I am starting to worry about how to get things done in the evening when baby arrives and I feel that if I have a plan to work towards then it will give me some semblence of control. The plan may need to be tweeked but we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

So what do you think of this plan? It is really just an extension of our current evening routine

5pm               I bath Jack
5.30pm          Cook dinner
6pm-ish        DH arrives home
6.15pm-ish   We all have tea
6.30pm-ish    DH reads to Jack and puts him to bed while I feed baby
7pm-ish          DH baths baby, another feed and then baby to bed for the night

It would mean a relatively late bedtime for baby (7.30/8pm) but this way DH will actually get to see both of the kids. Unfortunately at this stage DH can't get home earlier so this is the only way I can think to do things.

What do other people do? Do you think this will work (provided baby decides to co-operate)?

Hi,

Sorry I can't give advice on having 2 but 7.30-8pm is pretty reasonable for a baby to go to bed. My girl goes to bed around 7 every night and she is 4 months. For about 2 months it was a struggle to get her to go to bed earlier than about 10pm

I wouldnt worry too much about routine to start with as toddlers seem to stop any form of routine for babies

In saying that I did start trying to slot James into the evening routine early on and when he did go down around 7 or 7.30 it was ok.

Basically our routine was/is

5.30 dinner....sometimes James would have a wee nap then.
6.00 bath...both boys. Initially Tom in bath, James in baby bath....this really only worked well when DH was home and often it was as soon as he walked in the door. I could bath them both but I had to make sure I had something comfy for James to rest on while I got Tom out of the bath and teeth brushed etc) I now only bath James every second night as his skin was getting too dry.
6.30....stories for Tom while I fed James
7pm Tom to bed and James goes when he has finished his feed....anwhere from 6.30 to 7.30 usually.

and yeah, I often found James would wake up about 8.30 for another feed so I was really flexible about his bed time and tried to work on his tired cues more than anything. However any wake ups after 7pm were treated like night time feeds.

Yeah it looks pretty good to me. My DH works shifts so for a while Kyle was going to bed around 7.30-8pm as I have to do the routine on my own a lot. As he's got older the night routine has got easier, as a 5 month old is a little bit more flexible than a newborn (i.e he can be distracted for 10 mins if need be and I bath them together now) and they are now both in bed between 6.30-7pm. For the first couple of months I had no night routine for Kyle and was just completely on demand with him, normally he would doze in the lounge with me/us in the evenings, then I would feed him anytime between 9-11pm then we would both go to bed.

Thanks for the feedback ladies.
I know a routine won't always work with a newborn but I felt so out of my depth with Jack that I thought if I had a plan to work towards then I might feel a little more in control.

Trust me number 2 is so much easier than number 1. With Spencer the first 6 weeks were total hell (no offence to my darling little boy) but with Kyle it was pretty much plain sailing, even though I think we had mostly the same things crop up, just this time around I knew it would all be ok and I knew things were normal phases/stages that would pass, plus I didn't freak out over every little noise etc that they make.

Apart from waking me up all the time Kyle is so much easier than Spencer. Babies are very easy in comparison to demanding toddlers.
