Topic: Rash/Itchy Belly Posted: 18 June 2009 at 9:49pm |
Tonight Ive noticed a rash all over my tummy and its really itchy now! Ive called my midwife and she advised me to call healthline or my doctor, so i called healthline and they basicly said(after I asked all their questions about the rash) that I should see my doctor within 24 hours to get it looked it.
Its slightly raised in places and quite itchy in places, its driving me mental now.
Has anyone else had anything like this and was it pregnancy related? My midwife doesnt think it will be pregnancy related as I just saw her today and the rash wasnt there and everything is fine with me and baby. I still feel fine, and baby is wiggling like normal.

Could it be hives from something you've eaten or taken?? I had that happen to me after taking some medication and it was a rash and itchy as all hell!
I'd go see your Dr for something to relieve the itchyness as I dont think you can take antihistiminies (sp?).
I hope it stops soon for you

Ive got hayfever tablets that my midwife OK'd for me...might try one of those and see if that takes the itchy away a bit.
I havent eaten anything different...and It cant be my clothes cos I always use the same washing powder....so Im stumped

How odd!! If your MW said you can take the hayfever tablets I'd give it a go. Something is better than nothing to keep your sanity.

Hi could be hormonal? Maybe try and get an appointment with your doctor tomorrow. I don't think I would try anything on it - and I would avoid hot showers/baths as that could aggravate it more. I developed a burning (where you don't want burning) when I was pregnant come on suddenly and lasted for about 5 weeks I think I just about went insane - even the hospital doctors where puzzled as I had never had anything like this before and it was the hormones all out of whack - something that really helped with the pain was a cold flannel placed on the area. If you are really concerned - do you have an after hours medical centre? Good luck.

Could be hormonal, I really cant think of anything else that could have caused it. Healthline said to just put some aqueous cream on it, so have done that, hasnt helped the itch really, however in the last half hour or so the redness has gone down so it may be clearing up now.
If its still there tomorrow though, I will book in with the doctor. Healthline said because Im feleing fine and baby is fine that tomorrow would be all good to see someone, so no need to go to the afterhours, yay lol cos I so cant be bothered sitting there for ages!
Hannibal, your experience sounds awful I cant imagine how horrible that was for you, putting up with that for 5 weeks!

It could be PUPPPS (pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy).
PUPPPS is completely harmless (but so F*N itchy you may be tempted to chop your hands off). About 1% of pregnant women get PUPPPS and it appears in the last trimester of pregnancy. It usually appears in scar tissue (mine's in my stretch marks and belly piercing) and starts on the abdomen but can spread to thighs and arms etc.
You definitely need to see your doctor - firstly to rule out anything else but secondly because they can prescribe hydrocortisone which definitely helps.
CuriousG found this site for me which has some good info and lots of suggestions for relieving the itch http://www.tcinternet.net/users/kritzerburke/naomi/PUPPP.htm.
The best things I have found for relief from the itch are pinetarsol at every shower (initially I was showering a couple of times a day just to use the pinetarsol), lot's of extra sensitive moisturiser and aqueous cream (the dryer the rash gets the itchier it becomes) and when required hydrocortisone cream (I try not to use it too often because it crosses the placenta but for the first few days I was using it twice per day as recommended by the doc, now I just use as required - about once per week). I also now rinse and spin my clothes twice in case my washing powder is irritating it and never use any soap other than pinetarsol on my abdomen.
The only cure for PUPPPS is having your baby.

Sheena, I had a similar sort of thing towards the end, I'm not sure if you saw it or not, I thought it looked like the PUPPPS that MrsMojo just mentioned.
Cathi saw it and just told me to rinse it in salt water and put on curash powder, it seemed to work and as soon as Ryan was born it went away again (thank goodness!!!)

Thanks girls, it seems to be a lot better this morning, my belly is itchy and dry but the redness is gone so it must have been a hormonal thing or possibly heat rash.
Im using aqueous cream on my belly and thats helping with the itch and dryness. If it comes back I will definitly get the doctor to look at it, cos man it was itchy as hell last night

I had PUPPS too and it drove me INSANE!!!!!!! Didn't help that the best treatment was to deliver the baby and the stubborn baby stayed where he was for an extra few long weeks. Definitely go to your GP if it comes back - they need to rule out chohlecystitus (sp) which affects the liver. Aveeno moisturiser was fab too.

Yeah Ive heard Aveeno is really good, I think I'll grab some of that next pay day! My tummy is just itchy and dry and a bit sore today, but no red rash. Will definitly go to the doctor if it comes back though.

Hi Sheena I had that when I was 26 wks with Emily. It lasted a few days then went away. Because it was in January, and started on my wedding day (YAY) which was the hottest day ever, I think it was a combination of heat rash, the lining of my dress which wasn't breathable, and possibly also a hive-lke reaction to the sparkling grapejuice I drank that day. A cold compress helped (or because we honeymooned at Lake Taupo I spent alot of time sitting in the cold lake), and rubbed Weleda for Baby Calendula Oil into it which helped soothe and relieved the dryness too.
