Hi Kelly
I notice that she only sleeps in this sack/swaddle overnight. I wonder how you sleep her during the day. My advice is that whenever you put her to bed whether for a nap or at nighttime that she should be going to bed in the same way ie., swaddled or in sleeping bag.

Does she sleep well in the daytime.

As I dont know the answers to my questions above I would suggest that you go with how you feel and I would start to take one arm out and see how it goes.   Be consistent for a minimum of 10 days.

Remember that some babies are swaddled for a long time and although I tend to take them out of their swaddles at 11 weeks, this does not suit all babies.

HI Kate
Firstly let me know what you think of the slumbersac sleeping bags if you decide to purchase them. I always like to hear back from people regarding products.

You haven't mentioned whether your son is eating solids yet and I would suggest you look at some of my earlier postings re introducing solids and vegetables and also routines for this age group.

Your question is regarding how long do you leave him to resettle in his cot at night before picking him up.   My answer to that is it does depend on what he is doing in his cot and also how long are you leaving him when you put him in his cot to go to sleep. I tend to spend at least 20 to 30 minutes resettling during nap times and at night, however this does depend on what the baby is doing and whether the baby is responding to the resettling technique. I also try and not pick them up out of the cot as it can be harder to put them back into bed, but again I do do this as well.

Have a look at the settling notes that I have posted on the forum and use these as a guideline.
Regards Dorothy

Hi
Okay as Jamie is approx 4 months I would suggest that his awake time is around 1 1/2 hours stretching out to around 3 hours when he is 6 months old.   His routine should look a little like this

6.00am Wakes, and feeds
7.15am Top up
7.30am Nap - minimum 1 1/2 hours resettle if he wakes before this

9.00am Wakes and feeds
10.15am Top up
10.30am Nap - this could be a moving nap where he wakes and resettles during the time - he may end up having 20 minute nap, wake and then another 20 minutes - times can vary

12.00pm Wakes and feeds
1.15pm Top UP
1.30pm Nap - minimum 1 1/2 hours resettle if he wakes before this

3.00pm Wakes and feeds
4.15pm Top up
4.30pm Nap - minimum 1 1/2 hours resettle if he wakes before this - or it can be a cat nap (band aid) to get through to evening routine time frame

6.00pm wakes and feeds (this can be slightly earlier)
Bath,
Top Up

7.30pm bed for the night.   When he wakes during the night always try and resettle before feeding. This ensures that you are feeding for hunger and not comfort.

Have a look at some of my earlier postings for settling and resettling notes and also on introducing solids and vegetables.

It is important that you get out of the house and I have suggested a moving nap in the mornings so you can do this.

Hi Ladies
Thank you for all your questions and hopefully the answers will help you. It was lovely to meet you all at the OHBaby Coffee Catchup.

Remember before you do anything STOP, THINK, and ACT – work out what you are doing, why you are doing, and what you are trying to accomplish and then act.

Remember YOU are the baby’s mum and so listen to your heart and instinct.   Yes, we all don’t do it by the book, or get it right the first time, but you need to make ‘mistakes’ to get it right for you.   It’s a time of learning a little person’s personality and figuring out what works for your home life.

If you have the time I would love to see you pop over to http://www.facebook.com/BabyWithin
and 'like' it. You can then keep up with information that I post from time to time or hear from other mothers who write on the wall.

Please remember as a parent or carer that you should understand and acknowledge that Dorothy is NOT a licensed medical doctor or other licensed medical provider and the information that I share with you has come from experience and working with numerous families and babies and toddlers

Hi Sarah
My apologises for missing the main part of your question.    I would be looking at resettling when he does the 45 minute cat naps so that you avoid this issue. Easier said than done I know.

I would ideally try for 2 long naps (minimum 1 1/2 hours) and his awake time of around 2 1/2 hours and see if this makes a difference to him waking at 3pm.

You are right you don't want him sleeping after 5pm otherwise it then interferes with going to bed around 7pm. YOu are better to put him to bed at 5.30 for the night.

So there is really not one answer for this question.

He could also go to bed for the night at 5.30pm, otherwise you could stretch his awake times out over the next month so that by 6 months he will be up for 3 hours and also do the resettling for his 45 minute cat naps.

Hope that helps
