I'd hop along to the GP/midwife to get the little guy checked out and then if that is all clear, try and find a plunket family centre near by - they can watch you feeding him and possibly offer more support. Until he's three or four months, sleeping through the night for large stretches is reasonably uncommon. What do you do during the wake up time? Sometimes if you end up turning lights on, flicking the TV on and settling in babies can think it's Mum and me play time. The other thing you can do is look at what you are eating at lunch or dinner...things like onions, spicy food, cabbage and even chocolate can hit the little guy through the breast milk and give him a sore tummy.

It's almost like he's not hungry for a feed but wants to suckle. Are you happy to try a dummy? It's an easy way to see if he is hungry or just wants to suckle. Does he seem well?

When is your next mw appointment? Don't let her put you off if you think something is wrong. GP vists are free for babies too.

    Author: mamanee
Subject: 8228
Posted: 13 June 2007 at 11:52am

Oh dear god I have no idea what my son is doing, but I am not getting any sleep!

Sam usually sleeps for about 3.5 hours. Three times now (not in a row) he has woken up at the normal time. So I get his bottle ready and start feeding him.

He takes about 10mls or so then starts pushing the bottle out. So I take it out and wait a few seconds. He is immediately making frantic motions towards the bottle again. So I put it back in his mouth. This time he gets three sucks out of it and then starts moving his head from side to side like he doesn't want it. So I take it out. He then starts making the frantic sucking motions again like I haven't fed him in a week. Same thing, over and over and over again. He takes three or four sucks, spits it out, then wants it again. On top of this, he is spitting up a lot of what he does get. This goes on and on for sometimes an hour and a half. If he gets more than three sucks out of it, he starts choking and coughing and spluttering which is terrifying!

He is burping fine, although this time his burps bring up some of his feed.

I have no idea what to do! He did this at midnight last night too!

Is it me? Is it the bottle? He has the tommee tippee closer to nature ones. Is it the teat hole? It's got a little 1 on it.

I'm going to lose my mind if this continues, so any help is much appreciated!

He also sounds like he may have a sore throat?

Edited by neeandsam
