Hi there, hoping to get some suggestions (or at least knowledge I'm not alone) for my 2 year old son who's sleeping has gone to the pack since the June 13 quake. He had been coping with the previous ones, but I guess the last one tipped him over the edge. He was a great sleeper (12 hours a night, self settled when I put him to bed) and now it's turned into having to lie beside him until he falls asleep and then he proceeds to wake 2 hourly and won't go back to sleep unless I'm lying next to him. He also seems to have periods of insomnia where he'll be awake for a couple of hours in the middle of the night. At some exhausted point in the night I put him into our bed. This has been the pattern every night for the last 3 months and I'm really worried about what the sleep depreviation is doing to his little body (and my mind!).

Perhaps a holiday is in order? We're out in Rangiora, so we dont feel as much as everyone else in CHCH, but Thomas slept thru the september one, was at preschool for the other 2 big ones and apparently didnt really notice! The baby however did wake up for the feb one but nothing else bothered her. We're very very lucky.

I know it sounds silly, but perhaps some kiddy councelling or something similar?

yea i know what you mean . i have a just turned 2yr old who was a bit young to notice the sept one , and feb one but since June she gets very jumpy everytime theres an aftershock and screams for me everytime ,  altho she is still a good sleeper . Its really hard on the little ones aye , esspecially because you cant talk to them about it .

Im sorry i wasnt much help . Hope you get some asnwers tho . perhaps go to your local GP , im sure its happening alot and he/she may have some calming techniques or suggestions for you to try , also maybe visit a health shop and see if there are any natural remedys you can use on toddlers for calming them down a bit at night time .

Hugs!

Mine is four and doing the same. I have to lie next to her, then i get into bed with DP and she wakes and cries for me and wont sleep without me there.

Last night i stayed in her bed and she woke 17 times!

I am exhausted.

I have a friend who is having major issues with her boy and going to sleep at night since the June earthquakes and I think she is trying to get some help for it. Apparently relationship services are offering free counselling (inlcuding for children) for people after the earthquakes. It might be worth looking into, especially since its free.
