 Topic: Follow on Formula

So whilst actually paying attention to the formula tin, I noticed that babies can go onto the next stage at 6 months. What happens if I dont put him on the follow on and whats the benefits of doing it at 6 months. (personally I say bring it on as it's always on special at the supermarket and is cheaper than the newborn stuff.)

When I weaned the gremlins from allergy formula onto standard at 10 mths I weaned them onto the From Birth stuff as the dietician said it has the simplest protein composition. The Follow On has added iron and some have added Omega 3 etc. in them as well.

The follow on formulas have more iron etc in it which they need from 6 mths.
My plunket nurse (ex starshipe nurse) said to avoid the formula with Omegas in it (Gold etc) as alot of babies have had tummy upsets as it is harder to digest. Karicare is what they use at Starship.

I was wondering about this today, Caden is 6 months on the 23rd december and I was wondeirng if i need to change him to the 6 months+ stuff then.
He is on S26 as the karicare didnt agree with him at all.

Follow on formula is also more filling than the newborn-6 months formula, which means they will (in theory) have an easier time with dropping their milk feeds once established on solids.
Sheena - the only difference I noticed with the S-26 follow-on was its a bit more frothy, no problems with the composition or anything so hopefully Caden will be the same.
It's not necessary to switch them straight away, just when you're ready. And it is recommended that when switching that you mix and gradually switch just in case there are side effects, but I just switched Jack straight over and he was fine.

Yeah thats what I was saying to DF, that when we do switch him we will need to do like 2 scoops of the newborn and then 2 scoops of the new stuff to make up him 240mls.
Caden is well into his solids now, LOVES them, so when he goes onto the follow on stuff will he have a lesser amount of milk? Cos he has 240mls every 3 or so hours and 3 solids a day(just fruits and a vege one at night sometimes).

So you do like you do with a cat then... bit of this brand, bit of the other :P
Thomas is on the normal old karicare and we've had no problems.

Jackson slept through the night as soon as I started him on the 6mnth + s26  We had absolutely no problems with it, no wind or tummy upsets. I didnt mix it with his old formula either, he just went straight onto it. I think the scoops are a bit bigger and im pretty sure (although i may be just blonde!) so it doesnt last as long as the others.

They do start dropping feeds once established on solids and when they go on follow on. Jack dropped from 4-5 feeds at 6 months to 3-4 at 8 months, 2-3 at 9 months, and no usually 1 feed a day.
