Hiya

I had an emergency c-section with my first baby - essentially down to failure to progress after reaching 6cm with syntocin and not getting any further - and am now 32 weeks pregnant with my second.

So I'm heading towards the 36 week obstetrician appointment where we make the call about trying VBAC or booking an elective. My midwife (same one as last time) is fantastic and very honest, she rates my chances of another c-section at 75-85%... should I just take the odds and book in?
I'm not hung up on "needing" or "wanting" a natural birth because at the end of the day the result is the same, you have a baby. I think the bit that's holding me back is the conscious decision of "yes I will have this surgery", whereas last time as labour went on, it wasn't our decision to make.

I guess I'm asking what swayed you in either direction and how was the elective process different for you than an emergency c?

Thanks in advance

AliceM - We had an emergency c-section as well and although we haven't had (and aren't even pregnant) our second we will be going for an elective c-section. For me the decision came down to a couple of things, the process last time was not something I enjoyed at all (the emergency part was probably the best bit!) and also I want more control over the situation. Last time things got a bit to scary with our little one ending up in NICU for sometime after the birth, this time (or when it happens) I want the chances of 'things going wrong' to be limited.

Good luck with your decision and your birth!!

Hiya... We were the same situation as Aroha11 and for that reason, when we come to no.2 I'll be going straight to a C-Sect. We were in NICU for a week afterwards with a whole lot of things going wrong because he stopped breathing and swallowed gunk when I was in labour and he got stuck. I ended up sick too from 48 hours of labour and things going wrong on my side. I would suspect our OB would rule out a natural birth based on our risk anyway after our birth. That aside it is too traumatising for me and hubby to go through that again, and I was also so heartbroken that I went through all that surgery and wasn't wheeled back to my room with my little man in my arms like all the other ladies... I also want the control, and to have that moment of holding my little bubba without worrying what might be wrong with him because of a labour gone wrong. It'll also be our last if we're lucky enough to get a second one, so I'll be getting my tubes tied - and it can all be done at once... It never worried me if I had a natural birth or not, and still doesn't - I just wanted him here safely - and my midwife ignored everything when he showed on scans transverse and assumed on our behalf when I went into labour that he'd turned (a head and shoulder should feel quite different - she couldn't tell)....so arriving safely was taken out of our hands too   Good Luck

I'm planning a VBAC this time as there's really no reason for me not to. There wasn't any issue with me not progressing (though I guess things were not fast enough for baby, though reasonable as progress goes) as our issue for emergency CS last time was fetal distress based. I think if we'd had getting stuck problems or something like that I would have opted for an elective this time.

I am booking in for an elective at some point past my due date though.

Hi AliceM!! Not sure if you remember me but I was an October 2010 mum too :)

My DD2 was born by elective c-section 4 weeks ago. I had a natural birth last time so no experience with an emergency one but my elective was lovely (as far as they can be!)

was very calm and easy, easy to organise grandparents to look after DD1, had lots of help after the birth so have healed very well. All in all it was a much better experience than my natural birth!

I had to have an elective because I have very big babies and it was definitely the right choice for me :-)

Hey Sophie! I remember you (and definitely remember how big your first bubba was!!). Congrats on the arrival of your new wee - or not so wee - dot. Has it been a huge reality shock dealing with a newborn again?

Thanks for your thoughts people. I watched One Born Every Minute last night and one of the midwives' commented about some women feel like "the magic" is being taken away if they have an elective. That hit the nail on the head for how I've been feeling about it all though I hadn't quite realised that's what it was.

AliceM - I can see where you are coming from with 'the magic' although I think the magic for me second time around will be the calm of it all. If you go with the a VBAC maybe talk to your midwife about the options of changing your mind up to and even during the labor, might be nice to still have options open to you till they are no longer available if you know what I mean... BTW that programme scares me!

I had an emergency c/s with my first due to several things (DD never engaged, get distressed and then i got a fever). The choice to VBAC was a very easy one for me, i wanted a large family and with my DD only being 13mths old when DD2 was born i wanted to be able to still look after her and be home straight away. My VBAC was fantastic and DD2 was over 1lb bigger then DD1. So far i have had 5 VBACs, 2 of them being at home. It is a hard choice but we are very lucky in Nz that we even have the choice to VBAC.
DD 9 ~ DD 8 ~ DS 7 ~ DS 5 ~ DS 2 ~ DS 14mths ~ DD 3mths

I've been thinking about an elective this time around as well. For me, I had a failed induction due to high blood pressure and GD. So for me, if the choice is between induction and elective c-sec - I'll choose the c-section. They tried for 3 days to induce me, finally gave me a c-section on the 4th day. It was emotionally terrible. So I will not be going through that again.

