So that may be a solution to any money woes that you may have. Sorry I don't know how much you get.

My work haven't found a replacement for me yet either and I finish up on the 17th August, my views on that is it's their problem not mine, the way I've been treated lately at that place, it's almost like Karma that they haven't found anyone.

Your family is definitely number one priority, and you would be making the right choice by putting them first and not your work place.

It's not like you haven't given your work notice to get someone else in. My employer still hasn't replaced me and I've been on leave for over nine months! I feel sorry for the others in my office who have to take up the slack, but it's not my fault, just as it's not your fault if your office is caught short for a little while. You sound very conscientious and the kind of person some employers will take advantage of - even if it is inconvenient for them, it's not the end of the world and they will continue on with business. I went in asap and told work, who also hadn't organised a replacement for me (not my problem) so I did part days for three of the days in the following week to get someone up to speed in my job enought to cover till they could get someone in to do it and finished, floating out on annual days I hadn't taken and leiu days I had up my sleeve. At the end of the day, while I would say don't burn your bridges, no one ever dies thinking damn, I wish I spent less time with my family and more at work. Also, out it this way, if your work dosen't have the compassion to let you leave early, are they a company you really want to work for, considering when you return to work as a mum, you will be taking waaaaay more (sick) time off!

Pretty much the conclusion I had drawn too. My Grandmother is 99 (due to turn 100 in November), and she seems to improve a little when she has someone there with her and talking to her. I feel like I'd be doing her and my family a disservice if I went back to work, and didn't do my bit to help get Grandma back from where she is now.

    Author: busymum
Subject: 8736
Posted: 02 July 2007 at 8:18pm

Hi Mookey, when I was pg with my DD1, I was one of two secretaries in a small office and the only full time secretary. I told my boss as soon as I knew I was pregnant, and although I was due at Christmas, he did nothing. Asked him in August what he was going to do to replace me and he didn't know. September didn't know. October didn't know. November still didn't know but thought he might have someone in mind. By this time the other secretary was pressuring me a lot to stay until my due date (the office would have closed for Christmas about a week before my due date) but I didn't want to do 9m pg body plus full-time work. I was exhausted. In the end my boss finally got a replacement but because he dawdled so long, she couldn't start til January and a temp had to be got in for December.

Well after all that ramble, I just wanted to say that if I were you I'd get the letter and take the time off. Family is always more important than work and if you didn't take the time off you may regret it later - sometimes there are no second chances. Tell your boss tomorrow that you'll be leaving asap, commit to the end of the week, or 1/2 your hours until the end of next week or something like that if you want to - but it would be a courtesy. And whatever they say about getting a replacement for you, it's a shame they hadn't got organised by now but it's not your responsibility.

I hope your grandmother gets better soon too.

    Author: Mookey
Subject: 8736
Posted: 02 July 2007 at 8:11pm

I'm 30 weeks preggers, and due to finish work in 5 weeks. I will then have 2 weeks paid annual leave and my paid maternity leave will start when I'm 37 weeks. At the end of last week my Grandmother had a fall, and we spent the weekend at the hospital. She has been up and down in a semi-comatose state, so we're still unsure of what the future holds. We only have a small family and we are really close, so this has come as a huge shock. My Mum, sister and I are taking turns by her bedside. I emailed my boss to explain the situation and that I won't be at work for a while, and he told me we would treat this time off as annual leave (unpaid).
Work still haven't organised a replacement for me, and the situation with my Grandmother is highly stressful. My specialist would give me a cert to finish work now if I wanted to, and we can (just) afford for me to go without pay until my maternity pay kicks in. I feel kinda guilty for leaving work in the lurch, but kinda think that it's not my responsibility that they've not organised a replacement for me yet, and at a time like this family and looking after myself is more important. I've discussed it with Mum, and she said it would definitely take some of the pressure off her. What would you do in this situation? Cheers.
