Nurse, Nurse, Nurse
-The more your little one nurses, the more milk your body will create.
2. Pump After Nursing
-Even if you’re going to be a stay-at-home mom, pumping after nursing will help boost your production and give you some milk to have on hand if you want to take a nap or go out for a quick breather.
3. Check the Latch
Without a proper latch it’s impossible for baby to entirely drain your breast.
4. Switch Sides
-Make sure baby nurses from both breasts during each nursing session.
5. Lose the Binky
Any time that your baby spends sucking on a pacifier is time lost on stimulating your milk production.
6. Check in with a Lactation Consultant
7. Wear the Right Bra
8. Eat Oatmeal
-Oats are a milk-making miracle food.
9. Avoid Hormonal Birth Control
10. I hope some of you second time mummies can answer a wee breastfeeding question I have. Due to have number 2 in 9 weeks so the countdown is on!

With my first birth two days after the bf advisor realised that i hadnt yet started producing colostrum so my baby was starving, I was put on pumps and later that night the colostrum came in, I had to keep pumping and eventually two more days later the milk came in. I know its normal for milk to take a few days but i always thought thats what the colostrum was for to kind of "get them through" until the milk.

I have been told by a couple of friends to start expressing about 36 weeks just once a day jsut until i can see the colostrum just so what when bubs arrives he only needs to do a few sucks to start getting the reward....

What do you think? Have any of you done this or had similar situations? The nurses had to give my first born a milk substitute via a seringe on night 2 as he was needing something, I was devistated that his first feed wasnt from me so want to avoid having the "no colostrum" thing again this time.

And advice would be much appreciated xxxx

Hubby and I are going away this weekend overnight by ourselves - our first time since Caitlin was born last August. She's 9 and a half months now and I'm still breast feeding between solids, and have been expressing milk for her to have while we're away - which is only mid sat till mid sun. My mum (who's having her) suggested formula incase she runs out of milk. I'm on the sideline about this as she's not had formula before and I like her having my milk, but then I'm thinking would it be good for an emergency? And then Mum might encourage formula at other times when we visit her afterwards (she's always seemed to not like me exclusively breast feeding). Thoughts?

Caitlin has about 4-5 feeds per day, and so far I've expressed 3 lots of about 150ml/.

(sorry if I've posted this in the wrong topic)

Just reinforced for me how all babies are so different and I am doing what is right for my little boy. After not being successful with my first baby I can now say I have been feeding for almost 4 weeks now (first few days he was completely tube feed) and have been completely feeding myself for 3 weeks now! Not looking at giving up anytime soon either.

He also picked up on a slight heart condition but it hasn't been confirmed so won't know until Xmas/New Years what the haps is with that but had I not pushed her to see a paed and she does have this heart condition then she could have had serious heart conditions by the time she was 20.

I also wanted to say we are still, slowly BFing. DD goes about 2 weeks between feeds now but she'll ask, latch and unlatch quite upset saying no or if I offer she'll say no too but I allowed her to feed the other day and told her it was ok if she still wanted milkies etc and she seemed happier but I'm not sure whats happening as she's only interested now if I ask her to feed if that makes sense and I am not sure how comfortable I am asking her to feed when she used to be the one asking! But I know she is missing the comfort from BFing etc.

'You should look at night weaning her' 'She doesn't need to be BF on demand anymore, give her plenty of water during the day and cut the BFs down' - but then again she was kinda 'anchient' - maybe Late 50s/early 60s.

My Plunket nurse actually thought I was because Lily was gaining over a kg a month and was like 'Well I can see if you are exclusively BFing her if she's done a poo!' and proceeded to look in her nappy and exclaim 'Ah well yes breast fed!' *rolls eyes*. If I gave her a darn bottle why would I lie about it?

Tbh Max looks very healthy! Look at those hubby wrists! They're gorgeous! Lily's lost all that chubbyness now! I'll try find a picture!

Since Max is so young still we might have got different speeches. She started by congratulating me on still b/feeding, told me it was ok to bottle feed sometimes if i need a break, i told her i'd never given him a bottle, she said i shouldnt be ashamed to admit it (snap again, High9, i have been accused of formula feeding him on the sly...). In the end i got a bit shirty and pointed out i live alone and am a single parent so if i were to give him a bottle to give me 'a break' i'd be giving him the damn bottle anyway and then i'd have to wash it! Not much of a break IMO.