That said, if I don't have high BP or GD this time around? Then the choice is a lot harder.

Hey Alice :-)

hehe yep not sure how but it seems I am a very efficient baby growing machine, Elise was 10lb 11oz at 38+5 so only a few hundred grams smaller than Paige!

lol its been a huge shock to the system with a newborn again... I had somehow forgotten so many things , like how often and how long you need to feed them for, how many nappies you need to change, how often they wake up when you dont want them too! but she is just over a month old now and we are definitely getting into the swing of things :-)

Super excited for you having another one!! do you know what you are having this time? I understand the 'magic' bit being missing with a c-section, it's all a bit planned and misses that element of surprise and anticipation for sure. And the recovery (especially with a toddler) is a bit tricky but as long as you can get lots of help for a good few weeks after it's manageable.

My baby was born via elective c-section due to being breech, so although I have no experience of 'natural' birth (or labour) I just thought I'd let you know that the whole elective process was really great. It was calm and as peaceful as something like that can be, hubby did skin to skin whilst they stitched me up then she came straight to me to be breastfeed as soon as we were in recovery. I healed very well. Although I would try for a vbac next time, if I was in the situation of needing an elective next time, I wouldn't be disappointed. It was still pretty darn special and magical meeting your baby for the first time, no matter how they arrive. Good luck in your decision making

Latest midwife appointment this morning and this baby is still breech.... making an elective looking more and more like the way to go! Someone is clearly trying to tell me something!

There are definite positives to booking an elective, such as flying my mum here in time to look after the big brother and knowing that DH will be here instead of over on the Coast for work when it all starts to happen (though judging by the experience last time, he could be at the top of the North Island and still get back before the baby makes an appearance ;-) )

My head is still playing catch up a bit though I'm feeling less conflicted than a couple of weeks ago. Watch this space...

Hi,
I had an emergency csec with my first and an elective with my second. My Ob was happy for me to try a natural delivery but thought that I'd end up with another csec so I just opted to go straight for the csec. If I have a 3rd baby, I'll definitely be having an elective. It was so jolly easy. Firstly, I wasn't exhausted like I was with my emergency csec from hours of labour. I was able to plan child care and have everything organised. I was at Auckland Hosp and the elective csec department is fantastic. They have their own wee area which is very comfortable and away from the rest of the hosp and delivery suites. I recovered exceptionally quick and was out of bed with ease the following day and no pain relief. I guess I knew what to expect and just got on with it. At the end of the day, I just wanted a healthy baby delivered so I didn't care weather I had a natural birth or csec.

I had an emergency c with DS (failure to progress), and an elective if DD took too long. DS was 2 weeks overdue and DD was due on xmas day and expected to be huge (and I'm tiny!). There is a huge family history of csections in my sisters and mum and grandmother. I didn't want to have a emergency csection over xmas, so I booked the last csection before xmas and crossed my fingers DD would come out of her own accord.

In the end she didn't and I had an elective C. I have to say the experience was soo much nicer than the emergency one and I was home in time for DS excitement of seeing santas gift. No real regrets, tho I would have liked to have a labour though as I never really went into proper labour with DS.

I had a traumatic VB with my 1st then followed by 2 electives and they've been great.

With the right MW and support at home embrace the happiness & calmness & joy of a theatre delivery.

We are so lucky to live in this modern world with safe access to safer c/s deliveries.

So the verdict is in and an elective c it is. I feel really happy with the decision - particularly following this week's midwife appointment where junior is still breech, posterior and just lurking, not anywhere near interested in trying to get engaged. Feel much better having made this decision rather than pinning all hope on a VBAC only to get thwarted at the last minute.

It's definitely a funny feeling though knowing there's a set day where we will meet this little one. Though by the look of my tummy and all the double-takes I've been getting, perhaps little might be not the word!

Thanks for all the comments and advice. D Day is next Friday, still sounds so far away!
