why would you take a bunch of preschool kids to the CBD on Christmas eve? surely lots of parents want to pick them up early? Maybe the teacher had some christmas shopping to do?!

Like the others said, sometimes there can be a blanket permission form to sign as part of enrolment form for short walks etc. Anything further, particularly involving more than walking (bus or car) should have a separate notice and permission form. No way is 6 or 7 kids with one teacher ok on an outing! And there should NOT be jsut one teacher out with kids either, there should always be two at least. What if one child is injured or something while they're out - what do they do with the rest of them?? (unless, like someone else said, they are just out with one child).
Have a look at their excursion policy and see what they are supposed to be doing for excursions, and what the adult:child ratio is supposed to be.

I wouldn't be impressed with that sort of adult/child ratio, or having my DD go on a bus trip without my permission either. Saying that, at my DD's daycare they often take the kids on a walks around the neighbourhood (without asking our permission) and I'm fine with that. They always have plenty of staff in attendance. I'm guessing I probably signed something when she enrolled.
I'm on the NS too. Would love to know what DC you're talking about. PM me if you like

Wow!!!! Thats stupid, i would be very upset also. DS gets to go for walks now and then, about 500 metres down the road to see the cows etc, but that is it. Any other trip must be signed for, and like you i also make sure a family member goes on things like that... I know they will look after him but im more comfortable going myself or a family member.
Glad the trip went with out any problems, but that is also by far not the point. For now enjoy xmas and then sort it out when she goes back.

That is pretty crazy, taking small children into the city on Xmas eve?
We have to sign permission slips at least a week prior for trips at the boys daycare. I think it's a ratio of 1 adult to 3 children. They do take them for walks, but that is on the property, and I am fine with that, But like everyone else, I would seriously be questioning the taking of trips without permission.

that does sound really strange!! I dont blame you for being unhappy at the scenario, and it does seem an unusual place to take wee ones of xmas eve! Let us know how you get on chatting with them about it!

shocking! You are right to be upset and appalled. This is BAD practice. I'm an early childhood teacher and NEVER would I do this or the centre I work in.
To start with YOu need parent permission, and a notice that clealry outlines where the children are going what time, what transports used, who is going meaning how many adults to children. Lenght of time e.t.c and all the risks involved.
As this was a BIG trip going on a bus to central auckland! the parent would need to read through the hazard/ risk form and approve or dissaprove.
Even if you signed a permissoion slip when your daugther started that would only be for local walks within a few kms of the centre NOT for bus trips and big trips.
Ask to see the form and check.
Action: I would as a paretn ring the minisrty of ed's office they are in mt eden and ask them.
I would say hi just have a question recenlty at my daughters daycare a teacher took 6 or 7 children out for a trip on a bus to the mall? is this o/k?
I was concerned.
They are eay to talk to and will clear things up.

That's not on to me and I would be upset as I expect to know where my child is while I am at work.
I would definitely be looking in to that if I was you.
I'm on the shore too. Do you mind PMing me so I know to be aware of that one?
And who takes a group of young kids out on Christmas Eve - nuts!

They took them to the CBD without your explicit consent???? I'd be ropeable.
How does it work legally with kids being on buses but not in child restraints? I agree with your OP about them being too young to be travelling without restraints.

Yep i would be mad as well, and sounds like a lot of kids to one teacher. I did sign a form for outings with my DD preschool, but they still get permission form for bus trips and it's usually 1 adult to 2 kids, and invite parents to join.......really doesn't sound right, i would ring and check as someone above suggested.
Good luck

Where I work, we have parents sign a slip when they enroll that allows us to take the kids out on walks or to the park, but never in anyform of transport
When we have done big trips that involve a bus or car then seperate permission forms go out weeks before so we can arrange extra teachers/parents.