Anyway - we discussed demand feeding and i annoyed her by referring to it as feeding on request, then we discussed solids and i annoyed her by doing BLW and pointing out DS only eats little nibbles of things so isnt getting fat on solids, then she rather snippily said 'well mother knows best i suppose *fake laugh* but remember we'll always be here to help you with his eating when he's older'. Err...thanks?

High9 - Max is looking quite skinny as well, he weighed in at 11kg and 77cm tall. But here is a recent picture of him, he certainly isnt a big rolly thing.

That's NOT what they say at all. All they say is that at one particular point, this is the distribution of babies weight. Of course some babies are going to have growth spurts at different times so that they chop and change their positions in the chart. We see it in livestock all the time. He's in the 25th Percentile now. he is fully breastfeed but wondering if it's my milk supply or because he has reflux and is a spilly baby so not absorbing all he needs, went to the doc yesterday absolutely no help at all, rushed us in and out in 10 mins, wondering if I should persevere or give him a formula top up, we have no problems breastfeeding he can't latch on quick enough. Hoping someone might have some advice? thanks

Ive ahd a couple of comments regarding weaning since Im pregnant, but I will actively encourage her to keep feeding since I wanted to get to at least 2 years, and even 18 months seems so little to not be BFing her any more.
I would hate to look back a year/5 years/20 years and wish I had done what I wanted to instead of reverting to peer pressure. But regret is a big thing for me, so it makes me feel that way...

And I guess a lot of the people I know are BFers or even if tehy bottle fed then they dont really say much (although i do get some comments about your not going to let her feed till shes 4 right? I just say yep! she can come home at lunch time for a wee drink )
LLL locations, im not sure which (if any) are west auckland, but tehy have a few in auckland so there might be one close? Also they are on FB as are breastfeeding NZ which can give you some support too.
Do people who switch to bottle say things to you? link to some cool comebacks from when people say stupid stuff. I got a chuckle out of it anyway!
Just remember that your the normal one.. its totally normal to feed your baby with milk 100% designed for her, and you shouldnt feel out of place by it. I guess I fake it till I make it, in that I want others to see BFing as normal (which it is!) and feel that tehy arnt out of place, so if I feed any where and everywhere then hopefully it will enable someone else who is a little less confident to do so too

I expected to get a few funny looks considering im in the states and the only one other person Ive seen/heard about BFing did it in the parents room as she couldnt imagine feeding in public! but I didnt! I would just breastfeed and then if I had the time I'd try express maybe once a day to put some in the freezer as a reserve. It will also mean that as your twins go through growth spurts they'll be able to drink into your expressing supply (What i mean is that maybe for a few days you'd express and not get so much because they were eating more.)

Congrats on managing to breastfeed your twins. Breastfeeding is a difficult task and takes effort.

I have previously been feeding then topping up with EBM and expressing between feeds. However in the last couple of days I have not had the opportunity to express and as a consequence the twins are now fully feeding from the breast, should I try to express now and then to keep the milk up or continue with the new routine or the original routine? Its taken me 9 almost 10 weeks to get to the point where they will feel satisfied and settle off the breast alone.

We have absolutely turned a corner when it comes to feeding, since seeing the LC we have been feeding with next to no issues whatsoever (the odd pinch when latching but I guess that's normal). DD was weighed last Monday and had put on 460g in 8 days - the week before she had lost 20g but she is now back over her birth weight and I am so stoked that it was all Mumma milk Expressing for all those feeds was so worth it and so was persevering with the feeding! I actually look forward to spending the time feeding now rather than dreading the time and cringing/crying through it.

I'm so happy it's all worked out, thanks to my fabulous MW, my awesomely supportive DH who just kept saying 'try one more feed and see how it goes' knowing I didn't want to give up and letting me sit in bed doing lots of skin to skin and trying to feed while he took care of DS. And of course you lovely ladies who gave me hope that it would work out!!

Sorry for the long winded speech haha, I'm just so stoked that I am able to give DD what I believe is the best start to life

Thanks so much for the link though Wriggles, it might come in handy still once I get the hang of how to latch her.

I'm SO looking forward to my LC appt tomorrow!

Is it possible that my nipples could be too short to feed? Surely not given every person is different and wouldn't have the same shape or size nipples. I have been using shields since leaving hospital which of course are quite large so get into her mouth easily but when I tried this afternoon to get her to latch using that method, I didn't use the shields and it's like she couldn't even get anything into her mouth to suck.. ahh.. it's just so frustrating. I guess I'll just have to wait until tomorrow. At least my supply is going well and I'm easily getting 120mls for each feed so that can only grow when she starts feeding again.
