    Posted: 20 August 2010 at 3:39pm
My 3 month old DS can only handle being on the floor for so long before it seems he'd rather be sitting up - is that normal? I try to get in tummy time and a kick around on his back as much as possible, but after a while (a few mins on his tummy and maybe 10 mins on his back) he starts crying.....

Just paranoid that I'm not giving him enough floor time - argh!

yip completely normal. Tom has days like that where he would rather be upright or sitting and other days where he is perfectly happy kicking on the ground.

If you want him to spend more time on the floor maybe try giving him a variety of things to look at- bubbles is great for when they are lying on their tummies and Tom has just discovered balloons- I often tie one to his activity gym and he spends ages batting it (and sucking it) around.

you could lay out some books with the pages open..

sing songs...

just lay down beside him and snuggle.. having you closeby is always nice..

just keep offering it..

Just keep offering it they will let you know when they've had enough and the time will get longer.

I used to go through a routine of putting DD on her back then on her tummy(it may have been the other way round I can't remember) then sit her up with me and that would last for an hour or so all together before she was ready to sleep again.

You could try putting a rolled up towel/blanket under his chest to raise it up of the ground when on his tummy

DS hardly had any floor time and definately very little tummy time. Everytime I put him on his tummy he'd scream blue murder, but, he was more than happy to lay on his tummy on my chest so I just did that instead.

Don't stress about it, he'll get there when he's ready and wants to.

Sounds fine because sitting up involves neck muscles like floor time anyway. Are you getting enough time for yourself, would be my only concern. If cuddling him that often doesn't bother you, no prob! But otherwise you could try him in a bouncinette/rocker or something that has him on an angle so he can look around better.

We did 'tummy on mummy time' for ages - he hated being on the floor.   Like MamaT said - he'll get there when he's ready

Mine hated it with a passion too, soon as his tum hit the ground he screamed. Seems to be a common thing with reflux babies though.

Tummy time on me was good though & he loved it.

Cool, thanks for the reassurance guys!

Also - when I do put him on his tummy, sometimes he rolls over (or kinda tips himself over) onto his back and he's been doing this since he was about 4 weeks.

But this isn't "rolling" is it??

Lily hated it too and at the end of the day if they hate it, they hate it so don't force it. I found as she got older she preferred it! So I wouldn't worry about it at all!

Also that's rolling over! Exactly what Lily does! She tips her head as far as she can until she 'rolls' hehe

Also tummy time on mummy is great! And if you get down with him he'll enjoy it even more because he would rather look at you than the carpet.

Yup, I count that as rolling. I was just saying to my Mum tonight that when DS rolls it is like an accidental thing, its usually if he's reaching out for something and he kind of just tips. I don't think he has ever deliberatly rolled yet.

Even now it's amazing if DS will stay on his tummy for more than 5 minutes. He just gets so frustrated with being unable to move yet, and probably quite bored of staring at the carpet too.

Tummy time for my boy isn't offered very often - 3 or 4 times a week. He's perfectly happy to sit and play with his toys for 10 - 25 minutes, so I don't push it. Sitting is exercise too

Isla has always hated tummy time. It's only really in the last month that she has started being OK with it for more than 2mins at a time. I never used to put her on her tummy all that much (just cause she hated it so much) Maybe only 3-4 times a week. She used to lay on her back heaps tho but now she is older she hates lying on her back so she just gets sat up with a tripillow behind her so she can play with toys that way.
