My DS is 5 months. He is exclusively BF. When he was new born I would expresses and my Mum or DH could feed DS - he took the bottle with EBM fine. I have since stopped expressing as found it to time consuming and with DH working shifts, DS would not take the bottle off me and so I had no need to express. I am now finding my milk supply lessening and am keen to get him back on the bottle. I would like to have him exclusively on formula in July as I am heading away for 10 days and wont be with DS. I do not have enough BM to feed him and express now and do not want to be expressing whilst I am away. So I have 2 months to get him on to formula, but trying over the last week has prooved a disaster with DS not even opening his mouth for the bottle - either with EBM or forumla (tried Novlak - reflux and Karicare). I am also away next weekend for one night and need DS to take from a bottle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I know that feeling all too well!! We couldnt get Jackson to take EBM either. Anyways I finally got him to take it 3 weeks ago but he is so fussy with it its a joke really.

Have you tried different teats? Can your DH try giving him the bottle so he cant smell you? I gave DS EBM tonight but had to give him booby then quickly take him off and slip in the bottle which worked ok. He took the whole 80mls of EBM thankfully.
I dont have any other advice cos I tried everything too with no luck.

I hope you can get it sorted soon.

I have had the exact same issues with my DS, and he is the same age.   No matter what I did, he refused.   My supply was drastically dropping in the evenings and we were only getting like two hours sleep day and night.

But.. I have cracked it!

Nuk bottle, latex teat = SUCCESS!   The small flat teat is perfect as J wouldn't open his mouth for the other ones, and would just gag and scream but the smaller latex teat is just perfect.

Not sure if you've tried the Nuk bottles yet but they were my absolute life saver.   We've gone from 1-3 hours sleep at night to 6-7 hours in less than a week because he has a top up before bed.

Good luck!

The Nuk bottles and teats are great we use a 6-18 month med flow for DD who is 6 months and BF. There are lots of different ideas on how to get BF babies to take a bottle. For us I offered the bottle at the same feed everyday until she took it. Others suggest doing a day of bottles only while Mum expresses instead of feeding (I couldn't do this). I would offer at the same time each day, it took about 2 weeks for DD to take it, and give a teat with out a bottle attached to play with, while you are watching closely of course! This will make the teat familiar.

Good luck as it as it's not easy to get a BF baby to take a bottle.

i tried nuk and all the other high priced ones...the only thing that he took was the cheap brown rubber or latex ones...the ones the sharlene (baby whisper) has mentioned......spent a fortune on him only to find that those ones worked best........every baby is soooooo different good luck
ps my girl still refuses and she has been drinking from one of thos sippers with the soft spout since 4mnths maybe that would work for you too........nothing saying you have to start on bottle

sipper you get from supermarket...i think i have a tomme tippee one and another new type but they all look similiar they have a valve so its the same flow as teat....and they get to hold it themselves which if he is anything like my girl he will love....the teat you can there too ...its just the old school one.....its firmer so they cant move it around with there tongue....my boy had closure to nature but it was too soft but he did take it when he was born.....try this link ...this is one type i have baby sipper

Perhaps try giving baby something to play with to distract them while having bottle... DS wont take a bottle unless he's playing with a toy/fiddling with a tag or something.

Jake stopped drinking out of a bottle ages ago, DH gives him EBM in a sipper cup (nuby one with the top made from the same material as a bottle teat, the only one he would drink from!!!). Worked a treat

ok well if you 100% need to do this i would suggest giving all the bottles etc including differrent sachets of formular with someone for the night when he is hungry he will feed unfortantly its gonna be a rough road...i cant do it cause i cant cope with kids crying but he will be fine and if he doesnt drink then he will put himseflf to sleep....my kids both did the same...thats why ty didnt take it till 9mnths.....you stressing wont help you are baby hun. go out for a trail even during day if it gets too bad for the person then get them to call you and you can always come back........my mum just said that i took milk from a shot glass...mmmmm wonder if thats why i have never drunk lol.......worth a shot...will take a long time but if he is taking it then at least you get a break :-) all the best and im sorry cant be more help

I am heading overseas for 10 days in late July - so hopefully by then he will take the bottle. If not I dont know what I will do!!! But this Friday night I am out and can't get out of it...so DS is with my Mum for the night. I know I wont relax and I know stressing doesnt help but I cant help it!! My DH is not much help he just gets frustrated... thanks for your tips and support. I was wondering about just not offering the boob and then when he was hungry he would take the bottle, but someone said to me today he could get dehydrated. Plus when he cries it gets hysterical and I cant stand that...crying is ok, but hysterical crying I cant cope with!

they can get dehydrated but it will have to be a couple of days for that to happen and im guessing he is eating solids so you can offer him water....if day one goes and he doesnt drink even a sip every 10 mins .........you said he took some from syringe so im pretty sure you will be fine.......where do you live? oh and yip hubbys are great like that.........its funny but i had booked tickets to egypt 2 weeks after ty turned 1 we where flying out...i started stressing when he was 6mnths cause he wouldnt take anything then we sat outside one day and told mum it was time for a BF she told me to get a bottle with formular (by the way some babies like warm some like cold milk) and to go inside....gave it to her she singed to him and the bugger took it....then again at night from hubby.........and all this just 2 mnths from flying out....little bugger.... mind you if you could hear my mother sing you would want to drink up so you could get the heck out of there too. here is another suggestion....get your mum to wrap herself in something of yours dressing gown etc do you feed in dark? in a special chair? then she holds with one arm under like she is BFng...now im all out of ideas.....ps none of thos actually worked for me anyway :-) hopefully for you ...soemthing may

You could also try a normal cup. Esme drinks water from a plasic cup she sits upright and we tip it for her. She loves it and gets more out of it than a sippy cup.

I know how stressful it is when they don't take it. Esme won't drink a bottle at all while she is at daycare and she has at least one dry nappy on those days but she is happy and has no other sign of dehydration. So missing one feed isn't going to hurt dehydration wise anyway.
