What I'm starting to stress about is I have not been given an actual date yet. Just wondered when those tht have had scheduled c sections were given the confirmed date. I need to organise my support like my mum to come up and help me and she needs to book time off work , and of course my husbands time off work, but I am assuming they are flexible with that due to the nature of birth. I'm just aware I will need extra help so the more precise the timing of help the better.
Anyway at what stage did you get your surgery booked in?
Thank you all

He was born 11/9/2013, (my midwifes birthday) ha-ha. Wasn't as bad as i thought at all i was in recovery for 5 hours after as i was having heavy bleeding cause my uterus wouldn't contract down and they couldn't get my pain under control which sucked cause i couldn't hold my baby till they got that under control. But once that was it was ok, iv had a fairly good recovery but am hoping for a vaginal next birth. I have however had a lot of trouble with breast feeding. Been very stressful but all in all i love being a mum best job in the world.

    Author: HelenOf3
Subject: 38978
Posted: 24 August 2013 at 7:07pm

Hi there - I am so pleased to finally find a forum like this. I had a wonderful midwife for my first pregnancy and did everything right, I thought, but ended up with an emergency c section. There was nothing anyone could have done. I was advised to have a specialist for future pregnancies and sought two independent opinions and reluctantly agreed to an elective c section as I was strongly advised this was my only safe option. I have now had 3 cesareans. I still don't understand what the stigma is. I have had some really negative and hurtful and nasty comments made to me about it. But what was I supposed to do? We didn't want this to stop us having more children but it has to be safe for mum and baby. The second was somewhat complicated but funnily enough the third has been a breeze! I don't tell people I have c sections anymore because I hate not knowing what the response is going to be. It is not my choice to have my births this way, I would do anything to change it, but I adore my 3 children and know they are worth it :-) Those of us who have had c sections should support each other and slowly help to educated people that it is not necessarily a 'choice' but just a fact of life. Without these interventions, not so long ago, 1 in 8-9 woman died in childbirth. I was told I would have been one of them, I was as close as half an hour away the specialists reckon. Pretty scary thought really.

The in laws live overseas so their stays are lengthy and 24/7 at our house so we have decided they will not come until bub is at least three months. Hopefully my mum I will find it easier to tell her when to come and go.
Thanks for advice on hospital. I will be delivering at Auckland national women's. must look into a tour. I think they like to move you to birthcare (smaller maternty hospital not far away) when you are able, but I'm hoping I can stretch my time in hospital as you have to share a room at birthcare unless you pay over $300 a night for a single room.

They will normally try to give you a single room for a CS..usually with yr own ensuite. A huge thing that I checked out hosp for when we looked around is a bed that goes up and down etc with a pulley handle above to hold onto..helps with mobility and independence in the first few days. We were going to go to Waikato but rejected it after seeing state of the ward etc and opted for Tauranga which my MW was also affiliated with. Good idea to have yr mum up to help out if you all get on..but have heard stories of some visitors that were more work than help IYKWIM. Another good tip for any new mum is get lots of meals made and frozen beforehand. Makes a huge diff to your days with a newborn..

Did you get a single room? was your partner able to stay the night? Bit concerned as we don't have any family living near by and my husband only gets two weeks of parental leave, might have to get my mum to travel up when he's back at work. Excited nonetheless. Trying to remain active in pregnancy and hopefully that'll help me with mobilising afterwards.

Edited by Babycakes1 - 11 August 2013 at 8:51am

I asked a lot of questions snd and we all shared tips which was great. My recovery with both CS was helped by a couple of things I think, really good support from partner. He just took over the cooking, cleaning, washing etc for the first few weeks and I didnt try to do more than I should, just chilled with bubs. I also was told the quicker you get moving around after surgery the better. ..so on 2nd day in hosp made myself get up for a shower with help and from then on woukd slowly shuffle round to kitchen and back for exercise. By the end ofmy stay in hosp day 5. Was feeling ready for home.

