Fingers crossed for this next cycle with the increased dose x. I went up to 150mg in the end, but I didn't ovulate at all on the lower doses. Bear in mind that clomid can decrease your lining too, so something to bear in mind (doing a few clomid cycles at higher doses is probably fine, but I wouldn't be keen on doing it for 6 months on end without scans to check your lining is okay for implantation). Just make sure you continue to take the tablets before bed and you should sleep through most of the side effects .

AFM, we were finally able to do a transfer after more than 3 months of jabs early November and got our BFP. But it's been a massive roller-coaster since, with a threatened miscarriage and probable loss of a twin. I'm still on tenterhooks, and not out of the woods yet, my progesterone is far too low, despite all the supplements - so I need it to go up up up. But my hcg is doing exactly what it should be. So we're just trying to take one day at a time and hanging out for the 7 week scan.

The nurse said that this meant I'd ovulated, but that it is low and they would be hoping for 30-40 given I was taking clomid. She will take the results to the Dr but she said she thought he'd probably recommend that we doubled my dose (I'm currently on one tablet - 100mg I think?). I should hear back from them before Friday to see what they'd like to do, and to arrange a new script if necessary.

I'm disappointed the results aren't better, but at least I ovulated, and around the right time, which gives us a better shot this month than we have in any other given month.

If I don't get a BFP this month, I actually think my DH will be pretty stoked that we get to try again next month

You have legal rights as their guardians but you don't get a new birth certificate etc like with adoption. Sometimes the birth parents will have visiting rights and I think they are usually also listed as guardians but without rights? Home for Life kids can be all ages though but there are a lot more children available through HFL than adoption. There are lots of things to think about though, in terms of the effects birth mum's drug/alcohol intake while pregnant could have, and perhaps the environment they have been in since birth.

My mum was adopted, so I guess perhaps it is more normalised for me? We haven't done any of the information sessions or anything, so I'm still not sure if we will actually go there, but it is certainly an option anyway.

Thanks Ceres. And yup, took my first pill last night and so far no nasty side effects. I'm guessing the hormonal thing might take a few days. I'm on 50mg, so hopefully don't get any!

Speaking of AMH, I had my blood test a few weeks ago for that, how long do the results take? I wonder if I should call FA to the results?

I hope that you have success with it too, bring it eh! What dose are you on? I'm sure you've read elsewhere, but a good idea to take the tab at night so you sleep through any side effects. (I didn't get side effects until I was on 150mg from memory, so you might get away scott free anyway).

Going Crazy, it is really frustrating hearing over, and over, and over, again that people have fallen without trying, or are on to 'x' child in the time you've been trying. Get it completely. I tell myself that my DD is the MOST precious thing in the world - and if we hadn't had that wait it wouldn't have been her. Telling myself that this time too, the baby we have will be worth the wait and then some. It helps, some. We're not ready to put a time frame on it yet. But we do have plans in place, if this FET doesn't work then we'll do another with our last embie. If that doesn't work we'll look at doing one more privately funded cycle. Then we have a public funded IVF due in a couple of years. My big worry is my AMH is not good at all, so with each month we don't get pregnant the chance of IVF even helping reduces further. It's a tough one all right. But I see myself with more than one, so we will do everything in our power to make that happen. Ariel, I think it's awesome you're looking at HFL and adoption. Good on you.

I think I've managed to convince DH to have the SA done and do the initial appointment with FA to see where things go from here. If the Dr says we have a three year wait til we can get on the public waitlist (which from what you are saying above might be the case), then we'll re-evaluate our options. At this stage we definitely can't afford IVF, maybe if I went back to work full-time we could. The AMH test sounds like a good idea too - I saw in a forum somewhere else someone say you can always earn more money but you can't turn back time.

One nice thing that happened today, a close friend from high school told me she is 13 weeks pregnant with her first and I was immediately very happy for her - I am a little sad for me of course, but mostly happy and excited for her which is great, because I sometimes worry if I'll just become a bitter horrible person who can't be happy for anyone else who gets pregnant.

