then be pleasantly surprised if it's not.

My two are like chalk and cheese.
C has always been smiley, outgoing and independant.
Ty is a lot more relaxed and a bit more serious, he wont smile for you unless he knows you well...C on the other hand would (and still does) flash that smile for anyone

My 2 were completely different. IMO having a challenging 1st child is far better than having a chilled first baby and a challenging 2nd. As Monikah pointed out you'll already be prepared with coping strategies, I was so if DS had been as hard as DD was I would have been ok. The fact that he was so easy was a bonus.

Totally different!
DS was a laid back easy going baby and is pretty much the same now at 2.4 years old, apart from the normal toddler tantrums etc.
DD, woweeee, now she can be a right little madam! lol!
Had bad reflux as a wee bubba so spent most of the time crying and in pain , and now is a very demanding toddler(14 months). She gets stroppy easily and is a bit of a pincher and a hitter, not sure why....but im trying to kick that in the bud before she gets worse. She also has a very sweet side to her though, cuddly and gives kises
So yeah, my two are polar oppersites and best friends

I can't comment on on my situation as only have the 1, but just going on hearing from what my mum has told me of the differences between myself and my 2 sisters, my oldest sister was fairly good but on the go. My middle sister was hard work (in my mum's words), cried all the time, hardly ever slept, alot more sensitive and then I was a textbook baby, slep through from an early age and was very laidback.
I think if you have a tough ride with your first you will be more prepared for it second time around. Im a bit worried as DS is pretty good, sleep wise, did have reflux early on but that has passed so I'm hoping that whenever babe no 2 happens, that we won't be thrown a curveball with a tougher baby.

it's good to see everyone's responses as I have been thinking about this latley and am quietly a bit worried...DS was such a cruisy baby, fed when he was hungry, slept when he was tired (most of the time) and hardley ever cried. So i'm preparing myself for a hard work baby this time round as I think surley ya cant have 2 cruisers in a row! So I figure if I prepare for the worst and if it's not as bad then i'm lucky lol

Yip I'm sorta hoping that they'll be different in some ways but also think I'll be better prepared as it won't be such a learning curve as the first and I'm going to try and be more relaxed and just have to go with the flow of what the two little ones require.
I think you'll be fine with two and a fantastic mum to both of them T_Rex.

I've had two very different babies. Right from sleeping to allergies/reflex. The trade off of no allergies or mild ones with no day sleeps but wicked night sleeps to the one with major problems who slept like a dream during the day & constantly woke & still does'nt sleep through.
So chalk & cheese but being a mum for the second time you are definitely more chilled, basically cause it's all not foreign.

I'm slightly different, in that my two are the same age...but they're still very different!!! Jade is quite a demanding, attention seeking child who will give kisses and cuddles away to anyone who wants them....Amber is more reserved, but very cheeky.
It goes to show that it really is nature over nurture, because there hasn't been any difference between them in how the girls are raised...

Totally agree with being more chilled second time round! I kinda just plodded along, But!! it was a REAL slap in the face having such a hard baby second time and a chilled out baby first time! That was hard to deal with for a while there

no reflux thankfully... sorry haven't read replies but i have heard there is a high chance of susequent babies having it if your first did..
no to similar sleep patterns... (mine are 2 yrs 4 days apart) and no 1 slept three hours at a time and didnt need to be fed in the night from 5-6 months and only needed dummy replacement...
number two slept 45 mins a time in day time from birth till 5 months and now normal 1.5 hours or so.. and still wakes to be fed twice a night though he self settles which is great.
and no they are totally different...partly cause I'm more relaxed and Liam has been around more people but Ethan gets upset easy and takes a while to warm up Liam loves anyone and everything..both have awesome sense of humour though :) but yeah they are quite different..

#1 was a very happy baby, but he was very demanding, he needed a lot of entertaining all the time, and so I found that hard
#2 & # 3 - twins, had reflux, and were premmies, so they have had issues just because of that, so time consuming on another level. A lot different from #1
#4, he is the most content baby ever, he is so different from the other 3, he is laid back, and just goes with the flow.
So 4 (3) different experiences
