Topic: Help please! (feeding questions) Posted: 25 January 2010 at 8:14pm |
So due to supply issues and nothing being able to increase my supply I have decided to move to formula full time for Lexie. I am pretty gutted that breast feeding isn't working for me but it got to the point that I was possibly going to have a starving baby if I didn't implement forumla! I have a few questions though,
I have been demand feeding while breastfeeding, what is the best way now with formula, so far I have just been trying to feed her on the 3 hour mark. Her first formula feed was today at 3 we managed to get to 5:45 before her next one and she so far has started getting fussy around the two hour mark but we are able to settle her with either her dummy or at the moment DP is playing her lullabyes and she is quite happy.
Is she likely to have more trouble bringing up her wind being bottle fed? Just I have noticed she isn't bringing up as much as she was before and gets a little fussy about it and it seems to take a fair effort to get her to bring it up.
Whats the best way to deal with letting my supply dry up? I haven't fed her since 12 on the boob today and have only just started leaking a bit now. My boobs are in no way sore or even really feeling full.
Hope these questions make sense thats all I can think of for now.

Hi Bex.
Sorry can't give you any advice about FF but when i weaned Kaelen i just expressed a tiny amount off to make my boobs a bit more comfortable when they got too full/sore and it didn't take them long to go back to normal. He was a lot older though so i don't know if that would make a difference or not. You'd have to watch out for Mastitis too. Cabbage leaves are supposed to be good too for soothing sore full boobs, they probably will get like that at some stage. Or there's stuff you can get from the chemist called Milk Stop.
Good luck, i hope things get easier for you now that Lexies on formula.

Aw Bex...HUGS!!!
Ok, she won't bring up as much wind being bottle fed as they don't tend to suck nearly as much air on the bottle because the teats work differently to a nipple. Well thats my understanding of it.
Go to a local herbal shop if you have one, they may be able to suggest something natural to dry up your supply. Otherwise I think it's just something along the lines of, don't feed or express and invest in some cabbage leaves to get you through the tightness until the milk dries up.

HAve you tried everything Bex in regards to breastfeeding. It sounds like you want to, so can I suggest something like domperadone (sp?)? And what about a boobie consultant? Each worked wonders for us. I am only suggesting this as I was so close to giving up so many times in the first couple of weeks....but we pushed through and I can proudly say we were pretty successful.
If it were me and you were going ahead with FF, when you have full boobs I would just feed her. If it is supply issues, wouldn't you want to make the most of her getting breast milk when it is more readily availible?
Good luck!

Just as an idea Kate, I just tried feeding her from my boobs now and I still had to top her up 70ml! She was a much happier baby after her formula feeds and I am a lot less stressed out already so am just going to goto FF, thanks though.
Deb will check out that milk stop stuff tomorrow Thanks Carin for your input too
If anyone else can shed anymore light on this FF stuff I would much appreciate it

Re winding, never had problems bringing wind up with DD (100% FF). She lets out massive burps about a minute after feeding. If you do have problems, maybe try some infacol or gripe water?
Re supply, i had supply issues too and TBH never experienced any pain or discomfort drying up. Maybe cos there wasn't much to dry up?? Who knows. I was expressing though, so that could have helped. I reduced the expressing overtime too, so didn't just stop dead.
Perhaps try the domperadone if you're wanting to carry on BF'ing. I tried it but did nothing for me. I was lucky to get 20mls off both sides!
At the end of the day we do whats best for our baby's and you know deep down when it's not working.
DD is fed pretty much 3 hourly even on formula. Tried letting her go for 4 hours and she was just starving 2 hours later.

I was pretty much the same Bex. Although i did enjoy bf i just didnt have the amount he needed, one thing i do regret is not having that "last" memorable bf... silly i know.
When FF her, try not to let her guzzle it, DS did have more wind from the bottle, try to stop her and burp her every 30mls or so, and at the end of the bottle dont let her suck the air... lots of wind then!
You may find she will get constipated, will just be her tummy getting used to the formula, brown sugar and warm water works wonders.
And yeah just try and hang her out for the 3 hours, at night DS used to have a bottle, i would keep him awake, hour later give him another bottle... in bed and see you in the morning. That was from 9 weeks, i know i was just lucky though!
Oh another thing when going out i had a thermos with warm water, so i could make a bottle anywhere and didnt have to worry about getting it heated etc...
All the best though...