And yes, second that luck for your BT tomorrow - bring on a BFP! (no pressure! )

    Author: Ceres
Subject: 41705
Posted: 26 September 2012 at 7:36pm

Ariel,

I know exactly where you are right now, having been there ourselves, it sucks. First, it is really important to know that you conceived DD naturally, - that is HUGE. It means everything. Like your DH, my DH had a SA done in 2010 before we conceived DD that showed very subpar parameters - we were due to start IVF with ICSI in December 2010. But with ovary drilling, clomid, and progesterone, we DID fall pregnant on our own. So that shows that even with subpar swimmers - it can happen.

In saying that, I DO think it's worth having a repeat SA done - because numbers can change drastically (in either direction) over time, and you do need to know what's going on (i.e., the shock we got with the SA done earlier in the year for DH) and know that your DH probably can improve parameters as well, we did CoQ10 (150mg daily) + menevit with DH and his numbers improved massively before we did IVF.

The other thing that I'd be tempted to say is really important for you is an AMH test. That's the test that gives an idea of what your ovarian reserve is like. That tells you if you have time on your hands with public funding.

Finally, your IVF scoring is done from the time you started trying to conceive - so it doesn't actually matter when that appointment where the scoring is done is. I was told that the earliest time they allow you to state you started trying is 3 months post-partum - so in our case it would be May 2011. Our scoring, based on severe ovulatory problems, and MFI, would mean we would automatically qualify for the public wait list if we were child-free. Because we have a child living at home, we don't get enough points to go on the list until we have been trying for three years (i.e., would qualify for 'the list' in May 2014). Then there is the wait from there of approx a year in Auckland. What I'm getting at is, even if you do wait for a public funded appointment, it shouldn't affect your scoring or wait time. What you need to decide is whether you're okay with the public funding wait, and that might be influenced by your AMH number (or not, hopefully), and also the gap you wanted between children. To give you an idea, our IVF cycle with ICSI, where I needed the highest possible drug dose, and was a slow responder (so needed extra drugs again) cost approx $13k. It is a lot of money I know :|.

It's such a huge amount to process, and it really really sucks. I'm so sorry you're having to face this. I can't see why FA wouldn't do a payment scheme though, that seems really reasonable to me. As an FYI, an AMH test costs around $50-60. Sending big virtual hugs x.

Good luck with your BT tomorrow bugbug, will be thinking of you!

    Author: ArielAngel
Subject: 41705
Posted: 26 September 2012 at 1:17pm

Have had a bit of an emotional morning .

First up, a nurse from FA calls and says some of DH's results have come through and the Dr has asked for DH to have one of their more indepth SA done before our next appointment - at a cost of $140. I balk at the cost, knowing that DH won't be impressed. I txt him to let him know and that an email with more info will get sent through. He calls me later and says he's not keen on spending that money, especially on top of the $250 for our appointment next week - he says he will call FA and have more of a chat about why they want him to do another test.

He calls back later - basically he spoke to a lab/testing guy who said that given the results of the indepth SA he had two years ago, he felt our only option really would be IVF or IVF/ICSI at a cost of $12-$16k. This guy also didn't know why DH would have to test again, given his previously poor results - unless something in his most recent test indicated that his result would be significantly worse or better. DH is now asking whether there is any point in going ahead with the appointment just to find out that our only option of treatment is thousands of dollars and that we might not qualify for public funding. He is leaning towards asking for a referral to the hospital gynae, then seeing them and getting them to put through a public referral to FA which won't cost us anything - even though this will take six months plus (according to the Dr at Family Planning).

It's frustrating because I'm at work and there aren't any private areas so obviously can't call FA and have a discussion with them about it to find out if something in DHs most recent results prompted the request for a more indepth SA.

I feel like we should just get the test done and then have our appointment so we can at least get scored for public funding and find out what our options are - if we don't have the test I don't think there is any point in having the appointment as he might not want to make any decision until DH has had the further test and then we'll just be up for another appointment fee in the future. I want to call FA and find out if we can start paying $50 a week towards our appointments and tests etc, but again, can't do this from work.

