I tried to wean overnight at 6mths in an effort to get my fertility back and because Plunket told me he didn't need feeding overnight at that age, but it didn't work... We did it at 1yr and it was relatively easy then. I found that DS always wanted a feed when I went in and it was really difficult to settle him without it because he knew it was there! DP did the night settling for a week and that was enough to break the habit. It wasn't much fun listening to him try to settle him but it did the trick and after that week DS wouldn't even ask for a feed when I'd go in to settle him. Settling does take longer than just feeding back to sleep but we mostly have him sleeping through the night now (except for illness, teeth, etc etc!).

ETA: The feed before bed was the last to go, we weaned overnight (and during the day) at about 1yr old and continued to feed before bed at night for another 3-4 weeks, then dropped that one and it wasn't even missed!

Edited by Jaune

Although I think it would be nice to not be "tied" to DD so much, I know I'll be sad when I won't have that one special thing any more.

I'm working on night weaning but it's not going so well - it was easy enough to cut down to just one night feed (with just cuddles at any other wake-ups) but trying to cut out that last feed is resulting in numerous wake-ups, each of which requires feeding to go back to sleep (and I'm not so keen on being awake 2-3hours a night while I try to just settle her back to sleep when I know with feeding she'll be back asleep within ten minutes (and so will I!)).

Been the same for 3 nights now. So, no feeds for over 80hrs,...my boobs are not in the slightest bit full or sore either- I guess cos the weaning was sooo gradual.
Feel happier about it that it hasnt been hard on him, cos we didnt wanna wean cos we thought he would be screaming for it and we didnt want that, but hes been fine. Yay- bring on bfp for us now please!

Plus Im really not enjoying that first feed of the day because of all the pulling/twisting/pinching my other nipple gets while hes feeding.
Today was Day 1, and DH got Aiden up, but instead of putting him in bed with me to feed he took him out for a walk. DS ate a banana on the way and was happy as. Had breaskfast when they got back and woke me up at 7am, yay for a sleep in, lol. Dont know what we can do about the early rising, our day starts at 5.15am, and usually DS feeds in bed with me til 6am then we get up, but I spend that hole time trying to stop his hand from grabbing at my nipple and its not fun at all. Now we gonna have to get up at that time tho instead of being in bed! I had a shower as soon as I got, and got dressed, cos if I stayed in my pj's I know DS would have been wanting to feed, but now hes not even asked, since Im dressed and he doesnt usually ever feed or hardly ever ask for bf in the day now.

DS is 22 months and bf first thing in the morning-like 5.30am *yawn*, and last thing before bed at night-6.30pm. We night weaned him just before his first birthday, and thats when I got AF back. HE gradually dropped the day feeds, but now if he wants it I distract him cos I was sick of him wanting to latch on and off all day and not really feed.
So its only twice a day, but dont know how to drop them, and dont want to stop either- if I was preg I wouldnt even be thinking about weaning.

Sleeping through now that I'm not feeding overnight...and I thought he really needed the overnight feed too. And the funny thing is, even if he doesn't have a massive dinner (like last night, hardly ate anything) he still sleeps through. My sister said their digestive systems change, they're not little babies anymore than need regular feeding overnight, and they're not growing as quickly.
We still have 1 feed before bed but I don't think there is actually much in there anymore, I think it's more about comfort.
With the day ones I did don't offer, don't refuse but found that he was always asking, so I used a method suggested by someone in my due in thread. 1st time he asked I offered water, second time he asked I offered milk in a cup, 3rd time he got the boob...but he was usually happy with the other options and we never got to the boob.
Overnight was a bit harder - I had DP go in for all night wake-ups for a week and that was enough to break the habit. He doesn't even ask for milk now on the odd time he does wake up in the night.

I have heard that it's harder to wean after 15/16mths because their memory is more developed.

There's some people that can just give their kid a cup or bottle of milk and that's it, and others who fight for the boob (mine's like that). I cut it down to once a day very gradually by setting 'rules' about where bf happened (on the couch, at bedtime, in bed) then gradually changing them. It certainly took a few months to get from don't offer don't refuse to where we are now. I think I dropped a feed a week. The daytime ones were the easiest (if you want to call it that) to drop since when mine asked I could just distract her. The night ones took a few weeks of back rubbing, drinks of water and crying while I hugged her (usually not crying for more than 5 minutes), but after those few weeks she started sleeping through! I was totally convinced she needed the night time feeds because she was hungry, but after taking them away she got over it. We're still at once a day (AF came back a few weeks after I got rid of the 1,3,5am feeds) before bed.

Edited by Bky

Congrats to twotravelbugs on your BFP!

I tried charting, but as I was often anovulatory (sp?) I never really got to see a pattern and just gave up. I think I did it for three/four months.

Took us 18 months to conceive our bubs too Nutella. Although I fully expect it to take at least that long this time around I really do wish that it wouldn’t take that long. There is already one girl in my coffee group who is pregnant and everyone is wondering/asking who will be next – wish it could be me and kinda sucks that I quite possibly will watch them all get pregnant before me.

But on a positive note, I was watching DH with DD today at her swimming lesson, and my heart was just bursting and I think she is just so wonderful and I am blessed to even have just one baby so I think, if we couldn’t have any more, that I would be ok.
I found that I could tell within a few days (at least 3-4) what was up, but then I had charted before. Everyone's temps will be slightly different, but for me anything under 36.4C for 3-4 days in a row meant ovulation was coming. Anything over 36.6 for more than 3-4 days in a row meant ovulation had happened. When I was not ovulating my temp would bounce around in both ranges, never staying on one side for more than 3 days in a row.

