Author: Katherine
Subject: 6775
Posted: 16 April 2007 at 5:28pm

When I was in labour, my doula used aromatherapy and homeopathic remedies, and I managed a drug-free natural childbirth. Here's what she used and why:

Arnica 30: Used 2-4 hourly during labour to prevent bruising and shock for the mother as well as the baby.

Clary sage: Mix 3 drops per 5ml teaspoon of carrier oil. Rub on abdomen and back as frequently as required during labour to reduce abdominal pains and get rid of backache. (Do NOT use for backache during pregnancy.) Not recommended if you are also using gas during labour.

Chamomilla: Great for when labour pains begin in the back and travel down the middle thighs.

Rescue Remedy: Two or three drops direct on the tongue, as often as necessary. Will help with shock, fear, panic, exhaustion and pain in a general way during labour. Alternate with arnica 30.

Calendula: Used to heal episiotomy or tearing, in lotion form -- one part calendula to twenty parts water, then soak a dressing in the lotion and place it against the wound, keeping the dressing damp.

Geranium: great for circulation and helps breathing.

Jasmine: anti-spasmodic and analgesic properties. Also very beneficial in a compress on the lower abdomen to help expel the placenta.

Lavender: antiseptic and excellent for aching backs and limbs. Recommended in a bath during the early stages and is wonderful for the healing of vaginal tears or episiotomy scars.

Neroli: helps combat any fear or apprehension.

Rose: uterine tonic which helps to regulate labour.

Ylang Ylang: very calming and helps lower the blood pressure.

Needless to say, she had a very cool "childbirth kit" with all this stuff in it! Hope that helps...
