DP and i will be going down to Christchurch in early march and we are looking for a nice place to stay. wanting somewhere close to places (we arent going to have a car) and that doesnt cost to much

oh and we want a room with a spa bath!

You could try Hotel So.
Its right in the middle of town by the Square and meant to be a cheap hotel.
Not sure about the spa though sorry.

The bus system in chch is really good (well I think it is after living in Auckland for years!) so you wont need a car to get to anything touristy.

We stayed in hotel so when we went down. very strange in a cool way. very very compact. No spa bath in the rooms we stayed in. Def nice and cheap, nice rooms just very small.   We had a hire car but wouldnt bother again. Didnt need it and parking it was more of a hassle.

We stayed in hotelso but if you like your space I would only reccommend staying in a queen or king room. Wasnt terribly expensive but no spabath..
