Author: JuniorO
Subject: 42933
Posted: 04 October 2013 at 11:20am

Hey girls, thought I'd pop in and say hi and give an update... not great news unfortunately.

Had gone to Doc a couple of months back, just to talk about TTC and she was really great and suggested just getting all the fertility tests just so that if we needed a referral to a Fertility Clinic then we'd be ready. Seriously didn't think we'd need them but I like to be organised so agreed to it.

FYI, tests are sperm test for him, STD blood tests for both (incl HIV), smear test for her, ovulation test for her (on day 2-4 of cycle and day 20-22 of cycle) and rubella immunization test for her.

Rang Docs to check on test results and were told that we had to go in. It turns out my ovulation test was negative That was a tough afternoon with lots of tears and emotions.

That was a few days ago and I've now been able to come to terms with it. I know it's not the end of the world and there are so many women who have fertility problems (I just didn't want to be one of them!). Anyway, now that 'grieving' is over, I'm all into action...

1. Getting 2nd blood test just to check

2. on a mission to lose weight as I have BMI of 31.7 and you have to have BMI of "less than 32" to be eligible! Joined a Spring into Summer 8 week challenge at a gym. Logging food intake with MyFitnessPal, got support of hubby and family, buddying up with my bestie who lives in Wellington (our motivation: 'prize' for first to lose 10kg is a visit from the other, and 'prize' for both losing 15kg is a pampering weekend together in Taupo - so good reason to motivate the other!)

3. bought ovulation prediction kit from Baby Works as recommended on here

4. have booked in appt with Fertility Clinic (Doc appt was Tuesday, Fertility + rang me today - pretty quick!). Was told public waiting was 8-12wks but private appt was only $150 so made appt for 11 Nov, so glad to have a date.

5. doing lots of research and staying positive. Have learnt that
- 10% of ovulating women will not get positive ovulation tests
- with drugs 80% of non-ovulating women successfully conceive
- friends with babies was non-ovulating and took drugs

Anyway, my advice to anyone TTC is to visit your Doctor asap and ask for fertility tests. The sooner you know if there's an obvious problem or not, the better.

And stay positive. I'm determined not to make this about having sex with my husband just to make babies

Came off it over a year ago and had no clue about ov etc! Actively trying since January with no luck... I have pcos. Went to the Dr and had a test to see if I had ov and I had but Dr still advised me to go to Fertility Associates. Only using the OPK at this stage, and have just bought the digital one.. expensive but worth it. Find the red lines just too hard to read. My DH is not worried about it and just thinks it will happen when it happens (argh!)... He is very against getting himself tested so everything is falling back to me at the moment.

Also I hadn't planned on telling many ppl that we are trying, but have told my mother and sister, and wow the reaction hasn't been quite what I thought from my sister.... now whenever we talk all I hear from her is don't be one of those woman that get obsessed, just don't become one of those! and yet funny enough she's got kids and didn't have any issues... much easier to go on these forums to read and chat with people who are going through the same thing! I started charting to have information there if I needed to get help for fertility. Also, it is very stressful when TTCing. You may be fine but it had a huge affect on us. It became a chore - something we HAD to do whether we liked it or not. Now, I use OPK's and temps to get a closer idea of ov day, so that we only need to BD twice that week. I have conceived twice before using this method, so it works for us. We did lose both babies, but it still worked for conception and when we are TTCing again, I will use this method again.

    Author: a.girl
Subject: 42933
Posted: 13 August 2013 at 5:04pm

Good question JuniorO! I've wondered that myself a few times. The every second day thing does cover it, so why am I tracking temps, opks, etc??? The main reason I do those things is it's helping me understand my cycles better so that (touch wood!) if there is a problem, I'll have lots of cycle history to help figure that out. For example, my last chart showed I Ovulated (good to confirm with temp as OPK's don't actually confirm it). Also, it showed how long my LP was - which could be helpful if it's too short. A few months down the road, if things still aren't happening, I can go to the doctor's with a starting point rather than waiting a few cycles to figure that out what's been happening. Long story short... the more you know about what your body's doing, the easier it will be if things don't happen as quickly as you had planned.

I also found with the temping that it helped me this cycle when I had a funny spotting-like AF. I knew straight away it was AF rather than implantation because my temp dropped and stayed down. This took some stress off of me during that "up in the air" time.

But it's up to you. I can see how some people would rather not have the stress, but I'm a very scientific person and like to understand things. To each his own!

Is there any point in putting so much time and effort into finding out exactly when you're ovulating? I mean, we have a rough idea right... so why not just make sure you have sex at least every second day throughout the middle two weeks? And maybe at least every 3-4 days at other times? My Doctor told me that Fertility Clinic says 2x week during ovulation is enough anyway?!

Or do you have sex more than every 2days when you're ovulating? If so, how often?

I don't mean to offend anyone, I genuinely want to know if it is worth the effort? And does it add extra stress and/or take away any fun related to making love to your partner?

Thanks :)

At the beginning of this year I had no idea what TTC or TWW or BDing was! My hub and I are now 2 months into TTC. I've only got one ovary + one tube so I am hoping it doesn't take too long + that my remaining vital organs are all working as they should. It's funny, I kind of thought it might happen straight away, so I've quickly descended into googling every little tweak or cramp. Expecting AF (haha another acronym) this weekend. I don't FEEL different at all this month + have none of the symptoms described by others. Ah well, another month will come around - and this time I might grab some ovulating tests to be sure I'm timing it right!

It's kind of nice that this forum exists - such a sweet community of women. Love + encouragement to all of you!

Considering it took me over a year from my first trip to the doctor to get him to do the test as it was and its only been about 6mths from initial diagnosis to nearly topping the list I wish we'd got that done earlier. But can't change that now can only share my experience with others.
All the best to you :)

Especially if you haven't been that careful in the past like us. I was on no birth control & we were using the withdrawal method for years before we married. It doesnt hurt them & its completely non invasive, at least then you will have a better idea where you stand. We found out about 2 years into our marriage that we had a 1% chance of natural conception. Hubby has a very low count & motility, had we known this earlier, we probably would have lined up for IVF sooner. Thankfully ours was bought forward from 15 months to 10. We were prepared to pay if it was 15 months no doubt. He would have nearly been 40 by then.

We used the OPKs this month, and I also get cramping around ovulation. Using Fertility friend to track ovulation, so hopefully all this will work!
