Hopefully it's not so bad that he can't hold one! And hopefully he grows out of them...don't know what the chances of that are?

Also - my Dad emailed Heinz about the lack of warning about the possibility of this kind of reaction on the tin of formula, they rang him and were really good about it (and he's also spoken to the food safety people or whoever it is that decides what needs warnings on it). Anyway, as an apology of sorts Heinz sent my sister a basket with lots of stuff in it; books, bowls, mugs, spoons, a cookbook, teddy bear...can't remember what else. Pretty good I thought

My sister gave him his first bottle of formula (coz she's going back to work soon and isn't having much luck expressing) and oddly enough it was the same one, the Heinz Gold one (a coincidence I'm sure). He came out in a rash all over and she rushed him to the hospital, he was unconcious by the time she got there. So apparently it's the protein that's in the cows milk and goats milk formula. Pretty scary! I'll direct her to ohbaby, sounds like lots of you guys have babies with allergies too.

As long as she is following a steady curve and not dropping it doesn't actually matter what her weight/height ratio.

They usually diagnose "fails to thrive" if bubs crosses 2 (poss 3?) percentile lines.

Maya was fails to thrive due to allergies, that was the spin off of my dairy-contaminated breast milk . She crossed from the 97th at birth to the 3rd at 9 mths. She's still only on the 50th for weight, and on the 97th for height so is tall and lean, but she's healthy and I guess that's just the way she was made despite the fact that her Dad and I are both solid to say the least.

I remember feeling like the worst mother in the world that I had caused it, and "fails to thrive" is such a horrible diagnosis, like it implies you've done something wrong, when in fact thats not the case.

ETA: If Ella was 5.52kg at 3 mths and 6.02kg a week or so ago at around 4 mths then that should be fine - she's still gaining around 100g a week

Big hugs - you have noooooo idea how much I feel for you and poor wee Ella!

Edited by Maya

Ella was 6.02kg at her last Plunket check a week ago. They didn't measure her though. Last time they did that was at 3 months, and she was 5.52kg and 62cm long. They weighed and measured her in hospital and I'm stuffed if I can remember the numbers (sooo got no proper sleep) but I could swear they said her length was 70-something... I remember thinking Crikey! But also, the nurse stretched Ella to measure her. And I could be wrong on the figure too. I think I'll pop into Plunket and have her measured and weighed before her next check, as it's 6 weeks before we see the dietician.

It's a mistake I've nearly made quite a few times

Briona had silent reflux and didn't like to feed to sleep - ever. The sucking action was great but sleeping on a full tummy was not. Tummy-sleeping is apparently good if their tummy is unsettled (to do with not stretching the intenstines? as much or something), but that's only helpful if your bubba is old enough for that (Briona wasn't). We ended up doing the controlled crying thing for Bria, it seemed to be the only other option after getting her a dummy. For starters, I would sing/rock/pat her to semi-sleep and then put her in the cot and continue all that stuff until she was asleep. Many long days and nights and I was so glad when the reflux "cured"!

Also, do you need to cut dairy from your diet if still bfing? pm me if you need any help with anything - am getting pretty good at dairy free diets

Please dont feel guilty (I know I did) as there was no way of you knowing and in some ways at least you know now, as scary as it was. Author: Andie
Subject: 5786
Posted: 19 February 2007 at 4:48pm

Ella's been off her last evening feed for the last 3 nights. She still needs it - she wakes in the wee small hours if she's missed it - she just refuses to take if from the breast. No probs with a bottle of EBM, but I only get a little expressed now, so can't see that working long term. Anyway, last night she again refused, so we got some sachets of formulas to try. Tried her on a Heinz gold one (not that I think the brand is to blame!), and after chopping it back like a trooper, she dozed off (which Ella doesn't do at the end of a feed), immediately came up in a red rash and hives, they went from her neck to all over, her neck swelled and she had trouble swallowing. She threw up (thank God) and seemed to breathe easier after that but before the ambulance had arrived she'd started getting wheezy breathing. She was given steroids at A&E and steadily came right overnight.

Our little girl is fine now - apart from some marks leftover on her skin from it all she's back to her normal self, and we came home this avo. What scared me the most was the breathing trouble, swollen neck, and hearing her wee voice all strained and croaky because she couldn't quite get it all out. I wouldn't want any parent to go through that, and I sooooo wish I'd taken that 'before using this for the first time, consult your healthcare provider' note on the pack seriously. OK, so we have no family history of food allergies, but crikey the poor girl's made up for that. And I know no-one expects anaphylactic shock, but it can happen. Ella now needs an epi-pen prescribed but is too little for the smallest dose, so we have to be hyper-vigilant until she's 10kg. She'll have RAST test done when she's a year old, and if that comes back OK for milk by then, they want to have her try some on her skin, but only in the hospital. We seriously didn't see this coming. So if you're considering trying a formula out, please try it some way other than a full feed's worth for the first time. Maybe just a little amount, or mix some up and put it on the inside of baby's elbow or something. But while I still think it's a fantastic invention, be careful that first time.