I personally had beautiful birthing experiences both times with an Em CS and an elective so dont let anyone tell you different. I think a lot depends on your expectations. Go into it with a positive attitude and read up on everything so you have knowledge because knowledge is power and this helps to take away that helpless feeling some woman experience. Author: millemama
Subject: 38978
Posted: 06 June 2012 at 1:16pm

sorry for late reply, teething issues here with grumpy bub. I second everything the others have said, despite what you read sometimes, ie can't have skin to skin with bubs and CS, they are too drugged up to feed property etcetc. I had skin to skin straight away and she latched on minutes after that. Same for both CS's, em and elective. Worried bout needle too as was in full on contractions first time round, but I did what the nurse told me (great advice, just like what tictac said, roll your back and relax) I honestly didn't feel it so was rapt with that.

Recovery, get up and about asap. Made myself get up the second day for a shower, but wasn't as mobile as first Em CS, but with nurses help did it and felt so much better after then it was slow and steady after that.

Take the pain medication they are offering before you need it even if its not your thing (wasn't mine) this is major abdominal surgery we are talking about and it will aid recovery.
DO NOT be afraid to ring for help, no matter how busy they are, thats what they are there for. Even if its just for a water or something to eat, or to change bubs. cos you are unable to the first day or so.

Taking natural iron supplement before birth and after will aid recovery especially if you lose a bit of blood. I also talk spirulina tablets and BF multi vit for energy.

Don't attempt too much when you come home even if you feel fine, cos you will probably pay for it later. Just chill out with your lovely new bubs and get to know them.

Oooh and prune juice, my saviour! Going to the loo can be a mission the first time after birth and anything to help that along is more than welcome. I took a big bottle to the hospital as well as comfort food, that I could help myself to when I was awake at odd hours.

Sorry for ramble but found advice like this invaluable to prep myself and both my CS experiences were great.

I'm not good as letting other people help so I made a mental list of things I could delegate to other people if they asked (my list was hanging washing, loading the dishwasher, making the older children's beds).

As Girls Rock said walking up and down the hall a bit will help, I made a point of going to the loo further away instead of the closer one (whenever I had a visitor to watch bubs). Once I got home I quite enjoyed doing the vacuuming, was good movement and quite good for my mental health too!

Hope everything goes well,

Most often referred to as a c/section, delivery is accomplished through an incision in the abdominal wall and uterus.

The decision to do a c/section may be made either prior to your due date because of a known condition or because of an unexpected complication during labour. In either case, competent doctors have your best interests in mind.

Keep in mind that having a c/s performed is a medical decision and that in no ways reflects on your motherhood.

There is no need to feel guilty or embarrassed over it. Just be thankful you and your baby are healthy.

So nice to see a positive blurb on c/s!

My advice is to ask to be referred early because I wish I had done it sooner rather than trying to make these decisions right at the end!

my other option was a natural birth with an epidural too- nothing wrong with that in fact they say it can help because that way if you end up needing a c/s during labour then you already have that pain relief in so you're good to go- no mucking around trying to get the darn thing in!

2nd time labours are often much faster. 6 hours in you'll be a lot further on than last time

it sounds like you do have a good case for a VBAC as, like you said, nothing your body did went wrong. heaps of people do do vbacs and there are lots of internet supports and info out there about them.

one big reason some people chose not to is because of the risk of uterine rupture. It happens very rarely but when it does happen its devastating. If you are in hospital they will want you to wear a monitor constantly as babies heart rate can be a sign of a rupture going to happen. That can be hard if you are trying for a natural birth, as you are then 'stuck' somewhat to the bed and the one position, but if you have an epi you wouldn't be walking much either

good luck with your decision! I had all the same feelings when it would happen accidently with DD1, so during my second pregnancy I did some serious reading and if you do it safely, then its ok. I co-sleep most nights at the moment although I start every night with DD2 in the cot and will phase it out at some stage. Anyway, here is a link to the safe co-sleeping guidelines. Not everyone bonds straight away and it can be even more difficult when you didn't get your skin to skin straight away, but as you have discovered we all bond in the end. Less worry Kelzie and more just doing and being with your beautiful daughter and it will all come together for you, but make sure you ask for help when you need it. I have/do co-sleep both my beautiful daughters, as long as you are sensible with how you do it, it can be the most wonderful experience, and you will get more sleep that way. I bring my little 6wk old into bed with me at night to feed and almost always fall asleep that way, but I make sure that I have her propped up on me with a pillow either side so that when I do fall asleep she is not going anywhere, I seem to have the most wonderful sleeps like that, and also you can lie with her on your side after you have fed her that way if you prefer and amazingly your mummy instincts take over and you won't roll on her. But just be comfortable with whatever your decision and enjoy your beautiful gift

