Topic: Another daycare issue! Posted: 24 December 2010 at 10:15am |
Does your school/daycare take your child on outings without your knowledge/permission?
I popped past the supermarket after work one day and saw one of my daughters daycare teachers there with 6 or 7 of the kids from her daycare. My heart stopped for a second until I saw my daughter wasnt one of them and I assumed their parents must have ok'd it.
Today I got my daughter to daycare late and the kids were all gathered together. A teacher told me they were all going on the bus to a park or the mall.
I was very unhappy but felt ambushed and ended up leaving our 3 year old with her. DH is furious with me - justifiably. We dont allow her to go on school outings without one of us going along.
And I'm miserable. I dont want her on a bus or any other vehicle without a carseat. I dont want her near a road without a parent. And I certainly dont want her in a crowded shopping mall on christmas eve without me there
Is it normal for daycares to do this? What if I'd dropped her at normal time and gone to fetch her early as I'd planned... if I got there to find she wasnt there I think I'd have had a meltdown. I'm already having a bit of a meltdown because I wasnt big enough to say "hell no."

Do you know that they go without your permission? I'm not sure that they are allowed to that's all. Our daycare will always ring and get permission from a parent and they tend to go in pretty small groups. Sometimes it's two or three children only and with two adults even with that small a group - for example, DS went on a train trip to the library the other day with a couple of other children only.

at my daughters (she doesnt go there now) daycare any outings they had there was a notice at least a few days early and a sheet of paper that you signed if you gave permission.
I do think more notice than the morning should be given

I think this is disgusting. Surely there has to be a permission slip signed etc. I would definately be questioning the management of this establishment.

I have a strong feeling I wouldnt have been told at all if I hadnt told one of the teachers I would be fetching her early.
The teacher said "oh, do you have to fetch her early?"
And I said "why?"
And thats when she said "because we're taking them to the park or mall and we'll only be back after 1pm"

I'm fairly certain that they are required to have your permission to take children off their property. Just in the same way that schools are required to have permission. I definitely wouldn't be happy with mine going anywhere without permission.

At DS's daycare I had to sign a form to say I gave my permission for them to take Caden on little outings, I said it was ok.
They often go for walks to the park and stuff.
ETA and they have like 3 kids to one adult or something, cant remember exactly. I trust my sons daycare teachers 100% they are brilliant, but I do still feel a bit...nervous about him going some where without me!

That's terrible and seems really strange that they would think that was ok! Was there a form you signed when your daughter started? Maybe there was some info in there about it?

I dont know if we signed a form about it when we started but I am going to check with the centre owner and if we did I'd like to amend it so that they can only take her on outings with our permission and knowledge of each time. Rather than a blanket "yes its ok"

I find it odd that they would take the kids out without telling parents in case they were to be picked up earlier in the first place.
Did you sign anything when you enrolled her there that may of said the odd walk out...may pay to check. If you are not happy with her leaving the centre without your permission/knowledge (fair enough), then put it in writing & talk to the head teacher.
I worked in a centre yrs ago & we had set days we walked the older kids to the train bridge to watch the trains & the local park, the parents knew & it was part of our program. I often went to the supermarket 2min walk to get nappies or stuff & took a child with me, usually the little boy who I baby sat for.
I have to sign permission for my kids to go on school & kindy trips & would NOT be happy if they went off on a bus without me knowing.
I dropped off DS3 at kindy one morning on the last week to see a sign up asking for mums to walk with them that morning as the were taking the kids out (4+yrs) for a walk. I have not problem with that but if I had know I would of walked with them & I think they should of asked for a signed permission before taking them of the grounds.
As a parent you need to know where your kids are, if I drop them off at school or kindy that is where they should be till I pick them up unless I say otherwise.

This sounds very odd and wrong to me.....In all the years my daughter has been at creche, kindy and school they have always sent home a permission slip at least a week in advance.
I would be pretty unimpressed and concerned at the lack of teacher/parent communication they seem to have going on there

The thing I signed was for "small outings" ie to the dairy or the park etc, for big bus trips and stuff they send home a form at least a week before the trip, and we have to sign it and bring it back.

It's against the regulations to take them off the centre premises without parental consent. I'm shocked this centre does this! I would definatley be speaking to the head teacher or management.

Do you know any of the other parents with children there? Maybe have a quiet word to them as well and see if they are aware of it. I can't imagine many parents would be impressed with their children being taken on outings without asking their permission first.

I'm an early childhood teacher ... and i do not think that it's ok to be taking children on bus to maybe the park or mall!!!!!
Every excursion we go on unless it is a 4km radius of preschool and the parents have signed a form and no they going has to have a risk assessment form filled out this is required by the ministry of ed!!!!!
When parents enrol their child they can sign a form giving permssion to take their children on short walks but we always still seek their prior to the walk!!!! I would be very annoyed if i turned up and my daughter was not at daycare and i didn't know!!!!!! Talk to the manager/ Head teacher...
Also it's xmas eve....

Yip thats the same at our daycare!
When J was in the under 2's they went by minivan with carseats, now she is with the big kids they go in a big bus and don't have carseats (which i was iffy about) but the littlest ones sit with a teacher or parent. So far they have been to the honey farm and the fire station.

I have signed a form at daycare to say I am happy for them to take DS on day trips (not that they ever do, hes too young), they should get your permission first though.