I'm just feeling sick to the stomach that we'll have to wait six months to do anything - another of my birthdays will pass, friends will have had their babies and other friends will be pregnant, and I'll still be waiting...

When do you test?

Ariel, re your appointment tomorrow. They can most certainly do an internal when you've got AF, I've had it done a couple of times. I was apprehensive but I think the doctors are so normalised to checking things out at various times during the cycle that they honestly don't see it as an issue at all. So don't let that put you off. And if you're to go on clomid, you could start day 3, so I'd be reallllly reluctant to let this cycle go by without that appointment. I get the difficulty with DD though, I hope someone ends up being able to watch her for you x.

AFM, BT did finally show down regulation, so I started estrogen about 10 days ago and have a scan today to see how my lining has grown to see about scheduling the pipelle.

I think I'll see how we all feel tomorrow morning - I'm hoping 24 hours notice is enough to cancel an appointment.
I'd be very very surprised if the spec was reluctant to put you on clomid given your history of very long cycles and PCOS. I'd definitely fight for it, or metformin. I, personally, believe metformin can do magical things for PCOS; regulates your cycle to get you ovulating regularly on your own with a more normal cycle length, regulates blood sugars so energy levels are better, and lowers miscarriage risk too. I'd be asking whether it's an appropriate thing to go on to first if he doesn't want you to go on clomid immediately. And if it's combo'd with clomid then you're getting best of both worlds.

AFM, another BT yesterday and still not down regulated. So another week of jabs and a repeat BT.

It's on the 25th of September (it was a week earlier but I had to push it out to make sure we had all our test results in before the appointment).

If I have a 40-ish day cycle (like I've been having), then the appointment is CD35 which means if we can get the go ahead to do clomid then we can start the following cycle! We have John Hutton though, which from some research on the forums here at OB, seems he doesn't like to rush things, so he might very well tell us to keep trying another few cycles before we do any treatment.

I'm looking forward to having at least some kind of plan - hoping it's not wait and see though - that would be so frustrating!

Of course, if they really wanted to get rid of you they would just make something up.

You still qualify for paid parental leave though, after being in a job for six months - so if this cycle is successful (fingers crossed!) at least you'll still get that.

The new job will hopefully keep you busy too, which will be a nice distraction!

And yes, totally understand the uncertainty - I had hoped to be well pregnant again by now and to a certain extent planned my life around that. I think we could afford $295 a month for a few months.

I know what you mean about the sneaky clomid cycles - have considered doing this myself but as I haven't taken clomid before I figure it's probably best to do some monitored cycles first to make sure I'm on the right dose and not overstimulating or anything else.

Tiny bit of pink spotting late last night and this morning. So frustrating, just wish AF would start properly so I could get moving!

Stink they didn't offer the laproscopy previously but at least you can get moving on that now.

It's a hard decision to stop trying, and I hope that you get another BFP before you have to make it. DH and I have agreed we'll keep trying until I'm 40, but sometimes I think I'll have a mental breakdown if it takes that long (I'm 31). I think I would give up conceiving myself well before then, and go for Homes for Life or Adoption to give DD a sibling - would either of those be an option for you?

As for me, I have had some brown spotting the last two days, but not sure when I should start CD1 from - I assumed it was the first day I wake up with red bleeding, is this what you guys would do? It doesn't usually matter but I have a CD2 blood test to do this cycle.

Also, I was wondering how much we would looking at paying for an unmonitored Clomid cycle or a monitored one? Might ask this in the CPP thread too. Would be nice to know approximate costs so I can prepare DH before our FA appointment.

The doctor at Family Planning was so lovely, was there for over half an hour. She really won't do anything other than give me blood test forms and refer me to FA, and while I was hoping she might prescribe clomid for me, she was really nice and has given me lots of blood test forms. Just need to send DH in so they can give him his forms for testing (she wasn't keen on giving them to me).

Once she receives my medical records/previous test results from the hospital she has said she will put through a private referral to FA - apparently to get a public referral (and therefore free) she would have to refer me to the hospital first and an appointment there would be at least six months away.