Edited by millemama

    Author: kelzie_rose
Subject: 38978
Posted: 31 January 2012 at 8:13pm

My c/s birth story:

Basically, I cried as I walked into the operating room. The last two times I had had surgery before my c/s I had done the same, so meh. They got me on the side of the bed to do the epidural, and I freaked out. Neil sat on the chair and held my hands while they did the local and the epidural. Freak out subsided as my knees went warm and fuzzy. They lay me down and I told them that I wanted them to put me under. The obstetrician talked me through it, while the anesthetist prepped for a general. Ob managed to talk me into staying awake, mainly by saying that it would be that much quicker that I'd be meeting my girl. (How wrong was he!) And so Neil and the anesthetist talked to me throughout the procedure. I can only describe it as someone tickling the inside of my tummy! No pain or anything. They pulled Evie out and Neil leaned over to look at her, and they lifted her up so I could see her. And I said... "Eww." I knew she wouldn't cry right away as I had heard that a lot of c/s babies are a bit shocked and need a bit of oxygen. Neil was allowed to go over and see her, but neither of us were prepared for the emergency team to get called in. I don't really know what went on as I was crying and couldn't see anything. From what I understand there was something unidentifiable (but possibly vernix) (like an inch long length of stuff) stuck in her throat and she needed compressions and oxygen. Finally, I heard her cry.
So she was wheeled to the NICU and I was wheeled to recovery. DH, Mum, Dad, little bro and MIL all came in once at a time to see me, then all went once at a time to see Evie. Neil took some pics and brought them in to show me. I got to see her on the way back to the ward and it freaked me out seeing her in the NICU. And I was so drugged up that I can't remember it. In the middle of the night, a nurse came in to help me express my colostrum, then I was wheeled down to the NICU to see her. She was eventually brought into me when she was about 24hrs old. And we spent the next 5 days in a nice routine of 3hr sleep - wake - change - feed - repeat. In between all of that (because 5 days in hospital all blend into one!) she developed jaundice. We also realised she has Positional Talipes (so club foot that is because of how she was sitting in my tummy, and should come right with massage, exercise and time.) We have an appointment on Thursday at Starship to check on the cyst and discuss surgery - the thought of which makes me teary to think of. We have been referred to the renal team about the kidney, and yet to hear from them.
Because I didn't get my skin to skin and I saw her only twice briefly in her first 24hrs, I really didn't feel attached to her. But I looked at her today and started crying, I love her so much that it scares me. And it's made me love Neil so much more too. Maternal Mental Health came to see me in hospital as some of the nurses could tell I was a bit sad and that I wasn't too attached to her. I just hope that her little while with no oxygen wont cause any developmental problems.

Coming home was scary, as suddenly I didn't have midwives and nurses with me, but Neil and his mum are here with me full time for the next two weeks. And... Routine has gone out the window somewhat. So I'm demand feeding and her sleep time varies. The biggest shock was that she'll sleep in the bassinet during the day, but refuses to go down in it during the night. So Neil sat up with her sleeping in his arms for a few hours. When she woke, he woke me up and I changed and fed her, while he went for a sleep and I stayed up while she slept in my arms. Except I fell asleep and so we ended up co-sleeping. Woke up and felt so so terrible about it - what if I had rolled on her? It really made me feel like I have no idea what's happening and how I'm going to cope.

