putting blinkers on your pet's collars is a great idea. The other points related to the topic are also well defined. Please check and try street lights for the lighting system in the streets I found this topic helpful because I also experienced this problem. my cat pet was lost in the park. I've had a bad week ...

I bought the book from Amazon, have bought coffee twice (complete with treats) and I bought two pottery bowls yesterday ($15). I have such a weakness for pottery Still, they were $15 for the 2, and I'd budgeted to buy some bowls for xmas as we are having a big family thing, and I have very little in the way of that sort of thing, and the ones I'd intended to buy (from Sabato) are [not telling] EACH! But, I still feel bad.

I did do well with my groceries last night though - $177, and that was with DH taking the p*ss and swopping all my non-name branded stuff out of the trolley while I wasn't looking, for named brand stuff ... except for when I bought some (Flemings) rolled oats to make dog treats (Schmackos are $8 a packet, so am going to try and make my own!) and he stood there in the aisle, and asked in a really loud voice if I really needed to buy a named brand product to make dogs treats?

we got the storybook lion to hang off it too...forgot about buying that....guy at warehouse was putting toys back and i got it for $10.....mum thinks ella will now think all lions are blue!!!

I too would say the Discovery Dome is a worthwhile investment - it certainly has been for us ! But I do have to say Emma, you should have asked me first... (Can explain why another time.)

I also went to the red shed though, and walked out with a Tickle Me Elmo Extreme, plus a Hi-5 CD (sorry Gen!)

Actually he has 5 - 3 full albums, 1 is totally his own work and 2 are covers and the other 2 are mini albums, couple of songs each. He also has another 15 orginal recordings he is planning on putting together for an album too plus a busy tour schedule. He's unsigned though so his albums are only available directly from him through this site.

One of his songs is playing on my MySpace page at the moment.

Tim's also got his own recordings but I don't think he has an album.

Lizzle - pet blinkers are small LED lights which flash in 2 different colours (blue and white, pink and green, that sort of thing) which I attach to the dog's collars when walking at night (you can get them from Foodtown). You can honestly see the dogs for miles walking down the street - good for other walkers, and cars as well as they know we're there. Plus, when the little toads are running around in the bush at the park, you can't see them, but you can see the lights moving about so you know where they are! i went to the warehouse today and brought chrissie pressies for the kids - we got home and gabriel said can i get the toys out of the car - NO!!!!

i never budget for groceries but we always spend roughly $250 a fortnight sometimes more sometimes less. i do have AP's for my phone, power and savings every fortnight tho and more often than not i am in credit for them...

Ok so I am nowhere near as good at budgeting as Gen, but we budget $300 a fortnight for groceries, and our big shop has only been hitting around $220-30 including a weeks worth of fruit, veges and milk. The rest is for fruit, veges and milk top ups, and for the last couple of fortnights we have had a surplus ranging from $15-30 dollars. I was wondering. We are going to do the 1 month no spent thing from the 15th to thhe 15th.

But I see a lot of us (me big one included) is struggling with the food budget things. Maybe we should either put our weekly or fortnightly bills on food here or at least what we end up eating and how much the cost was in total for the food and what was more or less bought. That way we can learn from each other.

My budget is $200 a week for the three of us. That includes everything except nappies for McKayla. So it only really included wet wipes. It include all food and lunches and take aways need to come out of that as well. I pay McKayla pocket money of $10 a week out of it and can buy some stuff now and then out of it. Ermmm ... the dog food isn't included in that budget, although their treats and most of the cat food is (the dog and cat bickies come from Jansens and come under my houshold expenses budget). The dogs aren't actually that expensive to feed - I buy one bag of bickies a month which costs $100.00, so about $12.50 per dog per week to feed which isn't a huge amount I don't think.

Basically I sat down and made a list of anticipated expenses such as rates, water rates, pet vaccinations and flea/worm treatments, dog/cat bickies, car expenses, that sort of thing for a year, and then broke it down into a fortnightly amount. I find that much easier. Plus I pay rates fortnightly, and am thinking about doing water rates monthly as it's easier than getting a big bill quarterly!

