Topic: Right breast agony Posted: 22 August 2008 at 7:16pm |
Hi,
I am completly bf my little boy. Today my right breast is incredibly painful as if it is bruised. I cant even lift it as it hurts so much. It also feels full like it does after Morgan goes throughout the night but he has been feeding from it as normal (even though im in agony whilst he is feeding). Any suggestions as I have never had a problem with the bf? What should I do?

Eeeepp it sounds exactly like me when I had mastitis. Does it look red in places and does it feel hot?
Also are you feeling fluey at all?
Mine was sore for a day or so then I woke up at 4am shaking like crazy and in the morning felt like I had the flu, went to the doctor and it was mastitis.

Get in a hot shower and try hand expressing especially around hot, red or lumpy areas. I have had mastitis and by massaging the area alot it went away and didn't give me any trouble again.

Does sound like mastitis. I have had it 3 times (only once I had antibiotics).
Even though it is sore you still need to get baby to feed from that side otherwise it will get worse.
Have you had it all day? If it is not improving within 24hrs (tomorrow) you should go to a doctor. You definately don't want it getting worse.
All the best

I get this occasionally but have never had full-blown mastitis.
I found the hot shower/massaging/hand expressing while in the shower helped, as well as massaging any sore spots or lumpy spots while bubs is feeding, with a flat palm in a circular motion, towards your nipple, if that makes sense. Try different feeding positions at each feed (two or three different ones) to make sure he's stimulating different parts of your breast.
Just found my awesome breast feeding book and these are some suggestions from it - I haven't tried all of them myself but you could give them a go, I love this book. :
- Put warm water on the infected area before each breastfeed to aid let-down and relieve pain. Warm washcloths, a warm shower or bath, or soaking the breasts in a pan of warm water works well.
- Continue to breastfeed frequently on both breasts. The infection will not harm your baby. Feed every 1-3 hours during the day and every 2-3 hours at night.
- Start each feeding on the uninfected breast until the let-down reflex occurs, then switch to the infected breast. Breastfeed only until the breast is soft. If neccessary, hand express or pump to soften the breast and releive fullness.
- You can apply cold packs after each breastfeed to relieve pain and reduce swelling. Bags of frozen peas wrapped in a cold washcloth work well.
- Drink enough fluid to satisfy your thirst. Water and unsweetened fruit juices are best.
- Get plenty of rest. Keep baby close.
Definitely go see your doctor if it isn't improving soon.

I didn't get bad enough for antibiotics but I found that feeding off the same side a few times and expressing in between seemed to help.
ouch! Glad you got it sorted.