I don't want to wean her to conceive but we'd really like to have another (well, most days we feel that way!). We had a hard time conceiving DD and eventually I got a BFP after doing IUI. So since she was 6 mths old we've been "not trying not preventing". I had a light bleed for 2 days last week, but it was mostly just brown clots and the odd smear of brown blood (sorry TMI!) so I'm not sure if it was AF making her return or not.

Has anyone charted before AF returned to work out if they are ovulating or not? The other thing you can do is keep an eye on your cervical mucus. In short wet= more fertile. There's a fantastic book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It's not specifically about TTC while BF, more TTC and fertility awareness, but it does have really helpful information if you are curious.

I temped for a long time when I was anovulatory and breastfeeding (versus now where I have ovulated and I'm waiting to do so again) and I can definitely tell the difference. For one, when I was anovulatory my temperatures were erratic. They never stayed in the same range (either high or low) for more than 3-4 days. By range I mean within 0.1-0.2 degrees C of each other. Now (pre ovulation) they are consistently low.
Other tips, well the guidelines for doing BBT say that you should have gotten 2-3+ hours of uninterrupted sleep before taking your temperature. However, when you're dealing with a small person who wakes through the night the realities of that are tricky. I find personally that if I don't actually get up and walk around my temperature doesn't change, and that getting up makes your temperature go up.

Short answer is, it can.
Long answer is some women find that they have short luteal phases if they are breastfeeding which can affect things. There's also the chance that you'd be transitioning to full fertility. So you may have had an anovulatory cycle. Chances are your fertility is probably back, though your cycles might be irregular. Best way to check is probably to temperature chart.

I finally got mine back too. So now really TTC and still BF.

    Author: Bky
Subject: 40808
Posted: 26 October 2011 at 11:04am

I feel much the same way. We're hoping that a sibling would hopefully be of more long term benefit than continued breastfeeding. Our age is a factor here as well. Stopping has proved to be fairly difficult as I have a non-bottle taking, non-milk drinking child. I've been scaling back BF since around 10 months (and off birth control since 6) with the idea that I could cut back to some point and get my fertility come back. Alas, now nearly at 16 months, down to twice a day (now that night weaning is sort of figured out. Now losing even more sleep, great. ) and still a whole lot of nothing. So as of right now ovulation has 2 more weeks to show up before we're all the way done. Next week is no more morning feed, and the week after the bedtime one.

Since I've been trying to get AF to come back for so long I've read about every method and theory on getting fertility back (and tried most everything, just because it didn't work for me doesn't mean they won't work for you), so here's some statistics:
6-7% of EBF women have AF return before 6 months.
38% of BF women have AF return between 6 and 12 months.
48% of BF women have AF return between 12-24 months
7-8% have AF return after 24 months.
For those not using bottles, dummies, working or otherwise separate from the baby, and feeding on demand through night and day (which is not me!) the average age of AF return is 14.6 months.
One upside to later fertility return is that the later your fertility returns the more likely it is to be full fertility right away.
I was 39 and at 8 months the Dr told me that I needed to give up BF'g if I wanted "any chance" of falling pregnant again. I considered this but felt incredibly guilty about it so decided I'd wait until 12 months then think about it again. But AF returned at 12 months and I fell pregnant the 2nd month after that (after taking 3 1/2 years the for our first baby!) and I was still BF'g morning and evening. So I think it's very individual as to how fertile or not you'd be BF'g that amount. Good luck!

Mine was taking a bottle at daycare, but never from me. And then she hated any kind of other milk. I was thinking the other day that I've been working on weaning for too long. I'd intended to cut her off at 1 year if AF hadn't returned, but then with one thing and another it just wasn't right. Plus we just can't beat BF when she gets sick and won't eat or drink anything. I'd not mind continuing at all, but I'd like my fertility back now!

I know I can still get closeness if she formula fed, but she isnt interested in bottles! She will at times (becoming more frequent as I run out of milk) take a formula / cows milk mix from a sippy cup, but she has to feed her self! Oh well.

DS feeds every 12 hrs, right before bed and first thing in the morning. 2 kids were hard enough when #2 was little, so we not worried about a small age gap and I wont be weaning DS any time soon as BF is still great for him even at this age the benefits arent any less than they were when he was younger.

Mine is coming up on 16 months and my AF is still not back. We'd meant to be TTC #2 well before now, but oh well. I've cut her down to just bedtime and overnight and after this week I'm going to be trying very hard to get rid of the over nights. So I guess I'm more on the way out of BF but still nominally TTC. I hope ovulation will resume quickly after stopping. I think I almost ovulated this week, but had an increase in BF at the last minute, so while everything looked go my temperature did not go up.

We were hoping for less time between them (I know, hard work at first) but perhaps due to DD being a very booby baby, my AF took ages to come back. Have now had 3, not as regular as before but not what anyone would call irregular either I expect. I am still BF but only once or twice a day and sometimes in the middle of the night. There's not a lot left in there for her any more.

Basically I thought I'd introduce myself as anonymously as possible (we aren't announcing we are TTC but I wanted someone to talk to) and hopefully meet some of you in a "due in " forum soon! #1 was conceived quickly so we are hoping for the same again - fingers very crossed.