Oh, and this is my grocery budget/disaster...

I allow $450 a fortnight (and always run over) which covers all food (incl bread and milk during the week - we go through about a loaf of bread a day!!), cleaning stuff, meat and veg. Realisically we spend more like $550. Considering it's just the two of us, that seems like a lot.

I'm not entirely sure how I can improve it. I do meal plan, so that's not the problem. Gen suggested going away from named brands (good idea! I've always been sceptical about whether they're as good to be really honest, but not trying them on that basis seems a bit silly when I think about it), and as far as pasta sauces etc go, I am going to try and make my own (I like things like canneloni - it's a meat meal, but a bit cheaper than steak etc), and I'm trying to cycle in one or two non-meat meals a week (we have meat every night), but I suck in the cooking department, so am trying to work on easy basic stuff (go the mac & cheese!).

I'm a bit the same Nikki - I can't really see any particular success in my budget, although we are closer to having survived just on Al's salary, with mine going directly onto catching up on the expenses that have put our Visa seriously in the red (the cars, the TV, the big expenses we've had!). I suppose that is a success really

I'm going to take better note this month of how things are going, and up the ante a bit effort wise.

Technically the apron is to preserve my clothes when I cook dinner because I make a dreadful mess, and what I'm wearing usually ends up in the wash DH has been trying to get me to buy one for forever because I'm such a disaster! That's my justification, and I'm sticking to it

As for the canisters, I busted our beautiful ceramic ones, and I've been on the look out for about a year for new ones, and have just been using mugs with glad wrap over the top for sugar etc and DH makes a terrible mess with them. Anyway - I found some that I liked which were $25 each, but I really wanted some heinously expensive ceramic ones ... so feel a little bit pleased with myself that I settled pretty happily on the cheaper plastic ones (that are still lovely BTW).

I am going to do an end of month round up of my successes and failures, and get started on a new month. Like Ginger my big thing this month is going to be cutting down on groceries. I do a big fortnightly shop which is usually around $200 (exc. formula, meat and veg) but then I make 3-4 trips a week to Countdown for "extras" just coz the gremlins love sitting up in the trolley. I've been a bad girl

Yesterday:

Apron - $39.95

Kitchen canisters x 2 - $16.95 each

Tea towels - $16.95 for 2

Shampoo and conditioner - $57.60. It comes out of the grocery budget, but still, I had dregs in the cupboard which I could have made to last for another week at least.

Hair product - $30.00. Vital to life so doesn't count . It's the only product I have ever found which will control the curly ginger mop successfully!

Foundation - $70.00. It's the only make up I wear, but still. Ouch.

Coffee - $3.50 at the Botany meet and greet

Sunday:

Stock pot for soups (I make a lot of soup for us) - $29.99 (50% off at Farmers).

So, very naughty weekend for me.

BUT on the plus side, I managed to stop DH from buying a $17,000.00 car!


My aim for July is to work on my grocery bill. I nearly fell off my chair, and was hideously embarrassed at my own excesses, when Gen told me that she manages to feed a family of 3 on $200.00 a fortnight. I can't feed 2 of us (although, technically, DH should be counted as 2 people he requires that much fuel!) on that a week, so my goal is to get our grocery bill down.

There is going to be some spending this week though - I'm on jury service, and I went and scoped out the parking today to find that there is none. NONE!! In order to still be paid by work, I have to go immediately from the Court to the office if I am not on a jury any one day. So, it's going to be taxis for me. I'm not going to be able to pee around with buses. Plus, I have a terrible fear of buses anyway (several years ago there was a girl murdered in GI ... Kylie someone. She and I were on the same bus home the night she was killed, I just got off a couple of stops before her. I haven't been able to get on a bus since.). Hopefully they will reimburse my taxis, or part of them, but I'm not going to bank on it. Mostly it's stuff I've bought on a whim that doesn't quite fit right, or that I love, but doesn't flatter my figure ... you know how it goes! This jersey I adored, but they only had one size in the store. They could bring one in from another store in my size, but because it was on sale ($260 down to $150 or something) I had to do a sale by mail. As in, pay for it, no refunds. I've been good on the spending front this week - except for the $800 on the car, and $400 on the TV being fixed, and then yesterday Al's MP3 player bit the dust The way I'm feeling at the moment though, the temptation to go shopping, get my hair done, anything that might make me feel more cheerful about life is HUGE. Except, then I'll be grumpy that I blew my budget

