Topic: Poor sick bubba... Posted: 06 February 2008 at 1:18pm |
Bella started daycare this week and has (already) picked up her first cold ...She has a constant running nose, wheezing a little and coughing/sneezing. She was up most of the night last night with it. My biggest concern is her temperature...I took it under her arm (as I don't have an ear thermometer) and its 38.3; she is VERY hot and VERY flushed. Being a public holiday, I can't really take her to the doctors...Do you think she will be alright til tomorrow? I have tried pamol but she keeps spitting it out (have tried mixing it with her food too, but she's off her food). She's drinking her bottles but won't take water. Are there any tips to try and alleviate some of her symptoms? And any other method I could try to get her to take the pamol?
TIA from a stressed Mum!!

Spencer had his first cold last week and it was horrible. He also got a temp and I struggled to get pamol into him, it only lasted one night and was back down the next morning. I just got mean with pamol and force fed him while he screamed (mummy knows best!!!) I also got some saline stuff to squit up his nose which helped him sleep better and baby vicks (highly recommend, better than karvol). It took about 3 days for his appetite to come back and he is still a bit snotty and coughy now.
If you are really worried then you can always go to the 24 hour clinic on the corner of bealey ave and colombo street, or one of the local surgeries might be open (in Kaiapoi the docs take it in turns to be there at weekends to run an open clinic)

Pop some vaseline on her chest, then something like Vics. Will help with a stuffy nose..
Hugs.... colds really suck!

Oh poor lil Bella getting sick so soon! Not a good start to daycare huh. Hopefully the fever will only last 24 hrs. I find that's the case when my older 2 have had fevers in the past. Also if she's not taking much of her pamol, try a cold flannel over her head. When Jett had a fever over the weekend I put him in a cool bath, although after ringing healthline they did say they don't "do that" anymore . I don't see why not?
Hope she's better real soon!! Lucky for you having today off to be with her.

Oh no good, pamol in a bottle is an easy way to get it into them. I still lukewarm bathe my boys when they are hot, works a treat here.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

We have the Vicks baby balsam - just rub on her chest and helps with stuffy nose etc
Pamol is tricky for us too - sometimes she'll take with formula (if really hungry/thirsty) but not always. We mostly give it to Gina with a syringe and figure even if she spits some out, she's still taking in some.
Hope Bella feels better soon

Agh, she's got worse, but I rang Healthline to make sure we were doing all the right things, and theres not much more we can do...she's been crying for a few hours now, poor wee thing, just tired and miserable I think . Her temp was 38.8 but Healthline said she only needs to go to A&E if over 40. I think we're in for another long night (and I have work tomorrow!)

I had heard an old wives tale about how to reduce a fever but I can't find where I wrote it down. You soak flannels and wrap them around the calves and ankles but I can't quite remember what you soak it in, lemon? Onion juice? I might be thinking the onion because if you place half and onion under the cot it is supposed to help with coughs.
A bit strange I know but if the pamol isn't working.....
Maybe someone else knows what you soak the flannels in and can correct me??
I hope Bella gets better and you all get a good night's sleep

I hope Bella is feeling better soon, and that you both get through the night ok. Poor little thing, its nasty when they are so sick and there is nothing you can do for them. Big hugs

Huge to you!! It's not nice having a sick bub.
My suggestion, lots of huggs, plenty of fluids and if you are really worried get to the hospital. Don't take any chances with your wee one, you wouldn't if it was you!!
I hope everything is better soon!!

Thanks guys...yes she is better. I was at work today (which was kind of nice, because I was getting all upset at her snuffling etc.) and DH looked after her. He took her to the doc and temp is down, but she does have inflamed ears and a small dose of gastro. We didn't get much sleep last night, but she is in bed now and seems fairly settled so I'm crossing everything that we have a better night (please, please, please!)
