Hi there
Are you able to give me your supervised settling timings of when you go in and out of the room? Also my major problem with my 12 week old daughter is the 1 sleep cycle where she sleeps for anywhere between 30-40 min only. Again are you able to give me your settling timings for when this happens? Today all 3 sleeps she woke at 35 and 40 min and I tried the side settling off and on for up to an hour and she would keep on waking and crying. I tried picking her up and cupping her but she was wide awake and wouldn't go back to sleep - I just don't know what to do!

Hi Dorothy - thanks heaps for yesterday. It was really enjoyable and lots of great stuff to try. Have had some success with extending day naps with my wee boy (17 weeks) and am going to try and settle without feeding in the night over the next couple of nights. Have noticed though that when I go in at the end of a nap or in the night-time, my baby's often wriggled right around in his cot so he'll often be sideways or upside down (head at feet end). I'm retty sure this wakes him up & would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks heaps!

Thanks for all the tips and advice on Monday!

Just a thought for looking ahead - I think we'll be dealing with teething in the near future, do you have any top tips for soothing/settling a teething baby [especially overnight] ?

Hi, thanks so much for your talk on Monday.

We have been settling our 4 and a half month old girl swaddled on her side, on our lap, swinging from side to side and its worked well for a long time but she's getting bigger (&stronger) and in the last few days has been protesting to the point that I've put her in the buggy for each nap and bed time. We're ready to settle her on her side in her bed as you described (and this worked really well during the night - thank you!), do you have any advice for when she screams and thrashes about? What do you think of those wedges you can get?

Secondly, I was wondering about the resettling to get longer naps or consolidate naps.. at the moment our wee one has 4-5 45 minute naps during the day) if she is only up for 1 and a half hours to 2 hours at a time and is then having a longer nap.. Does this mean a lot more sleep during the day & could this then affect how long she sleeps over night? (because her total sleep is ok as is)..sorry if I have baby brain and can't do the math!

Thank you in advance!

Hi thank you for your question. I have attached my notes on settling and resettling. Remember settling is teaching them to go to sleep and resettling is teaching them to stay asleep. I find that resettling is the harder one of the two but it is worth the time you put into it.

Hi some babies are just movers when sleeping and as long as they dont get into unsafe positions and their cots are safe i.e., no blankets or sheets, or thick bumpers then I tend to leave them free to do what they like - moving while sleeping.

I would however suggest using an air wrap mesh bumper which will avoid him hitting his head on the sides of the cot while allowing the air flow not to be disturbed.

Also are you sleeping him in a sleeping bag as again this is the safest way to sleep a baby once they are no longer swaddled.

If you are still concerned that his moving around is waking him then you could try a Safe T Sleep which will keep him in one place while sleeping.

Hi its always good to look in advance. FOr teething I tend to use alternative remedies during the day and offer nurofen during the night if it is required.     It is important when teething to remember that they actually need comfort rather than food and also something to take the edge of the pain.

I have never used the amber beads so cannot offer any thoughts on these.

I have attached my sheet that I give my clients on how to deal with teething.

Hi at 4 1/2 months I would recommend just popping her in the cot, however if you felt happier using the wedge then they are a good option.

I am not sure when she is doing the screams and thrashing around - you would have to explain whether this is going to sleep or when she wakes and is trying to resettle.

With regard to staying up 1 /2 to 2 hours and then having a longer nap it will not necessarily mean she will be sleeping longer during the day but it would mean that the 45 minute naps are consolidated so she would have lets say two naps of approx 1 1/2 to 2 hours and maybe 1 cat nap of 45 minutes. If she is staying up longer and sleeping longer then you may only need to do two naps a day.

I am a great believer that the more sleep they get the better they sleep at night.

If I havent answered your question clearly please email me so I can do this for you.
Regards Dorothy

Hi Ladies
Thank you for all your questions and hopefully the answers will help you. It was lovely to meet you all at the OHBaby Coffee Catchup.

Remember before you do anything STOP, THINK, and ACT – work out what you are doing, why you are doing, and what you are trying to accomplish and then act.

Remember YOU are the baby’s mum and so listen to your heart and instinct.   Yes, we all don’t do it by the book, or get it right the first time, but you need to make ‘mistakes’ to get it right for you.   It’s a time of learning a little person’s personality and figuring out what works for your home life.

If you have the time I would love to see you pop over to http://www.facebook.com/BabyWithin
and 'like' it. You can then keep up with information that I post from time to time or hear from other mothers who write on the wall.

Please remember as a parent or carer that you should understand and acknowledge that Dorothy is NOT a licensed medical doctor or other licensed medical provider and the information that I share with you has come from experience and working with numerous families and babies and toddlers
Regards Dorothy