Funnily enough, I'm actually looking forward to doing serial day 21 Progesterone tests - every five days from CD21 - will be nice to see if we can catch evidence of ovulation at some point.

That sucks bugbug that it was on the blocked side again, at least they let you swap out for a clomid only cycle - I have my fingers crossed that next month is the one for you!

And frankie, I don't mind if you still post in here - it's nice to see a success story! Have you had your twelve week scan yet?

Ceres, sucky that your body isn't doing it's thing - I hope that the scan can maybe give you some answers and you can get onto that FET.

The doctor thought that my being sick during the transfer/2WW *could* have affected things, but of course it's impossible to say with any certainty. We are looking at doing a pipelle (injury to endometrium) a month before we do a FET as evidence is coming out that it increases the odds of implantation by something like 2.5. Which is interesting, last time I got pregnant was the month following a lap - and anecdotally you do hear lots of women getting pregnant the month after some procedure. Now we just need to figure out the timing.

Sounds like a good plan with BDing every second day. Do you think you'd consider metformin? I know for me that turned me from totally anovulatory PCOS to 21 day cycles (still a massive problem in the form of a 7 day luteal phase, but an improvement none the less). I know at least two other previously anovulatory PCOS ladies who have started ovulating on their own with metformin. I personally think it's a pretty helpful drug. (You can't take it whilst BFing, but now it would be an option?)

Not that I find them that bad. The dr was really really lovely though, had DD with me and she was fine with her just playing around and getting into drawers etc.

I'm not even sure what CD I'm on now though. Even though I don't have the "mood" for it, I'm considering trying to BD every day from CD13 to CD30 so that if I ovulate like a "normal" person, then I should hopefully catch it (I think I worked out I ovulated on CD26 with DD). I know the advice is every second day, but I also know that the first cycle after weaning can be a good fertile one and I guess I'd like to make the most of it.

I feel for you badly. What a stupid system that forces you to essentially waste your time (and public money) when you know you're better off waiting for the follies to be on the correct side. Sigh. I'm sending lots and lots of luck for a miracle anyway x.

Hoping AF played ball Ariel and you got to have your smear done. I have heard so many stories of weaning and then a BFP the next month. Crossing fingers for you!

As for us, it didn't work. BFN. Have spent the weekend processing it. It isn't easy. We have our review on Tuesday to see where to from here. I can't help but think being so ill at embryo transfer time, and for the 2WW, can't have helped our chances (I had some nasty virus, knocked me for six!). Will be querying that too.

FA need it for their files apparently (it's been just on 3 years)
had transfer today - all went super-well ... i'm just not holding out much hope. it seems backwards when the govt gives me funding due to having a blocked tube, but then they implant me over and ovr again when everything is on blocked side. anyway thats my rant...

Good luck for your transfer tomorrow anyway.

As for me, just ticking away really - can't tell you exactly what CD I am (maybe CD7?) - just waiting for the final stages of AF to finish so I can hopefully have my smear on Friday. It was due a few months ago but then I had that massively long cycle so wanted to wait for AF again, so finally getting it done now. Otherwise, I'm just hoping that maybe we get a miracle this month being the first cycle since I weaned.

Hope time goes really fast for you and next month is the left side, I still can't fathom why they go ahead with the IUI's on the blocked side, stupid public health system!

That's great you have an appointment Ariel, hopefully you won't need it (cos you get a nice surprise in the meantime!). It's great that you and DH have got some other plans on the go too, always good to have other stuff in life to look forward to/aim toward I reckon. Sorry to hear you're still having rough nights with your DD.

Mel I love the name Riley too, thinking of you x

Ceres wishing away the days so that you get your results soon, so hoping for a BFP for you!

Not much happening for me, I've got my NT scan booked for the 3rd of August, so hanging out for that!

We had been talking about me maybe going back to work so we can buy a nicer house, but have decided that if we get pregnant it will be too hard, so for now we'll have a sideways move house wise (which means somewhere a bit more run-down but with a bigger section and a garage).

Phew, sorry for the novel about me!

Frankie, yay for being over two thirds of the way to 12 weeks!

MelW - hope you are ok, love the name Riley also.