Have you ever had a puckering with your CS scar. I've got a small (5c piece) of skin that has puckered out from the scar, the rest of it has healed beautifully and flat. And this little piece is still quite raw after a week and half of discovering it after taking initial dressing off. MW is checking it each week, but it still hasn't healed yet, not infected, just still bit weepy. Where its situated makes it difficult to heal I guess as I am quite active (but not overdoing it) and because of the CS apron it covers it, so hard to leave dressing off to air dry. Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

As long as you are totally content with your choice then there's no reason why anyone else should stick their oar in. And yes, the outcome of a healthy, live baby is the important thing - well, that and a healthy mum I think.

Do you feel like you're all ready for the birth and bringing her home?

So will be going in for my elective c-sec on Jan 25th.

Like someone else in here, the thought of a VB always scared me but didn't want friends/family/strangers thinking I was too posh to push! And now bubs has taken the option of a VB away from me anyway. (I know she may still turn but I really don't think she will.) Luckily no one has started saying it's a shame I wont get to have a VB. Wouldn't know what to say to them if they did.

To me, getting baby out safely if the most important thing, regardless of how it happens. Right?

Went to Tauranga Hosp and was treated brilliantly by the staff, not one grumpy mw among them! Operation went really well, laughing and joking in theatre, no pain from spinal needle. Very weird sensation when they were rummaging around in there after my little girl was born tho, (was fast asleep the first time after labouring) Definitely fits the saying "rummaging around in the bottom of a handbag". But recovery has been great too. Four days in hosp in total which was just right for me, and that bonding time with my precious new girl was wonderful.

    Author: lawyergirl2.0
Subject: 38978
Posted: 13 December 2011 at 11:14pm

Hi there

Just wanted share my experience in case it helps someone as I found this thread helpful to me before having my baby.

I had always been scared of the idea of having VB and just thought I would have a c-section. Not sure why I was so phobic about VB but it just seemed like everyone I knew had had some kind of drama during delivery and at least half of them had ended up having emergency c-sections anyway.

When I actually got pregnant I started researching and was like: hang on a minute its not perhaps as easy as all that! I mean I really got to thinking about how I was going to be operated on and basically cut open.

So then I drove my partner crazy researching the pros and cons for nine months. I mean I had basically decided to have a c-section failing finding something in the research to convince me otherwise but I couldn't stop reading about it. I read so many scientific journal articles by doctors and also more than healthy amount of discussion threads on websites like this one!

One thing that I did find annoying was the number of people who really seem to think that it is a failing if you do not have a VB. To them its like a rite of passage that you need to suffer or something to have your baby. I never felt like I needed to experience a VB to experience "birth". Also I think its a bit rich that people talk about having "natural birth" because I don't know anyone who really has that!!

I think top priority has to be your health and state of mind and health of your baby and if you decide you prefer c-section to VB then that is your choice.

In the end I found nothing to dissuade me. I had the c-section and everything went to plan. The operation was fine - in the theatre the atmosphere was friendly and happy and I felt very confident with my doctor and the staff at the hospital- it happened so quickly and I only had an instant of nervousness then I was holding my baby. Recovery was very fast. I am fit person who does a lot of sport so that probably helped. I was up walking around the day of the operation and driving within 2 weeks.

If anyone has any questions about having elective c-section by maternal request then I will try to answer them. Everyone makes their own decisions about birth but from my point of view having a c-section worked really well for me and my baby.

-

This can make things different than before.

You should def go see your doctor.

Also, I don't know how you are feeding your baby, but if you are breastfeeding, this can cause a massive decrease in estrogen, which makes the vagina very dry and sensitive which can cause a lot of pain. This is really easily treated with an estrogen cream.

I had em CS as have a lot of the women in this post and have chosen to have an elective this time, without a medical reason. Will be getting one in approx 2wks. My MW was informed from the beginning and I have never wavered in my decision, living 2.5hr away from hospital put a spin on my decision as well, and MW is supportive because its what I want.

Hope this has helped.