My car goes back into the garage today But since they mucked it up, they have to pay for it, so it's not really my problem other than the pain in the a*sedness of having to go back to the poxy little courtesy car. I am still plodding along, pretty broke atm which makes not spending pretty easy

I must confess that I have ordered two pairs of baby legs each for the gremlins, but they are super cheap, and at the moment they are wearing baby legs pretty much full time under their clothes for warmth so they are *kinda* a neccessity.

I haven't been reading the mailers either, but I made the mistake of opening the Warehouse one yesterday They are having a huge toy sale I'm considering doing a small layby for the gremlins, as they have 3 month layby and the gremlins birthday is in a little over 3 months. How we all going girls?? I'm pleased to say still no unneccessary spending.

We did have to give in and get our weed *ahem* I mean daughter some more clothes as she is gowing out of eveything faster than lightening and we picked up some extra groceries. However I put the magazines back, didn't buy coffee or breakfast yesterday when it would have been the easy way out (early morning trip to the dr for Maddie and I hadn't eaten or slept!!).

My bank balance will love me soon no doubt!!

I went on the zoo trip today, and packed a picnic and baked a choccie cake to share, and somehow scored a hot chocolate and a coke zero and an ice cream for Maya for nix from my lovely friends, altho I did shout myself and Kellz a drink a wee bit later on. I only did BS and ACV rinses about once a week. A lot of people do find it can take their hair a while to adjust to not being washed by all the chemicals, up to 8 weeks of bad hair days. BUT if you stick it out it's worth it, my hair felt fabulous!!! It went all soft and B said it looked in great condition.

I know of very few people who have gone back to shampooing and those who have, like me, have only gone with SLS free product like the eco-store.

Nikki - I got a Mr Vintage tee a few weeks ago, the milkshake one ('the longest drink in town' with the giraffe). I love it!!

I use a couple of teaspoons of BS in a cup of water, swish it around until its dissolved, pour over in bits and rub through like I would with shampoo so it cleans scalp as well. I leave it in for a few minutes but thats just me. I dont use anything to condition but a lot of people use vinegar (apple cider like Gen said) as a rinse after the BS. I found my hair felt great after the first wash - real soft and shiny. I use a lot of product in my hair cos its short, and its coloured as well, but I find I only need to wash every 2-3 days (rinse in between days). I never heard of dissolving the powder first either. We use the liquid one - I can buy it at NW here, but I get it refilled at our health shop (saving plastic bottles, yay!).

Hmmm, good question! He did try to give me 1/2 as much grocery money as he usually does but I stamped my feet and made him cough up. Not sure why he's off today, they do get rostered one Saturday off a month but he usually ends up covering for someone else.

I can't say I've ever had a problem though, even un-dissolved, and the clothes come out really clean. Though we do have a front loader, so it doesn't half wash them to bits (2 hrs 47 mins for a cycle!) anyway I suppose!

I've beeen a very good girl - still using up shampoo and conditioner scraps out the cupboard. So far, this has kept me going all month without buying shampoo and conditioner!    Mind you, DH bought some for himself last weekend. $54 later ...

Today will be a big spend day - am picking up my car (turned up to pick it up yesterday and it still wasn't ready - they'd had to take the radiator out to fit the cam belt and bustd the radiator hose trying to put it back in!) and we're going out for dinner. Ginger - I went to Servilles for my last haircut, and figure it is justified as I only go every few months, so works out to just as much as Roland would spend on haircuts that are cheaper but more frequent. I say go for the quality !! We have just about everything ecostore (or similar) now. Love it all - except the oven cleaner, it only works if your oven is already clean and just needs a quick wipe (unlike mine ).
