My pregnancy with DD was tough on my body so I would also like to get more active and up my fitness before the next one too (that would actually involved getting up off the couch I guess!). I read somewhere that three years is a natural gap between kids...ahh, who knows. Not that I have to decide right now anyway, just casting about for experience and opinions!
Thanks Maree!

It was around this time (7 months) that we thought, awww, wouldn't be great to have another baby, they could be really close and be great friends....IDIOTS!!!! (us, not the kiddies). While I'm sure it's going to be really cool in a year or so when they can play together, getting pregnant this soon after having a baby meant that my body hadn't healed properly (takes about 12 months), making it a really hard pregnancy. My pubic bones seperated 5 months early so I could hardly walk, couldn't drive, ended up sleeping in a reclining chair in the lounge for months and worst of all, couldn't pick up Andrew. I was also HEAVILY pregnant as Andrew started walking, and had to chase around a toddler. My naps had to coincide with the toddlers, and if I was really tired I just had to keep muddling through. Because Andrew was 16 months when Connor was born, he wasn't really old enough to follow instructions (like 'leave that alone') so b'feeding Connor while the terrortot was roaming was tough. It took me three months before I so much as left the house by myself with them. Then there are other issues like two kids in nappies, two kids still in cots, two kids in full on carseats, grocery shopping with a baby and a toddler....all fun. As I was saying, later on the short gap is good....I hope...
DD is nearly 8 months and I'm thinking about TTC for #2. I just loved being pregnant over winter, so we'd probably start in a few months or more. Major hitch in that plan is that I still don't have AF and I guess won't get it until I reduce or stop BF.
Are any of you first time mums thinking the same thing? I swore up and down after DD was born that I wouldn't have another one (before I forgot about the labour) and since then haven't been too keen to start trying because I just love DD so much and can't imagine having another baby who might take me away from her IYKWIM. But now I don't know...
One of the more organised mum's in my coffee group is starting that with her little girl today. Connor loves the bath - he'd probably love swimming to, if his mum wasn't so disorganised. Ah well. Poor kid. Disorganised is just the beginning. One day he'll be a self conscious teenager and I'll really hit my stride.
I think Connor is eating well because he watches his big brother eating and wants in on the action. His favourites are still fruit and vegetables - although I made a chicken and vegetable puree for him last weekend which he loved.
I hope the teething settles and that tooth comes out soon. Is she chewing on teethers? Connor will chew on anything that won't run away at present (including sluggish relatives).

It sounds like your daughter is pretty mobile.
Connor is doing well on solids, eating three mushed up puree meals a day as well as three or four bottles. He's still sleeping twice a day which is LOVELY.
So, where in the world are you? What's your daughter's name? General nosey-ness etc....
Cheers,
Maree

MIL will have bubs on Saturdays when I am out on a job and hubby has his days off during the week so on those days he will be with Baylee in the afternoon, so on those days I will at least get a good 5 hours to work. I think it certainly helps working for yourself, at least you can pick and choose and fit your work in when it suits you, even if it is 10 at night!
Hey Paws, August is a while away yet, hopefully you won't have to go back. fingers crossed!

But really dont want to go back as it is in greenlane and driving there in the morning traffic and back in the evening traffic with maddi seems like a nightmare, plus she would be at daycare all day which is fine with me if we have to do it but if I can find another way then thats what I would prefer.
Yup Maree - I hear you on the no salary front - just got my credit card bill and realised that nope, there is no money in my bank account to pay it - I have to sit down soon and teach myself to work on a budget (yeah right - maybe after that I will start being nice to my mother-in-law and stop lying to hubby about what I spend at the hairdressers and also win a nobel peace prize...)...some things are just not in my nature...

I seem to miss him more than he misses me. I don't think he cares who hes with as long as they have food!

