i had never heard of this before...

this is from their site...

Their brief was to provide easily accessible, immediate, short term practical service to assist the mothers of pre-school children when they are temporarily ill, emotionally stressed, in a crisis situation or for other reasons needing help to care for their children.

Yep parent port rocks!!! They're not just for mothers of preschoolers now though, "for assistance to be given, the family must live within the boundaries of the Parent Port group, and have pre-school children or be expecting a baby."

Parent Port are AWESOME. They will come to the house and do all your cleaning and cook for you and watch baby while you catch up on sleep.

I didnt end up needing them but mental health recommended them while I was being assessed so I could get some much needed sleep.

ETA... the wont actually do ALL your cleaning LOL but will vacuum, clean dishes, put washing on etc...

OMG I wish there was something like that in Chch. I could have done with a bit of help every now and then in the last year, seeing as we don't have any relatives here.
That just sounds like an amazing organisation.

What an amazing thing, wish they had something similar in Dunedin. It would have been invaluable.

I used Parent Aid Waitakere and they were fantastic. Did my washing, hung it out then folded and then did my dishes... they were just like a mum which is what i was missing. I looked after the baby and they potted around. They are truely saviours and are so friendly and kind.

Wow, what a great idea. I just sent the link through to a friend not getting any sleep with her newborn and has an 18 month old.

Gosh I though that info was publicized a lot to Auckland mums but evidently not! I have used them twice when I was quite ill. People like Plunket can also refer you to them if you are not coping, eg. have PND

not publicised - i found it out this year only from another site i visit. And i have three kids.

i guess its like a lot of things parent related, you have to actually look for it.

I wonder why they don't publicize it more? I was given the info 3x at least by different places. One was ante natal class. Another was Plunket.

Yeah I knew about it too, I think the shore really promote it more than other areas.... I was given their pamphlet at antenatal, my GP, Mental Health and plunket PLUS they have signs up at the NSH all though I spent so many long hours walking around that place trying to get labour going I think I paid more attention to the walls then most LOL

Would have been good to have know about this with DS1 plunket or g.p never mentioned it nor where there any posters at middlemore or at botany unit.
It should be told to every parent in all areas of Auckland, my midwife never mentioned it. We are in south Auckland.

On a another note i did ask my midwife to be refered to B4baby which is breastfeeding support service that i had with Ds1, but due to funding cuts i wasn't accepted as i wasn't the ethnicity i need to be to be accepted. I was so gutted because i still needed Bf help!. It's only for Maori families, i was told.

Great that parent port is for everyone!

I think each area is run independantly so might be why there is better promotion in some areas than others????

But yup, it should be out and proud, its a fantastic service!
