A ceramic heater is ment to be less costly to run. Otherwise you could try using a dehumidifier, it will take the moisture out of the air and the house will be warmer.
Otherwise you could always try and find a portable heat pump. You don't need a technician to instal it and it can be moved from house to house. Harvey Normans use to stock them, not to sure if they still do though, but worth a try!

Julz, we looked at the Nobo heater last year, but for the size of the room, it was a quite a large heater (I looked at their website to see the size of heater required). Looked nice and apparently economical to run, but it was over $600 at Smiths City. So the cost put us off.
We've an oil column in our room,(we borrowed it from DS's room due to newborn arriving early), and last week we bought a Dimplex eco heater for DS room ($159 @ Mitre 10 Mega). Our power bill has gone up in the last week or two (monitor it as with Powershop), but then it's definately gotten colder here in Chch recently. Plus we're still boiling water on the stove everyday.

I'm looking for something for this winter too - had been thinking of the econoheat panels, but sounds like they wouldn't be up to Ohakune's cold winters.
Would the Dimplex eco heaters be good for cold climates, and safe for a toddler's room? We have a wood fire for the lounge, but the bedroom end of the house will still get cold.

When I looked into econoheat panels i was told that they take the chill off the room rather then heat it

Whitewave, the Dimplex Eco costs about the same as a oil column heater to run, it just heats up faster, but it also cools quicker too. They have timer too.
We have it in our son's room and he's the same age as your little boy. DS doesn't touch heaters as he knows they're Hot!

I think the econo heaters are great for bedrooms, which you don't want too hot anyway.
White wave what about putting in a heat transfer (you can get from mega and get someone handy to install it, dh did ours). They are great when you have a fire because the room with the fire tends to get so hot and this way you take some of the heat down to the bedrooms

Sarah, we're in a rental so can't put in a heat transfer system, unfortunately. Otherwise I'd definitely do that!
Just been looking at the Dimplex panel heaters, I'm guessing they'd be more expensive to run than Econoheat panels, but should put out more heat?

We have a dimplex heater in woodville. It's quite a big one, but we've been using sometimes when it gets cold suddenly in the night and we've not got the fire going or something. It puts out a lot of heat, and can warm DD's huge room very nicely but it also eats electricity!
