I have found it pretty difficult. I've been riding a over the summer when I can give the kids to Mum and Dad for a few hours and go. However, nothing consistent (well, consistent for a few weeks and then *something* always happens) and she will be turned out over the winter (as she was last winter). Had big plans of casually going to a few hunts last winter but did not eventuate at all. The result is that my horse is now 7 years old and still green and has done nothing! Luckily she is the kind of horse that you can just get on after a year of doing nothing but I still feel very guilty. I entertain thoughts of selling her but to get any money for her (unless I want to sell her very cheaply) she needs to have done some work - work that I don't have time to give her. Argh. Hard.

I just sold my mare after I munted my wrist, horses and kids I can manage but not horses, kids, and injury. I was riding in weekends and between 6-7, just weekends in winter. Yeah, it was certinally easier to get the horses in full work before kids (I had 6 in work then, you would think 1 inwork post kids should be a piece of cake!!).

I also always have to ride by myself (well nearly) or not at all, so generally I try to go when the kids are settled into playing around somewhere or when they were asleep (when they were smaller). Nowdays I figure that even 10 minutes is better than nothing, especially for a young horse....

Recently I have brought a couple of little ponies for my boys, I think this may be the next stage, and it is heaps of fun, cant wait for the shows!!! It really makes me so proud and excited watching my 4 year old riding his own pony all around the paddock, roads etc!! I try my best but riding is very much an occasional thing now. The young horse I bred and broke in is for sale as I just dont have time and my hunter is ridden maybe twice a week at most. I do have the issue of being a single mum tho so noone to help with childminding and work 40 hours a week. I ride when A is napping, or over summer once he is in bed in the evening. I have an arena also so can nip out knowing I am only metres from the house should he need me. Once I've sold one horse I intend to buy A a pony so at least in a year or two he can ride along with me... I don't! I don;t have family here, and DH is busy in the evenings, so my dressage horse has done practically nothing in the last few years, and my young horse I have broken in, but I haven't done anything with her. I am reluctant to put myself in a position of being injured by working her when there is nobody around. But if I was more motivated (or less lazy) I would get up at 6am and ride while children are asleep and DH is here (we have an arena here).

The other thing I thought I ought to do would be to find someone who would like to trade grazing for childminding.

If it was just my toddler I would be okay with working a sensible horse while he played quietly within sight in the yard - yeah right . Or maybe, just maybe, riding while he was asleep in the afternoons and I had the monitor with me. But a baby is a different matter!

Actually I probably wouldn't ride a young horse with nobody else around anyway. Which is why I haven't. just wondering if theres any horsey mums on here... Wanted to ask how do you juggle a child and your riding? My daughter is 13 months and my horse is just about to come home after been broken in but I dont know how Im going to juggle riding her and looking after Caitlyn. I work part time 7 days on then 7 days off in the afternoons.