GL

The theatre staff were lovely and joking although I did know them lol. I had an obstetrtian registra cause the consultant was away but she was lovely, she said she could tell who did my last c section cause he is notorius for short low c sections. Unfortunetly baby was on the big side and because I have a short torso he was still stuck up under my ribs too. She had real difficulty getting him out. The anaethetist even had to lean over me and push from above down on my tummy! The surgeon has to cut the uterus further but because of the size of the baby I ended up tearing and had a small heamorrage, so they had to call the on call consultant in to help her out. Mean while my 8lb 6oz baby boy Ari was born however he had trouble breathing so was transferred to the special care baby unit and put on a breathing machine for a few hours but improved immediatly with that. My DH went with the baby and I was still on the table for a while as they found the bleeder and stitched me up. Although things didnt go to plan with myself and Ari I could not fault our care and I had total trust in mine and Ari's team of doctors that I knew everything was going to be ok. Which it was, we were both healthy happy and home two days later. I am a bit more sore this time round but is because of my tear and the extra pulling.

Will know in a couple of weeks my date for CS and get my pre-meds, check the hospital out (Waikato) and the birthing unit, Waterford. Hopefully the one and only time to see the OB before baby comes, living 2.5hrs away from hospital thats the way they do things here if no complications. So hearing your story puts another good spin on my decision. Have been adamant from beginning of PG that it would be elective but it really is a different feeling building up to it than last time with a Em CS and blissfully unaware.

Has baby came yet?

I had my baby boy via ELCS at 8.56am tues 18 Oct, Spinal was in at 8.50am so it was very quick! Back in maternity ward at 9.45am

It was fantastic, the recovery was awesome, even thou I thought my 1st c/s was great, this one has been much better (so far ...day 9)

There was a wee bit of scar tissue from previous c/s (which I had no signs of myself) so they cleaned that out, so that was a bit "rumagy" feeling, didnt have that with 1st obviously, but I didnt care had babe in arms on chest, skin to skin suckling.

team in theatre was amazing and were talking about how ridulous the WHO recommendation of 15% C/S RATE IS. Ob just said its never going to be achieved and its about safety of mums & babies not percentages, he said he reckoned c/s rate that week had been 5o/5o vb, but most had been emergencies, we were the only ELCS that day and week.

I think my recovery was better this time as lost slightly less blood, and had better rest going into cs and higher iron stores/iron count etc, who knows why. I was suprised it was better, considering the "cleaning out of scar tissue" expected to be sorer.

Anyway baby was 6lb12 (3020gm) at birth at 39w5days so I was so pleased to get him out as he had low glucose from not gaining weight in that last week & half inside me and once he was out he was shaking from the low blood sugars and good to get the colostrum into him, he had to get tested 1 hr after every feed for the first day and improved each time. YAH! So with jaundice and low blood sugar kept on the 3hr feeds. he is doing grand and gained 80gm in first week to be now 3100gm

Im so pleased to have ELCS, I thought I would feel "mean" about getting baby out before natural signs kicked in like it did with my daughter has her waters broke and was 4/5cm but with the whole not gaining weight and low blood sugar Im so pleased we did choose with guidance from OB to get him out when we did, I was ready. they said the placenta was "ok" I kept quizzing them for more info on that, but didnt get much feed back from either OB/MW.

Like you say SALZ its just so nice to have them in your arms and the worrys over.

Good luck hope you have your babe in arms now.

I had the problem of not able to make the decision between VBAC and elective CS, with all the info and support I still didnt know what to do. Its true when they say you need to be 100% behind your decision. At 35 weeks choose CS but felt so wrong about it (have no idea why am not a VBAC die hard) I stated having lots of cramps and braxton hicks and lost my show so got excited and cancelled the CS. Well 3 weeks later it turns out I have irritable uterus, extremely low amniotic fluid and border line high Bp. If I had kept my booked CS I would have had the baby today so would be cuddling baby right now!
Just wish I wasnt so wishy washy over this decision. You are so right with there being added pressure!

Not a vent at all!

recently a friend whom has had 4 "straight forward vb" said to me she would feel so "ripped off if she was like me and HAD to have a C/S" by not being able to give birth vaginally...I said Honestly it doesnt bother me at all. I feel blessed to have conceived easily/carried without too much pain and discomfort / Breast feed and pleased we live in this modern times where c/s are a safe option.

