Hi,

I am 8 weeks 2 days pregnant. I have just had the tests for gestational diabetes and was all clear. But for the past 4 nights I have been unable to have a decent sleep. I go to bed at 9pm and read (this is my usual routine) which makes me relax and tired. About 9.30pm I am dozing off so turn off the light. I wake about midnight and need to go to the toilet, and my mouth is so dry that I can't get to the sink fast enough for some water. Then back to bed, takes about 30 mins/1 hour to get back to sleep, awake again approx 2-3am, repeat performance, awake again 6am, repeat performance... it's driving me mad. After each visit to the toilet I am also cleaning my teeth/mouth vigorously incl mouthwash now to try to take away the gross feeling I have in my dry mouth. Some nights I eat a mandarin after the glass of water. All I can think of is that I have started drinking pineapple juice, just a glass a day. I have quit coffee, drink orange juice first thing, and if I need a coffee I have decafe, and only one. Water, especially chilled, is like a drug to me - I can't get enough of it, particularly overnight. I am quite concerned, and will be ringing my midwife tomorrow, but what is going on - do I possibly suddenly have gestational diabetes, despite my clearance test from 3 weeks ago???

This is my 3rd attempt at a pregnancy, the first was missed-miscarriage, the 2nd was bi-chemical, both times I had this insatiable thirst. This pregnancy has shown a foetus and a heartbeat so it's a lot better than the last two thankfully, but I am quite worried about this 'complication' - especially as I am really really tired now as well.

Our house gets quite hot at night with the logburner and we have ceased putting logs on the fire about 8pm to cool down the house a bit. I feel I need to sleep with an open window (it's winter!!!) but it's not fair on hubby. Yes, I am feeling very hot in this pregnancy also.

Thanks for your advice if you have any!

Congrats on having a heartbeat.

All I can offer is that in the first trimester for me I was drinking 3-4litres of water a day. Most of that was during the night and would need a good gulp after each toilet stop. Come to think of it, I still get the drys during the night, but not so bad.

Sounds pretty normal to me, I drank like a fish from about 12 weeks until I finished BF ! Unfortunately, all the drinking = multiple visits to the loo so you will be well versed in interrupted sleep by the time bubs arrives!

Not much else I can say - you need to keep your fluids up and drinking water is SOOOOOOOO good when you are that thirsty!!

Glad to know I am not the only one, but if a cure could be discovered I am sure we would both be so much happier!

I am also drinking heaps of water now and for the past couple of days have a dry throat the entire day/night (and this is staight after drinking a glass of water). I am just enjoying being able to drink water atm, as last time I went completely off water (tasted so gross to me) and had to drink fizzy water the entire pregnancy.

I was drinking upwards of 4 litres a day with both pg's....had to be ice cold to the point I would freeze half a bottle of water then add water from the fridge in the morning and then drink it straight away and had to keep adding more water. Couldn't get enough of water...but then I have never been a big tea or coffee drinker.

Congrats Maebee baby, sounds to me like your in for a typical pregnancy........

Me and the tap in the bathroom became close friends in the early stages at night........I couldnt believe also how thirsty I was, its not so bad now but now and then i will get suddenly overwhelmingly thirsty i almost feel like Im going to die if i dont get a drink fast. I have been right into water this time around, was badly into coke last time cos i couldnt stand water. but this time I have loved water and thats very weird for me as i normally have to incourage myself to drink it.

My toilet stops decreased dramatically at 12 weeks and are starting to slowly make their way back now, so im trying to decrease my fluid intake early evening.........which is hard when now all i want to do is skull really cold milk )partly due to some heart burn in the evening). we have had to start buying 3litres now to allow for my need for milk........

Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy

I am so glad to hear this is normal...I was starting to think there is something wrong with me. It doesn't matter how much I drink I stay thirsty and if I have too much water in one go I feel sick. I try and drink as much as I can during the day to drink less at night...but it doesn't seem to have much effect on the dry mouth. I am also a couple of days over 8 weeks.

I found a cure! Just complain on here - I had a really good night sleep last night! LOL!!!

Seriously - it is good to know I am not abnormal. I was soooo worried that I had suddenly developed gestational diabetes despite having a clear test 3 weeks ago. :)

BusyBee - you must be due very early March too then? I am due 2 March :)

I've been finding the same thing and I think it's because I've got a little bit of a stuffy nose and I'm sleeping with my mouth open. It's actually improved heaps in the last couple of weeks since we got HRV so maybe the drier air helps? What if you try putting on a dehumidifer or if your nose is stuffy try something to clear that (not sure what though!).
