Hi all,

When I had my daughter nearly two years ago now I experienced very severe cracking and bleeding when breastfeeding. I had to stop BF for a while until my nipples healed and then afterwards we were ok.

I'm now due to have number 2 in 2 months and as well as experiencing sensitive nipples throughout my entire pregnancy (as I did with the first) I am noticing that they are starting to crack again where they did with my first. I've been applying Lanolin in the hope they will toughen up - any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi jaqui, I had terribly cracked nipples first time round and have a huge scar on one nipple to show for it!! Unfortunately same thing has happened second time round, cracked and bleeding again and low and behold another scar!! The things we do for our kids aye!!

Sorry to not be able to offer any advice other than just keep getting your latch checked by the hospital staff and your midwife until you are happy.

Everyone kept telling me it was a good latch but I knew deep down something wasn't right but no one seemed to be able to understand what I meant until I went to the plunket family centre. Eleven weeks on I am still not convinced we have it right yet!! So keep asking and asking until someone helps you!!

Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well! All the best

Hey there,
I had really bad cracked and blistered nipples with Jack too so was terrified all the way thru my pregnancy with Caprece. I can happily say I didn't get cracked nipples with her cos I knew how it was suppose to feel and how to latch her right. Maybe book in to see a lactation consultant now so you have all your bases covered

Mine were worse second time round, but that was to do with the gremlins being poor latchers more than anything else.
I think generally it's not as bad second time round as you have a bit of experience with latching, but I do remember when they first put Sienna on my breast in the delivery unit thinking "OMFG that hurts!"

Lanisoh is your friend.

Also, you can't really "toughen' them up, they will toughen up with feeding. Lanisoh is fab, use it before and after every feed its safe for baby, and let your nips air dry if you can.

And its not as bad second time around, still hurts, but not as bad!!

With my last Bubba my MW said to start using WHEAT GERM OIL a couple of months before bubs is due to do this. Just kinda massage it in!! You can also continue to do this after the bitrh since its a natural product.

You should be able to buy it from most chemist's or health food shops.

* Also a wee tip from my Nana was to make a compress thingee from cold/chilled carrots for sore nipples!
Just grate the carrot, squish it all into a pattie kinda shape & pop it on!! (Under a breast pad is helpful for keeping it there)