I knew about the help, but didnt want a random stranger to come into my house to help clean etc when DH is perfectly capable (haha quite like bossing him around for a change) . But Im sure it would be a great help for those that really require the extra assistance.

Im 38w5 today, have scan/ob check up Thurs, c/s maybe this friday or next mon/tues/wed, my bubs scanned on yesterday at 6lb6 so the paediatrician & OB would prefer he is closer to 7lb before the pull the old quick un pick out. so Im happy with that am 40wk next thur

I went at 37w5 & 36w4 with the girls so feel very "overdue" but OB keeps saying he cant believe bubs hasnt pulled "the rip cord" like the girls did by now

I was induced this time around at 41 weeks using the foley cathetar method, google it if you need some info. Despite the induction failing and another c-section, I am much happier about the birth second time around as I was able to make the decision about a c-section (the outcome would have been the same whatever happened). I have bonded well with my second DD, had skin to skin immediately and breastfeeding is going well. My only concern is dealing with a energetic 2.5 year old and recovering from the surgery.

After the CS they confirmed that she was never going to come out the std way, so was pleased with the outcome and there was no stress involved. Pretty positive experience all up and good recovery for me. So am opting for elective CS this time. Had my mind made up before I met the MW and have stuck to my guns. No questions have really been asked. Will see the OB at around 32 wks for one visit and get my pre op meds then. Then will see him/her next time the morning of the CS unless there are any problems that arise. I'm ok with that as its a 5hr round trip to see them

Funny thing is I'd always been totally anti c sections but didn't hesitate saying yes when given the news DD was breech for the safety of us both. I'm now pregnant again and feel I want to go for an elective, people just assume I want to try for a VBAC, I'm almost too scared to say no I want a c section. DD will be 17 months and I'll have help for the first few weeks. I just don't want to be induced or end up with another emergency section if I can... MW said I have til 35 weeks to decide as that's when I'll see OB, I just worry what the MW's may think if me if I choose an elective. Oh well only 16 weeks so have a wee while to wait...

I haven't discussed this with my MW yet so I will bring it up next week and see how it goes. As for going to a private clinic just for the birth, I asked one in Mount Eden about that and they said no, they have such a high number of patients that they can't just take on surgeries. I'll let you guys know how I get on!

Like meet with whoever it is who will do it privately- as they will be able to let you know whether you can still use a MW but just use the OB for the surgery.

I thought I heard here in chch they can do electives at chch womens (the public hospital) but I heard that a wee while ago so could be wring

also, keep talking to your MW. what is she like, on the scale of natural birth things? eg quite balanced or a bit of a hippie (not that theres anything wrong with that, just that what works for some doesn't work for others )

I have a friend who knew straight away she wanted a C/S- did end up with one but only after a failed induction and some damage to the baby from all the stress of it. I think what she taught me was that sometimes mums just 'know' what they need, even if there is no reason on paper for why they need a c/s...if that makes sense!

all the best, would be keen to hear how you get on

To be honest though even the private OBs are not big on electives for no medical reason. About the cost, we had a private OB (and ended up with an elective C) and I plan on going back to him if we have a second pregnancy - worth every cent in my opinion!

If you are feeling overwhelmed, scared, traumatised by the thought of VB then you should explain this to MW, doctor etc. These are circumstances that are cause for an elective CS through the public health system, but of course they will try to talk you out of this, just be firm of your reasoning. Otherwise not sure of the private vs public, hope this info has helped. GL

No complications, no medical reason, I just feel that this is the right decision for me. Anyway, I have gone through the public system so far with a hospital MW and am now at 28 weeks. My decision at this point is either to continue with the public system and fight my way to an elective c/s (not even sure if that is possible) or to go private and pay $4300. In an ideal world I would like to stick with the public system and just pay for my elective surgry (which I have been told is around $1800). Has anyone done this or do you have to go private for a completely elective (no medical reason) c/s? Thanks
