Has anyone noticed changes in their dog's behaviour since being pregnant? (You that is, not the dog).
We have two dogs who have grown up with each other and are the best of friends. Since I've been pregnant I can't pay too much attention to the number two dog as the dominant dog gets upset and attacks him.
It doesn't happen too often and there (thankfully) hasn't been any blood drawn, but I hate them fighting.

Not in that way, I'd be a bit worried about that behaviour, you need to figure out why the other dog is behaving like that.

No1 dog is feeling the need to protect you and show No2 who is the boss, this means No2 thinks he is now above you in the pecking order, this needs to change back to you being in charge. The best would be to contact a dog trainer and get them to give you some training before No2 dog feels the need to protect you when visitors come and definitely before the baby arrives.

Good luck, I dont think it would be that difficult to change things around :)

Our dog just started to jump the fence and takes himself for a walk, what he never did before.
He's also more protective of me now, but only when my husband is not around. I'm sure they sense something...Hope they all settle after baby arrives.

Hi LateStarterLorna
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm a bit confused though - why do you think No 2 thinks he's above me? He isn't instigating any trouble - it's the dominant dog who is.
I agree though, if it continues we will definitely be getting a dog trainer or whisperer. I want my loving, gentle dogs back!

Oh no! I hope they work it out soon!

Not the same, but when I was pregnant with my son, my cat figured it out at 6 weeks, and slept on top of my lower abdomen every night from then on! It was BIZARRE, because she never did it before. And then she tried to sleep on the baby's legs when he was a newborn! Crazy stuff. Unsurprisingly she's not so keen on him now that he's a toddler!

another cat story here - but my late cat (that was my fluffy baby) that always slept in my bed with me, often on my pillow, decided to spray my face in the middle of the night while I was pregnant with Roman - forgotten now how far along I was then, but was reasonably early....he had never ever done that before - we thought he was trying to mark his territory or something lol....

Yep, my dog (a large Bull/Neopolitan mastiff) went super protective of me when I was pregnant - he'd growl at any strange car that stopped in our driveway, barked at any familiar cars, and wouldn't let any other animals near me. In fact, he'd walk right beside me everywhere I went and switch sides if there was livestock close by to get between us (we live on a lifestyle block so we have cows and sheep). It concerned me somewhat, in so far as I wasn't sure how he'd be once baby was born.
The day I came home with our new son though, the dogs behaviour changed completely back to being a big easy going, mellow goofball of a dog, and he's stayed that way. Him and our son are the best of mates, rolling around beside each other, there are no jealousy issues or over-protectiveness issues at all, and the dog has stopped growling or barking at anybody - in fact we've had total strangers pull up outside when it's bub and I home alone and the dog hasn't even woken up to them!

My mother-in-law's dog become super protective of me too. He knew I was pregnant before we even did! I noticed with my first pregnancy that in the early weeks the dog (which never really took too much notice of me) was all of a sudden sitting beside me all the time and following me everywhere. I wondered then if dogs can sense you are pregnant. The second time around, we had been trying but I hadn't yet tested. We went to my mother-in-laws house and the dog did the same thing, followed me everywhere, sat right beside me all the time, and even slept outside the bedroom door where I was sleeping. That was the strangest of all as he also sleeps upstairs in my mother-in-law's room. A few days later a test confirmed what the dog already knew - amazing!