Hey Bex - as you know we have moved to formula full time - I shouldn't have given up cold turkey but I did and it was incredibly painful! The pain was pretty bad 12-15 hours after the last feed and was awful for 24 hours. It then eased up. I wouldn't recommend going cold turkey though and would keep expressing every few feeds and then reduce further so that your supply slowly diminshes! My MW told me off as I could have got mastitis - thank goodness I didn't!
My MW recommended we feed DS every 3 hours when we were on 'operation fatten up' as she termed it! We are now on 3-4 hours since last Wed and he has only gone to 4 hours a couple of times in that time!

I second the thermos idea. I found it great just for peace of mind knowing I could feed anywhere.
Get a good steriliser and enough bottles.
Try a range of formulas, perhaps those little sachet ones, to see what suits.
We LOVE our avent bottle warmer where you pop in the number of mls and whether it is cold or room temp and it heats to the perfect temp. In saying that, we now mainly just make with hot water/cold water to the right temp.

I sometimes fill a bottle with just boiled water when we got out. Put it in the thermal pocket in our baby bag and by the time 3 hours comes around it's exactly the right temperature. But also take a thermos with us too just in case.
Agree with a bottle warmer, so much easier. We have the Nuk one which is cheaper but I think is more basic than the Avent one.
Microwave steriliser is a blessing too! We got enough bottles to last a whole day and wash them in the dishwasher. You can get tommee tippee dishwasher things that hold the teats and caps, they sell them at countdown. Makes the whole washing thing alot easier.

Hugs hun, it's hard when you want to BF but are not able to. DS has been having formula top ups from day 1, and we switched to FF full time at 7 months. I weaned him gradually, dropping a feed every 4 days.
When he was tiny, he tended to have more wind when he was having a FF, so we used to burp him half way and sometimes put a bit of gripe water in the bottle.
The gold stuff made him constipated, so for us the plain formula worked best.
In terms of warming up bottles, work out what ration of cool and boiling water work - I used to sterilise all our bottles in the morning, then fill them 2/3 with boiling water and when cool stick them in the fridge. When he needed a top up/feed I'd add the remaining 1/3 of boiling water and add the powder. Hope this makes sense! Was also handy when out as cafes ets always can give you boiling water.
Even with FF he was/is fed on demand - up until we started solids it was every 3-4 hours and every couple of months or so he'd feed every 2-2.5 hours for a few days, so we just went with it.
Oh, and if you do want to BF - domperidone is great. I took it for a few months, and although I couldn't BF all the time it still meant that H was BF about 60-70%.
Hope this helps, good luck.

My boy was BF till 4mths, but I didn't think he was getting enough. Gaining weight, but loosing ground against the weight curve IYKWIM.
When we started FF, I had a plan to drop one BF at a time and replace it with a FF. DS had other plans. He went from 10 BF per day, to 0 in under a week. Once he was actually getting full of milk from a bottle, he wasn't having any of that silly BF nonsense. I got engorged breasts just once, expressed and gave it to him at the next feed and that was it. It took me a lot longer to emotionally get over not BFing him.
As far as volume and timing of his bottles go - trust your instinct. Plunket are obsessed with having babies feed every 4 hrs. I started with every 4hrs now we're on every 3hrs - ish. I waste a bit of formula but DS is much happier.
Sometimes he'll finish every last drop, sometimes he just wants a wee top-up. I say better to throw some formula down the drain and have a happy baby. And oh my is he sooooo much happier on formula. I let him stop when he wants, though I will re-offer after a bit if he doesn't drink much.
Also, don't be surprised if your little one tries to do a catch up. DS gained heaps in his first formula month, now he's settled down.

