How early before TTC did you start taking folate or a pregnancy supplement like Elevit?

We made a relatively late decision to TTC this month so I'll only get about three weeks of Elevit in before I ovulate. I hope this is ok.

I know loads of babies are born healthy with no folate at all (accidental pregnancies etc - Alex was a 'surprise' after all and he turned out ok) but after my mc earlier this year I'm a bit paranoid.

I started taking folic acid 2 weeks before I ovulated and conceived in January. Then when I miscarried I just kept taking it, so I'd been taking it for 5 months already when I got pregnant this time. You should be fine taking it just 3 weeks before ovulating though, like you say a lot of people don't start taking anything till they find out they're pregnant already!

BTW I had some information from a health professional recently that said Elevit had too much iron in it which wasn't ideal for a foetus.
I have changed to Solgar Prenatal Nutrients on her recommendation now.
When I looked up the RDI for iron it says about 16mg and Elevit has 60mg!
Just thought I'd share. Plus Elevit is so expensive so any reason to take something cheaper is good!

You don't really need to spend loads of $ on elevit. All you need is a script from your doc for folic acid ($3) and lots of docs are fine if you just ring and ask for it.

As long as you have a good diet you don't need all the other crap in elevit and if you raelly do want to take a multivitamin there are other pregnancy multi v's that are cheaper, lots cheaper!

I have a box of Elevit left over from when I was pregnant with Alex so I had wanted to use that up before buying something else. But maybe I should if the iron is too much?

But on the other hand I had to take iron supplements last time because my levels were low...

I personally wouldnt worry about those small ammounts of iron- even 60mg is nothing,...like u said tonnes of people end up taking iron tablets during pregnancy and they have 200mg each.
