Topic: Dental care during pregnancy Posted: 06 September 2009 at 6:46pm |
Whats the story about dental work during pregnancy?
Never had to bother with this before but one of my molars just broke in half and I can feel the pain of an exposed nerve.
For the last week I just thought it was a loose filling but obviously it was broken. The only reason it took so long to actually realise it is that I wear a plate as I lost a front tooth a few years ago and the plate was holding the tooth together.

Not sure about the ins and outs of it but when I saw the dentist they didn't want to x-ray (however, it was only for a check up).
The anaesthetic will be local so, I guess, no systemic effects on the baby. Sounds like you will have to get something done - you won't want to wait until next year! I am sure your dentist will have come across it before and it'll be workable
Hope it isn't giving you too much grief!

I had an infected wisdom tooth pulled at 24 weeks when I was pregnant with Sam and was told it's best to do it in your second trimester as during your third trimester it's quite uncomfortable lying in that position for so long on your back.
I had to have an x-ray to figure out what the root of the tooth was doing so they just put one of those lead blanket thingies around me while they did that. It didn't have any effect on Sam.
I ended up having to go to an oral surgeon to have it removed as it was too awkward for the dentist and they looked after me really well, having my BP and pulse checked throughout.
Ugh I feel your pain though, I HATE anything to do with pain in my teeth and being pregnant doesn't help with that either! Good luck!

I had A LOT of dental work (fillings) done while I was pregnant. I also had a tooth removed too. My dentist said it was ok but she said to have it all done in the 1st and 2nd trimesters. Not too sure why not in the 3rd but anyways. Oh except for xrays are obviously a no no.
I do suggest you do it asap though, before you get to the uncomfy stage

Yeah I had stuff done too, no xray but fillings with a local. Was booked in first trimester but had to postpone it because I think I would have barfed if anyone put their hand in my mouth

I have the dentist on tuesday and they said they can still do xrays they just use a lead apron over your stomach so they dont expose the baby
I also had a tooth pulled with bailey and didnt have an xray, I went back after I had bailey as per dentist instructions and THEY PULLED THE WRONG ONE!

I had a broken tooth with my last pregnancy, they just put on that apron thing for the xray, used a local and pulled the bugger out. Had anti-biotics that were safe for baby to get rid of the infection that was around it. My dentist actually said they quite often have to pull out teeth from pregnant woman.

i had to have a permanent filling..which is not recommended but after three attempts with temp stuff (she told me the anesthetic is special preg stuff) i got it done..i had to cause it was otherwise going to get infected..
i would never get an xray during pregnancy..and my dentist won't do them no matter what.. even though you do wear a lead apron she doesn't do them. but that is just me..
looks like i will be going again too:( my teeth get worse during pregnancy:((very common) I was 27 weeks and it was uncomfy and i hated how i had to have three injections every time...lol apparently red heads need more i sure do..but i had to get it done:(

Renee - poor nurse
Tastic - The wrong tooth!! I would due them!
Well I rang the dentist this morning and have an appointment for Wednesday morning, she thinks they might just cap/cover the tooth and not have to pull it out which would be a relief.

I got a couple of permanent fillings at 15 weeks. They did them with the white stuff instead of the grey stuff (technical aren't I?) cos apparently the grey stuff isn't so good during pregnancy but the white stuff is ok. Just a bit more expensive

I would also avoid the xray. I am seeing a dental hygenist and she said they would just do the standard clean/polish and 6 monthly check ups until baby is born then xray my teeth. I hadnt been to the dentist for about 3 years!!

Im a dental assistant (tho im on a break atm )
if necessary the dentist CAN do xrays , with a lead apron, but most prefer not to , as they don't know exactly how much of an effect it has on baby , in saying that tho , I would have been exposed to it a couple of times during pregnancy , and my baby is fine .
Get your tooth seen to as soon as possible, you don't want the tooth to become infected and spread to nearby teeth as well, second trimester will probably be more comfortable , but we did have patients come in at 40 weeks (that was always fun , I would just watch their stomach the whole time , waiting for baby to kick lol )
Renee, that reminds me of a time I was changing the water bottle by the basin and this old asian guy spat into my hair . I went home and had a shower . Im pretty sure you would have been a lot more apologetic than him too

Colee25 - when I was about 20 weeks pregnant last time my gums all began to bleed spontaneously. I went into panic mode and saw the dentist who said that all was fine but advised that I flossed twice a day and that sorted it. I have started flossing already this pregnancy as I so don't want that to happen again.
Dental problems in pregnancy are very common - in the UK you get free dental care in recognition of this fact and to ensure women look after their teeth. In the 'old' days I am pretty sure it was expected that you would lose a tooth every pregnancy!
