Sleeping without a dummy

Hi everyone,

I am wanting to get Arianne use to not having a dummy to fall asleep. It may be better getting her use to not having it early rather than later.

Does anyone have any suggestions that have worked well for baby sleeping without a dummy??

You could try letting her have it whilst she gets sleepy and then take it off her before she is totally asleep and slowly wean it that way? Sorry not too much help, my eldest dropped his at 2 months when he found his fingers but Kyle is still loving his dummy, although strangely enough he only has it during the day and is happy to sleep at night without it

Heidi always has it to sleep during the day but at night she has it when she goes to sleep and then its usually out within half an hour and she does not need it again during the night unless she wakes which she has not done for awhile now.

If I try and give it to her when she is upset but not going to sleep it just makes her more upset as i think she associates it with going to sleep???

I would try the cold turkey thing and see how it goes. Does she like sucking her fingers or thumb?

No, sorry we tried everything - cold turkey, taking it off her when she was just asleep etc...

I just waited for Ava to be able to put it back in herself, which she can do now so at night its great she can find her dummy and put herself back to sleep.

I'll deal with weaning fully when she can 'understand' why we are taking it off her (ie, you're a big girl")

For the older kids to get them off the dummy apparently leaving them on the Xmas tree for the elves to take & make into toys works a treat.

Or you could do the easter bunny seeing that's close.

Obviously that won't work for Arianne. I would watch though cause if she gives up the dummy & finds her fingers/thumb instead that will be harder to wean off.

I'd go cold turkey at Arianne's age. You will have a couple of bad nights and then it will get better. We didn't dare take Dom's away, he still has it and we will keep it until he is old enough to understand about the dummy fairy.
