Too much Food
My boys were prem & had quite a few feeding issues to start off with. Once I had to go to bottle for Jacob things improved, now they love their 'food' & drink like there's no tomorrow.

Eli (aka Fatty Eli) is only 6kg (only 57cm) & Jacob 5.3kg (55cm) but both have 4 x 270mls formula feeds a day plus J a 160ml dream feed. I havn't been concerned because I thought anything to 'fatten' them up & grow but every person I talk to is amazed at how much the consume! Tried to lessen J's intake & he seems to cope with 220mls now, but E makes a horrible fuss if he doesn't get his 270mls. Anyone else in the same boat... wonder if I am creating 'fat' babies?

nb. DH is very slim & I'm short & normal weight so they're not likely to be fatty kids going by genes. Also they're not awake much so don't know how they work it off. Wonder if it's due to their earlier feeding issues why they're such pigglets?

Too much Sleep
Now, don't get me wrong I am not complaining but just want to know if anyone else has such good sleepers because again no-one I've met has babies who sleep so much... and it's not like I can keep them up for longer because they give all the tired signs & when I put them down they sleep fine. Also, when they are awake they are great happy jiggly energetic bubs.

Day routine:
Up from 7.30-8.30am, then sleep
Up from 11.30 - 12.30 then sleep
Up from 3.30-4.30pm then sleep
Up from 7.30-8.45pm then sleep

Night Routine:
E sleeps from 8.45pm - 7.30/8am (sometimes have to wake him up!)
J has a dream feed at 10/11pm then he's up at 6am for dummy then asleep until 7.30/8am & again sometimes I have to wake him up.

Just so odd, they definately seem to be the minority - any thoughts or anyone in the same boat?? And yes I'm very lucky I know - I hopefully havn't jinkxed their behaivour by writing this.

I'm pretty sure at this age you can feed them as much as they like. Don't worry about making fat babies some babies are just fat, feed them if they want it. If they were breastfed you wouldn't know how much they were getting anyway.

They probably sleep so well because they eat so well. They sleep well so then they have the energy for a good play and feed and then so they sleep well its a cycle and sounds like you have got them in a pretty good one. Don't worry what other peoples babies are doing as long as your two are happy when awake and are putting on weight theres nothing wrong with them.

Well done Mum

Thnaks, I'm usually not one to compare because they are pretty good boys on the whole but when everyone gets so shocked at sleep & feed I've started to get a complex about creating fatty bubs.

I should show you a pic of Jack he was the fattest baby and both me and DP are quite slim and now at 3 hes a skinny wee thing. I think you only need to be worried about fatties when they eat nothing but junk

I wouldn't worry about how much they are drinking, they are probably still playing catch up a bit with being prem. Any excess weight they might have will be worked off once they start to crawl etc anyway. Where are they on the plunket weight chart thingy? cos if they are tracking along the same percent line then they obviously aren't eating too much.

The sleep seems fine to me as well and probably explains why they drink so much in one sitting. Spencer use to feed two hourly and would drink 120-160m/l at that age. So taking into account that yours are feeding four hourly 270m/l isn't an outrageous amount for them to be having. Being up for just an hour is normal too and is what plunket recommend, you will probably notice over the next couple of months that they will start staying up for about 1.5 hours instead and then more and more once they are on solids and crawling and exploring.

My girls were the same sleepwise at that age. Although they never drank quite that much. Like Rach and Jack said they will be sleeping so much because they are feeding so well. I've read that feeding and sleep are very much connected to one another so if they are great feeders they'll be great sleepers and vise versa. Also when you think about how much growing they do in their first year thats a massive work out in its self so all that sleep is well deserved.

Our girls are great sleepers and feeders. As far as twins go your boys sound very similar to mine so I think we got really lucky

Thanks guys.

The plunket weigh-in before last had them scraping along the bottom 3rd centile for weight & way below for height, their latest they are now nearly the 25th percentile for weight (gained heaps) and still way behind the 3rd percentile for height.

Hadn't heard the whole eat heaps = feed heaps so that's good to know.

I think you just have hungry boys and babies are supposed to be fat! They are gorgeous fat! And they need it to grow and learn. You probably find that they sleep so well because they have lovely full tummies and they are happy and contented babies with a routine that suits them.
I think it just means that you are doing a great job! It must be such hard work having twins so well done you!

I wouldn't worry at all. They sound perfect and like they are doing exactly what they need to to grow.
