took us 7 months to get pregnant with Ella....despite messing up my pill on honeymoon

If 100 couples with "normal" fertility started TTC today each of them having a 20% chance of conception each month then....

In the first month 20 couples would get pregnant
In the second month 16 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 36%)
In the third month 13 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 49%)
In the fourth month 10 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 59%)
In the fifth month 8 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 67%)
In the sixth month 7 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 74%)
In the seventh month 5 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 79%)
In the eighth month 4 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 83%)
In the ninth month 3 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 86%)
In the tenth month 3 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 89%)
In the 11th month 2 more couples would get pregnant (cumulative pregnancy rate 91%)
And at the end of one year with a further 2 couples falling pregnant in the 12th month the cumulative pregnancy rate would be 93%

Leaving 7 couples with completely normal fertility who have been unlucky enough not to fall pregnant in the first 12 mths of TTC.

The generally accepted stat is 20% of people will conceive the first month of TTC, and 90+ % will conceive within one year. Absolutely true. Maya was a very unplanned 'accident' baby (ie. no trying at all!), 11 months and 12 cycles to conceive our angel, 6 weeks and 1 cycle to conceive the gremlins. yes it really does depend on the individual. i have endo and pcos but for both pregnancies, we got preggy basically the first night of trying.

I don't think there is really such a thing as average as everyone has said. I know what you mean though - before we started TTC #1, I too wanted to know what the 'average' was - I decided it was going to take 6 months (ignorance is bliss) and it only took us a few days! I would say don't TTC until you are ready for it can really take you by surprise. This time we'are allowing 6 months too - fingers crossed it will be sooner. So I guess the message to take from that is that knowing the average is actually not all that helpful! In the end, the average doesn't matter, its where you lie relative to the average. Until you start trying, you just don't know whether you are going to be pregnant immediately, or take many months. (And from what I understand, even how easy it was for a previous pregnancy isn't always a great indicator).
I too wish I knew exactly how long it would take, so I could start trying the right amount of time before hand, but obviously thats not possible. I think the best approach is to start as soon as it would be ok for you if you got pregnant right away. If you start any sooner, you might get a baby really quickly, before you are quite ready, but if you start as soon as you are ready, at least if it takes a while, you've still got a bit of a head start (and if it doesn't take a while, its not too soon either!). Its hard though, isn't it?
I'm thinking we might start TTC in about 18 months - DH and I have a few other goals to reach first in terms of our careers, travel and a new and bigger house. Thats what I'm afraid of, I don't have any fertility issues quite the opposite. I'll be trying this time next year same as you ClaireW. I've given myself until next Christmas to be pregnant, knowing my luck it will happen on the first try and I'll be a mum 6 month sooner. I feel like the unpredicatability of conception is an indication of things to come. I also made the same mistake as Nzpiper! I have PCOS and thought it would take us a while to conceive. It took us one go! If you are over 35 as I will be next year Its after 6 months of trying when you need to look at fertility issues.
Depends also on how meticulous you are with charting or if you just go for it and BD as often as you choose.

Be careful thinking it might take time. We assumed that both being in our 30s things might take a while. Hi Clarie, welcome to OB, hope you enjoy it here.

With my 1st it only took 2 mths, but with my 2nd (pregnant now) it took 10mths. Apparently the average length of time to concieve is about 12mths.

We went to see our doctor after 6mths cos i am 33 and so is hubby and we just wanted to make sure everything was okay...and it was, we were just getting the wrong time of the month it seems.

Hello

I was just wondering what the average length of time is to conceive. We are trying to plan when would be a good time for us to TTC (at least a year away) and we know it probably won't happen straight away. Also I've heard you have to be trying for at least a year before a doctor will consider fertility problems - is this right?
