Hi,

We are going to a 30th tomorrow night from 8pm-12 and Mum is going to babysit our 7 month old for us. We live in a different city so he hasn't seen her very much, we last saw her about 6 weeks ago. She lives on the North Shore and we stay at my Dad's place in Greenlane, so it is a bit of a drive and we can't stay at hers 'cos she only has a 1-bedroom place.

Mum thinks it will be best if I just drop ds off at her work at 4pm tomorrow and then she will take him to her place, then we will pick him up at 12 and bring him back to Dad's for the rest of the night. I am a bit worried about him not having a chance to spend any time with both her and myself before I leave him with her.

Any suggestions? Am I just being overly anxious, or should I insist on going over to her place and settling him in (which means dh will have to come all the way over the bridge to get me then back into town)?

TIA

I think it would be better if she comes to your place as your son would be famililar with your place as he knows it.

he could be unsettled going to a different place with someone he doesnt know that well.

least by staying home he will be in his own bed. and you wont have to wake him to put him back in the car and then trying to settle him again.

I agree - your place would be far better. My son is 7mo and I wouldn't leave him at my mother's place. He's not adaptable to sleeping elsewhere, though - only his bed. But he knows my mum fairly well but he's used to me putting him to bed and his familiar place.

So yeah - definitely your's if you can manage it, otherwise I'm afraid he's going to very unsettled and a handful for your mum and she might be reluctant to do it again!

I'd definitely get her to come to your place too. It will be easier for your baby if he's in familiar surroundings.

I agree with the others. It's always easier when baby is in comfortable and fimiliar surroundings. Plus everything is already baby proofed and ready to go.

At the end of the day though I wouldn't stress. Babies adapt really quickly and it's not like it's a total stranger it's your Mum. She's a pro at this baby thing so give her some credit She raised you so even if he's upset at first she'll know how best to distract him. I used to always stress when others would watch my kids but everytime I'd come home I'd be almost disapointed to find they had cried when I walked out but then stopped 2mins later and forgot about me

I'm guessing that her coming to yours might not work though since you live with your Dad, but I'd definitely go to her place and spend some time settling him in and having some of his stuff around. Has he slept in the travel cot or whatever he's going to sleep in before? Maybe try him in that for his day sleeps today so that's at least familiar and put something in his cot with your scent maybe?

That's great that your Mum is so confident but I think it would put you at ease and allow you to enjoy yourself more if you know he's ok at your Mum's.
