I had an elective c section and for most things it took 6 weeks. I got a couple of infections however. But 6 weeks was the magic number most things just fell back into place and became easier.
I only had help with my 2 kids for the 1st 2 weeks also. :)

Of course major damage can happen in a car accident, but it can also happen as a passenger in the car too, so I think if you are prepared to go as a passenger post c/s whats the difference if you are the driver. Im my case I just drove myself, took the risk. Each to their own decision of course.

The difference is your not liable as a passenger! As a driver you are responsible for the vehicle and other passengers. You can also be charged with criminal offence. I wouldnt hesitate to go as a passenger after a c section no harm in just sitting there!!

To me its not major abdominal surgery,my womb wasnt removed/no ovaries etc are removed, no cancereous lump those to me are major abdominal surgery, a cut to open the uterus, birth the baby, suture the uterus closed. A baby is designed to leave the mothers body. Its not major, its a modern medical marvelous thing and I thank the OB's and theatre staff for this way to birth. We are soooo lucky in this day & age.
ive experience a VB and 2 x c/s
I actually didnt drive till 4weeks post VB as was in so much pain(thats another storey and thats the reason for c/s), to me a c/s is & was better to recover from than a VB, but thats just me, everyone is different.
I just want others to know that you dont have to stay at home for "6weeks" I never got a wee hand out with a list of do's/don'ts from OB or MW anytime I left the hospital with a baby.
Im just so lucky I had a fantastic experience from c/s and I want to share the NEWS!!!
I dont feel disadvantaged from c/s I feel enpowered! I dont think there is enough positiveness around c/s.

most insurance companies will not insure you for 6 weeks as part of their policy so you need to be careful about that. |
This isn't true. Insurance companies don't have a standard amount of time that you are not covered after any surgery. All you need is for your GP to say you are fit to drive and then you are fully covered. I asked my GP to put a note on my computer patient file at my check up with the date and that I was fit to drive.

I think it depends on the person as to how long it takes for your recovery, the insurance company we are under says 6 weeks unless you have clearance from your doctor.
I didn't drive until after 6 weeks and only went in the car 3 times in the 6 weeks - I was lucky enough not to need to go out in the car- but someone said to me if you had to break suddenly would you
a) be able to without a second thought for your injury and
b) do you think if you had to break suddenly you might do damage to your stomach/op sight.
I was able to do heaps of stuff and recovered rather quickly but the thought of driving and lifting the capsule into the car was near impossible for me - so we went for short walks with buggy instead.

I had an elective due to a breech bub. I was really scared about it but it wasnt as bad as i thought.
Went in at 7am, got all prepped which took ages as they couldn't get the spinal to work properly, started surgery around 9, baby out at 9.21,skin to skin while they stitched me up, then my temp dropped heaps and i almost fainted so they took us away to recovery and i had to be under warming blanket for an hour or so until my temp came up to a level where i was allowed up to the ward. was on morphine pca for most of the day, took it quite often but it made me feel really woozy and sick, couldnt eat anything and i was starving so asked them to take it off around dinner time. was then on tramadol, and an anti-inflammatory (cant remember the name of it now) and then panadols. I took pain relief very regularly because i didnt want to feel any pain. i was still quite uncomfortable at times though.
breastfeeding (once established) was no problem at all, and i'm still going. the first night was hard because I couldn't move, and I dropped my call buzzer on the ground and couldn't reach it, and couldn't reach bubba either when she cried - finally managed to scoot over and grab it, but it's hard not moving! the next morning they got me up and moving and i had a shower - amazing how great that makes you feel! It was super hard for me to walk as it hurt a lot but i tried to walk as much as i could because they said it does help with your recovery. went home on day 4 and continued with the pain relief until i ran out.
didn't drive until about 6 weeks (i didnt need to) and being a passenger was pretty painful too. definately hurt if i did anything too much too soon (like a load of washing!!) but overall recovery was pretty easy. the only thing was my scar was itchy and numb (still is a lot of the time, gets super itchy at times)but apparently that is normal.
bled for nearly 7 weeks which was annoying! (but still haven't got my AF back so guess that makes up for it haha)
