Her upper lip was very tight and dentist said he thought it was 90% of my problem with her feeding. He also released her tongue too. Before we had it done she fed on and off all day and I could never get her to go more than two hours between feeds. She often gulped and choked, came on and off the breast all the time and had a lot of reflux. Since having her lip and tongue done she now feeds between 3 and 4 hourly, sleeps longer in the day and latches well. I got a referral to a lactation consultant through Plunket. Fortunately the LC had excellent knowledge of tongue ties.

It was an LC that diagnosed my son with a tongue-tie and five days previously Midwives hadn't picked it up at all.

The only LC that I know who is pretty good is Joan from the Plunket Family Centre in Henderson. I have met others but I'm just not sure where they are based. I'm sure others can suggest other LC's though but if cost is an issue, then just make sure you book in with a Lactation Consultant at your local Plunket Family Centre. To be honest, I wouldn't necessarily rely on a GP opinion. A LC is specialized in this area. Some of them are also associated with La Leche League if that helps...

Both the LT and the TT could be causing you nipple trauma resulting in ongoing thrush infection.
I'm not in Auckland but some of my due date group is and they have good things to say about an LC- Joan I think- at a Plunket Family Centre who knows how to look for tricky tongue ties.

    Author: 1st_Time_Preggies
Subject: 42864
Posted: 12 December 2012 at 7:54pm

Help! DD is just over 5 months now, and I am still struggling on and off with what I *think* is nipple thrush. It started after a bout of mastitis when she was a month old, and I went on antibiotics. There is pain in my nipple and if it is really bad it hurts when she feeds. DD has no symptoms whatsoever, and neither do I. I wash all my bras etc in hot water separately, have been given numerous creams, and I just can't seem to get rid of it :-( My doc is very reluctant to prescribe flucozonole, which my LC at the time suggested was the best solution.

DS definitely has a lip tie, but did not appear to have a tongue tie (can stick it out etc). However I read somewhere that something like 98% of babies with lip tie have tongue tie, and my Plunket Nurse suggested I get the tongue tie checked out again as it may be hidden. She also said it can either mimic thrush symptoms or cause thrush.

Anyone else experienced this? Can anyone recommend a good doc and or LC or someone in Auckland to help properly diagnose thrush and possible tongue tie???
