Topic: TTC and Xmas functions??? Posted: 12 November 2009 at 9:21pm |
or any social function for that matter...
I am just wondering what everyone is doing/telling people during this time? Obviously I don't want to drink eccessively (not that I do normally...but I have never been known for shying away from a bottle of wine..or 2 ) and am just wondering what to say when people notice that I'm not drinking?
its just that time of year too...realised that Hubby and I have some kind of function every weekend til xmas!
any ideas are greatly appreciated

If you are in the TTC stage I'd still have a few, perhaps one or 2 max and be the sober driver and use that as your reason. That way you can still enjoy the night and alcohol before you are actually pregnant without making it too obvious
Even if you are in the 2ww, one or 2 glasses wont do any harm, just dont go on a bender IYKWIM

Hi Sophie, I was wondering the same thing! As we aren't telling anyone we are TTC, I wasn't sure how to get around the whole drinking thing. I know here, if any of my female friends say they are on antibiotics, people make the assumption they are preggers anyway!!
I think I will do the just have a couple drinks some nights and sober drive others. I really want to be able to say on Xmas day "sorry no can't drink I'm preggers" to the family. So FX'd for that...

I'm in the same boat. I'm avoiding alcohol altogether, because I've read some really persuasive research that any amount of alcohol actually affects your chances of conception. I'm sure that's not a problem for most people (lots of people drink and get pregnant... in fact that's why some people get pregnant ) , but mine are so low anyway I'm doing everything I can to increase them.
I'm lucky that I'm usually just a one-or-two glasses type anyway, and at our work functions it's pretty normal for the odd person to not drink for one reason or another, but I'm sure I will be asked. I'm not sure what I'll say yet... hesitant to use the anti-b's line, but might have to resort to it.

There are all sorts of reasons why people don't drink these days, I think its socially acceptable to not drink at Christmas Functions.
I try to avoid it at work Christmas functions so I don't make an idiot of myself.
Another way around it is to order lemon lime and bitters, looks alcoholic but isn't. Also strangely L&P looks alot like sparkling wine.

I'm a bit of a lush. Last year I drank at Christmas functions. When I found out I was pg I had had 2 or 3 glasses at about 7 functions. I felt pretty bad.
So I'd say maybe have one or two if your pre-ovulation or between OV and possible implantation (6 DPO?). After implantation, I'd avoid it. Obviously, alcohol significantly reduces you chances of getting PG. So none is better. After all, if you want to kill someting living (like bugs on a cut, or a doctor doing an operation) alcohol is what you can use to do this!
Appletize in a wine glass is the most convincing fake wine.

I always thought alcohol was a major contributor to getting pregnant. Mostly cause it makes people less inhibited.

What I do, and what i did when I was in early pregnancy last time and don't want to tell people or explain why I am not drinking, is to just order a glass of wine, and sit on it all night. don't drink it, people don't even notice unless you make a thing about telling people you are not drinking.

Lemonade and cranberry juice looks like wine or an RTD in a glass if thats your thing. My cousin use to mix up different coloured raros, add lemonade and drink that coz she was a huge RTD fan and people just assumed she'd poured it into a glass.
Plain coke could be bourbon and coke for all anyone else knows. Does anyone really pay much attention to exactly whats in your glass if you're holding one??...

Most of my work functions are the drinks and nibbles kind, where there's glasses of wine and OJ, and no-one would think twice if you're drinking one not the other, so I'm not too worried about them.
The one I'm worried about is a committee I'm on - we're in the habit of sharing a bottle or so of champagne every year, and it just looks odd to say no, and there's no chance of substituting. I was in the TWW last year and raised eyebrows then by saying 'no thanks'... (gosh, can't believe it's a year since then, if you'd told me then that I'd still be trying now I'd have been a wreck). I guess it's possible I'm on anti-bs two years in a row??
ETA that I know these people very well, we spend a lot of time working together, so trust me, they will suspect something if I don't drink. Oh well, I guess I can just let them suspect.

If you are a beer drinker (which luckily I am, well actually I drink anything) Macs light is great. Only 1% alc and when in a normal beer glass no one is the wiser.

half coke half raspberry looks like beer.
say your Oj has vodka in it (no one will know unless they take a sip)
if you have to have wine and you DP/DH is with you just tip a little bit of yours into his glass every now and then so that the wine in your glass goes down as if your drinking it.
ummm what else did i do the other night
hmmm cant remember my other tricks right now
I'll be back lol

ohh thanks girls! I like the sober driver idea...it's actually never me so maybe its about my turn anyway :-)
also I am a beer drinker so might give macs light a go.
We have lots of very close (very social!) friends who will notice if I am not drinking...but I guess they will just have suspect whatever they like ;-)
Everything will be soooo much easier when we can all say 'sorry cant drink because we are having a baby!!' :-)

sophied- we have told our close friends that we are ttc so they know. we are pretty open about things really. they know i don't drink in the tww as a rule so think it will be easy with them.
not so sure about our end of year work function though
i might have to have a think about that one.

Ask for grape juice instead of wine. No one will know the difference.
As I dont drink (apart from maybe 1 or 2 glasses) a year I don't really get what the big deal is with just saying I'm not drinking tonight

As someone else said, just get a glass of wine at the start of the evening, you can pretend sip it if you want, but holding onto it is enough. Put it down somewhere and if someone asks if you want a drink, wave in the direction of it and say you already have one.
As long as people see you with a glass in your hand at some stage, they won't suspect.
