Topic: Stretchmarks: Pls help... Posted: 20 January 2009 at 12:55am |
I am pregnant and want to know if anyone has had any luck with skin care for stopping stretchmarks? I have heard that some are not safe to use and can harm my baby but I am so confused by which ones are ok and actually work to prevent stretchmarks, as I happily grow into my 9 month bump!

Hey-
I have been told that if you are genetically predisposed to them- youll get them- so if your mum had them you prob will. I find this somewhat comforting because it almost takes the full responsibility out of my hands. BUT you can reduce them, and 'help' the situation Like itching and dryness from the stretching, and just feeling generally nice.
There are HEAPS of different products you can use.... I really like Weleda Pregnancy Oil. You can also use Sweet Almond oil which isnt fragranced... both available from health stores.
Some people swear by That Cocoa Butter stretch mark cream from Palmers.... I dont like the smell personally (its not that yummy smell you expect) and its really thick.... And if you want to invest- Rosehip oil is supposed to be magic- but its expensive. So its a personal thing.
Keep the moisture levels up thats the main thing I reakon.
I love rubbing my belly with oil- good bonding time.... makes you feel nice and conects you to your changing body! Nicer when DP does it too... he likes the fact he can help, and be involved in the process. Its easy to forget they are keen too.
Sorry for waffling... thats my 2c

I put on 20kgs while pregnant, and even though I already had stretchmarks on my bum and thighs from puberty, I managed to avoid them with pregnancy. I used Palmers Cocoa butter moisturiser (not the strechmark cream, just the normal one, fragrence free) evry morning before work, and I used bio oil at night. On the natural front, apricot kernel oil was lovely too, I'd use it instead of bio oil sometimes. My daughter's now 6 months old, and my tummy is line free. You have to keep the skin moisturised and supple to it stretchs instead of tears, so morning and night, use lots, and a good long rub.

So far i've avoided them. My mum doesn't have them but my sister got them big time. I've gained 17kgs overall so quite a bit. I was a 12 to start with so was never a tiny person anyway. I've been using the Palmers cream but I got the Concentrated one in the tube. It's really thick but i've found that it also relieves the sting when the skin goes through a tight patch.
And hey, my MW said if you get them, then you've earnt them.

I've managed to avoid them so far (*touch wood*), and I've put on a bit of weight too, probably about 15kg so far.
I use Earth Mama Angel Baby stretch oil, its quite expensive but its wonderful to use. The oil smells divine, and its all natural (compared to say Bio Oil). And you can use it to massage your perineum closer to the day as well (which can help to reduce likelihood of tears).
My belly is the most moisturised part of my body!
I won't be devastated if I get a few stretch marks, but I think this will reduce them if I do get them.

I've used vitamin E capsules, pop them then rubbed them on my tummy and i've not got any so far. Got a few with Carys but I think they did that during the section as I never saw any before I had her.

mum had them reallllllllllllllllllllly bad but i never got any with my first and i wasnt small......i used cocoa cream not only does it smell yumm.........i used it from day dot though.......you cant really stop stretch marks more then making them lighter (if you get my point...sorry very tired) and its also to do with how dry your skin is so i guess if you take really good care with a good moisturiser it would probably do the same thing at half the cost..............i did use bio oil after c section and had one hell of a bad reaction with sever pain.............so something in that im touchie with.

They also reckon that hydration is important for minimising stretch marks, so ensure you drink lots of water!

FYI- Bio Oil is a synthetic oil. (why why why)
There are cheaper more effective and natural options (most of them stated already)

I totally agree. It all comes down to your skin type. And probably also how you carry and how big you get. I brought into bio oil and a couple of cocoa creams and I still have the most horrid stretch marks

Hey! Congrats on your pregnancy, I am 3 months pregnant and have had 8 girlfriends all use this product called belli skin care, Elasticity Belly Oil that helps to prevent stretchmarks. Their doctor told them it was the safest to use, then I saw it on a current affair the other night as well. I read up all about in on their website and it talks heaps about what is safe, really interesting. None of my friends got ANY stretchmarks at all and swear by this for stopping stretch marks. I have only just started using it but so far so good! I ordered all of their other skin care for pregnancy as well from www.belliskincare.com.au and LOVING it. Wish you all the best for the months ahead, we are together in the skin stretch J don’t forget to join the VIP thing on their site before you order, you get a discount that way, i forgot myself but definitely worth it you get 15% off. Good luck.

wow was that an ad?
I am using palmers coco stretch mark cream. It smells a bit weird and I'm probably going to get rosehip oil after the tube has run out. Bio oil smells too strong to me I can't stand it at the moment

I think that if you are predisposed to them then you will get them no matter what you do - but rubbing cream into your tummy will feel really nice
My mum had bad stretchies with her pregnancies so i thought i would get them too. I gained 23kgs, never used any creams and managed to avoid them

Yep you'll get them if you're genes make you, can't do much about it!
I carried really small and still got them (although I couldn't use creams as got a horrid pregnancy rash on my tummy), my cousin was tiny pre-preg (8-10) and carried huge and never got a single one. Such a shame really

I used Palmers and bio oil throughout my last two pregs, didn't get any with the twins but I only got half way with them and I thought I had avoided them with DS but they came out of nowhere in the last couple of weeks - gutted but not much I can do about it now. My mum got them, my sister had her son (10.3) and didn't get them.

Hi guys,
I used Palmers coco moisteriser stuff in the pump bottle which smelt nice & felt nice but didn't do a thing!
My specialist who was the top guy you can get in NZ (Prof of Maternal Fetal Medicine and current Head of Department for Obstetrics... so knows his stuff) said it's all genetics so only use cream to make you feel better - nothing can stop stretch marks. My mum had them, my sister got them only very low (under panty line) & I have them bigtime and I mean bigtime!!!!!! I think you can get them worse though if you decide to have twins (Lisa will agree with me here I'm sure). I gained 1/2 my body weight while pregnant & all/most on the belly.
