Topic: eye discharge Posted: 28 October 2008 at 8:57am |
Catriona has woken up this morning with a sticky green discharge around her left eye. the eye itself doesn't appear red or sore. Does anyone know what this could be?
We are going to the doctors on Thurs for the 6-week check up - should i take her today to get the eye checked out before hand?

Dunno what it is, but JJ got it a couple of times - I just squirted a little breast milk in it and it cleared up almost immediately, so maybe give that a try before heading to the doc

You could also try cleaning it with a little saline....make your own with 1/2 tsp salt in a cup of boiling water, let it cool then you can use it for up to 24 hours (keep it in a covered container), or you can buy some from the chemist. Make sure you wipe from the inside of the eye (by the nose) out, and then get a clean piece of cotton wool before wiping again. Zach has had a sticky eye for about 3 weeks now, we just keep it clean, it'll sort itself out eventually.
Hope this helps

Ditto on the breast milk.. it will clear things right up. I had to do this for Kayla just last week for the same reason and it works a treat!

Have tried the salty water and it is working so far (no further yukky stuff coming out of the eye yet anyway!)
Typically, my breasts have decided not to leak for the first time since i started and i do not want to stick my finger in the bottle i expressed off this morning (use that for her extra supplement in the evening). I will attempt to try the breast milk tomorrow if my nipples cooperate!

Sounds like conjunctivitis. My boys have had it continuously off and on for the last couple of months. Its caused by blocked and immature tearducts and eventually they get small infections in them. Nothing to worry about. Breast milk works a treat to get rid of it - if not try the saline (salty water). The immature tearducts will eventually clear out and drain properly with time - your little one will grow out of it (it is a really common thing with babies)
One extra point - it is extremely contagious - dont use the same cloth on the other eye or touch the infected gummy eye and then rub your face/eyes etc - you will spread the infection even to yourself. Again it doesnt cause any harm - its just a pain to have to try to get rid of it.
If that doesnt work, a doctor can prescribe you some eye drops which will clear it up very quickly.