I would also suggest getting a formula dispenser - you can get them from Baby Factory, Baby City, Farmers etc...they have 3 compartments in them and you just measure out the formula for one feed into a compartment - means you have formula for 3 feeds in one go if you're going out, without having to lug around a tin, or the sachets (which are a cow to get into the bottle sometimes!!).
Sometimes it can be a bit of to and fro-ing to find the right formula as well. The girls are on Karicare, just cos it's what they gave them in hospital. And for the amount you give her..let her decide. Don't go off the tin...all babies are different. My girls feed 5 hrs apart - always have done since we left the hospital. If they drink too much, all that happens is it comes back up, a bit like an overflow tap...not even digested.
We also used to wind the girls every 30ml when they were little, then it moved to 3 times a bottle...now it's halfway through and at the end. We did have massive trouble a few times, and gripe water was our best friend.
Good luck, it's not an easy decision, but it's what's best for our bubs in the end

Yep, the formula dispenser is a godsend!!! After one day of trying to hold screaming hungry bubs and put formula from sachet into bottle using my other hand while it went everywhere and everyone in my baby class just looked (coz I was the only mother using formula) I got one and it is great!!!

Yeah, and I'm in with the thermos and dispenser too.
I've got the avent dispenser, but I've seen the tommy tippy and it looks more compact. As for the thermos I carry a bottle/s with 2/3 the amount of water, then add 1/3 boiling water from the thermos as required. (you've got to carry the bottle/s anyway, and then a smaller thermos covers out all day)

For dispensers, I've got two Tommee Tippee (Farmers) and an Infantino (Baby Factory). I love my TT ones...but having 3 comes in very handy when the girls stay overnight (because 3 dispensers = 4 feeds for me).

Hey I've got some S26 step1 formula sachets that expire in May - I'd be happy to send them to you, otherwise they'll just go to waste. Pm me your address if you'd like them.

Both my girls are formula fed. Here's some of what works for us:
- have a covered jug of cooled boiled water in the fridge
- wash, sterilise and fill bottles with boiled water and store in the fridge till ready to mix
- microwave sterilisers are the bomb
- the tomee tippee dispensers are great (up until you need to get 4 scoops in there - then you need two separate ones)
- if you can work out how long it takes to heat the bottle to the right temp in the microwave it's much quicker (especially when they are screaming) than sitting in hot water. *just shake it really well after heating.
Re constipation, my MW and Doctor told us off for using brown sugar and boiled water - it can cause diabetes. Doctors can perscribe 'Coloxyl' and you just add the correct amount to their bottle and shake it in.
And my MW suggested not expressing in decreasing amounts, but to bind your boobs really tight until the milk is gone. Worked here, although I did have a couple of nights of leaking - I recommend a folded up towell under your chest in bed!
Gripe water is good for wind, although we now give Weleda Colic Powder at 3 out of 4 feeds and that is helping heaps (they have some colic issues as well as wind though, and mild reflux). Best thing we purchased were these little medicine dispensers with teats - 'Munchkins' they are called - chemists sell them - works for gripe water too.
Hope it works out for you, and don't beat yourself up over not being able to BF - as others have said - happy Mum = happy baby!

oh my gosh ladies this thread is really helpful - thanks heaps!
my scenario is a little different. i have been BF and it has been going ok, but the fact that i cant actually 'see' how much she is getting really does my head in. it makes me so anxious at every feed that i dont think i can take it anymore!
i feel terrible cause i know that BF is best for her but i have started to alternate her feeds between breast and bottle just for my own peace of mind at least every second feed that she definitely is getting enough. sounds crazy i know but the anxiety is killing me! it makes me feel sick and want to cry almost every day
all the stuff i read tells me that my breastfeeding is going fine but its not enough for me so have decided to switch to FF as this way i know exactly how much she is getting and she seems much more satisfied too.
i worried lots about whether people would think i was a terrible mum because of this decision, and still do a bit but I think I have come to the conclusion that with BF vs. FF :: Peace of Mind = Happy Mum = Happy Baby
