Topic: Wellys Day Trip - What to do? Posted: 12 July 2010 at 12:44pm |
I'm contemplating a day trip to wellys tomorrow. Just because I can basically lol..
Usually I head to petone beach and have lunch with the lad, do some shopping etc or go diving. I obviously won't be diving (brrrrr!!!) so what else could me and the lad do?

My fella is the same age as your guy and He loves the waterfront. The weather is supposed to be good tomorrow too. We are going in to the little beach/playground beside the pool on oriental parade another spot is the usual TePapa but if you go in to the bush garden there there is a huge sandpit to dig for dinosaurs. we usually bring his bike or his skooter and he just likes riding around. The botonic gardens is a good spot too.

Have you been on the cable car? You can take it up to the botanical gardens. Karori Wildlife Santuary is pretty cool too.

Its funny, I can find my way around lower hutt/petone without too much problem but wellys itself I just have no idea lol. I think I'll have to stick to a couple of things since I won't have a guide and the 2 people who I know would wanna see me will be working *pouty*
I was thinking about the zoo for Daniels sake. I wonder what he would make of the cable car.. he would either love it or hate it.
Digging for dinosaurs???

The cable car runs of Lambton Quay and is next to McDonald's I'm sure that would persuade him. Have you been to Percy's Reserve in Lower Hutt?

I would suggest parking in Te Papa ($12 for the day) and then do the Waterfront and Te Papa discovery centres.
We've taken the girls on the waterfront with their scooters to and it's been great fun.
Frank Kitts Park is good

Agree with Tishy, if you're not that confident parking at Te Papa and making your way around the waterfront seems like a good plan!

Ooh yeah Te Papa is great out by the cafe is the sandpit and you can dig a dinosaur.
Or you could go Botanical Gardens for a walk, maybe the Carter Observatory?
Hutt ways... Hmm how about H2o extreme and both go swimming? Or Percy's Reserve is always nice.
Don't know if you are aware but they've upgraded the motorway/lanes along that stretch of road from Petone - Melling.
Petone - the Old Settlers Museum? Although that can get a bit boring with little ones...
Cable Car could be fun for him - ride it to the top and you can get off at the Carter Observatory.
The Karori or Wilton Wildlife sancturaries are great.
The Zoo was getting upgraded and not sure if thats completed yet BUT parking would be a pita due to school holidays. Although you could catch the train from Petone and then bus from the train station or something like that!
What about catching the Ferry from Eastbourne to the CBD and going for lunch then catching it back?

You've given me lots of ideas for next time Nic!
We are gonna try the zoo first as I think he will enjoy the animals the most and we are leaving early and it doesnt take me long to get down there with my driving so will see what the parking etc is like and if that sucks then will head to te papa

We went to the zoo, had some early lunch in the cafe while it was nice and quiet in there. Wondered around, got somethings from the shop there. Then went out to petone beach so Daniel could play and go down the wharf which he loves and had a 2nd lunch/afternoon tea there and went home via the haywards.
Next time I'll do the te papa thing probably. I so hate driving around wellys. I missed the lovely gridwork wide streets, no hills of palmy! lol

Yeah, I said Daniel wasn't 3 yet so he got in for free. So it was just $20 for me and I just got him a couple of plastic animal toys to add to his collection so that came to $10 and lunch for me was $10 I think and nothing for him cause I took lunch for him with me. Good day out that wasn't very costly in the end. Doesn't cost much in diseal to get down there.