Well, my perfect sleeper looks like he may be joining the non sleeping club I though it was too good to last! The last few night he has been waking and taking a coule of hours to settle back to sleep. As he was feeding at 5 previously I have been reclutant to give in and feed him earlier as I would hate to put the feed times back again. Last night he woke at 2 so I gave in and tried a dummy. Baylee is a thimb sucker but is so un co that he can't keep it which is why he won't settle. After a few trys he finally settled in his swaddle. He didn't then wake for his feed until 5.45 so I knoe he wasn't hungry.

I have been trying a few things as a couple of weeks ago he was waking from wriggling out of his covers so we had been putting him in his sleeping bag, whoch seemed to work, but now it is just the thumb issue. The thing is he does sleep better swaddled (less likly to wake), but then he can't get his thumbs so if he does wake I will need to go to him anyway. Anyway after all that rambling what I am getting at is I'm not sure the best way for hime to sleep to stop him from waking up early.

Paws, whne are you thinking of going back to work if you do go? And Frantic, I remember you were looking at working form home with your own business, how is that going?

I wake him at 10.30 for a feed and then he usually wakes once in the night at about 5.30. I do wake him for feeds now as he used to do a lot of cluster feeding in the afternoon/early evening but the routine seems to have stopped that. He only does it now when he is going through a growth spurt but as I've been expressing and building up my milk supply hopefully it won't happen as I can just express less. I try and ristrict his sleep time between 7 and 7 to 4 1/2 hours. Of course not all days are a crusey as that....

I try to make sure that he has no more than 2 1/2 to 3 hours between afternoon feeds so that he's building a good base for night time. He's starting to be awake more during the day now, but isn't really awake for more than 30 minutes at a time away from the boob, bath or change mat. He'd still be sleeping anywhere from 18 to 20 hours out of the 24 at a guess.
I cook dinner and do the mad rush around while Andrew is having a nap and occupied. If I don't have dinner pretty much organised and ready to turn on by 2pm it's not going to happen. That way dinner is ready for Andrew at 5 to 5.30pm ish and he can have his bath after that and be in bed by 6.30pm. Everyone else gets to eat at 6.30pm when the terrortot has suspended his chaos for sleepy time - though that doesn't necessarily mean that I get hot food - Connor has an amazing sense of when it's time for me to eat and sometimes starts his grizzling then - so the hubby and I take turns of the 'who gets the hot meal tonight and who occupies the baby' game.
Connor pulled another awake from 2 to 4.30am spell last night. I fed him, changed him and put him down in his bassinet to put himself to sleep for the first time - I figured his four week grace period is over and it's time to start learning how to get to sleep in his own bed.

I have May and Oct babies, it's just that they're not really babies any more.

Paws - I hope today went better than yesterday for you. I'm starting to hit my stride and have had dinner cooked and ready before 6pm two days in a row. I'm also up to date on the washing, drying and folding so next on the list may be actual housework like vacuuming. Scary thought - might leave it until next week.
Syd - glad you have a good Plunket nurse - my one is great as well - and our local Plunket does lots of extra things like play and coffee groups which are really good. Yay Plunket.
Well, I've got a screaming one monther in the other room I have to go and attend to. Hope everyone else is doing well.
Its good to hear that the fuzzis are working better for you now Paws. I honestly don't find the extra washing from the cloths too bad, I seem to be endlessly washing anyway so its just one extra load!

Baylee is doing great. I feel very lucky with him especailly when I talk to friends and hear how they are doing. We are down to just one night waking now at 4am. Hes last feed is at 10.30pm and he usually wakes at about 7. I can't believe what a diffrance it makes, I am actually feeling like me again instead of a zombie feeding machine! I am going by the Contented Baby routines and he is doing really well in it. It was a bit of work at first, mostly just staying home and working with it. We still have trouble getting him to sleep at 7 and he still wants to feed on and off untill he falls asleep, usually at 8.30 at the lastest. Hes always had a good feed before he goes to bed, but he uses the breast for comfort to help him get to sleep, just basiclly lays there with it in his mouth!

My only other issue at the moment is expressing. I'm not sure I've quite got it right as it seems to take so long to get anything. I also get heaps more from one side than the other. Not sure what that is all about. I will have to give my midwife a call I think.

I hope everyone else is doing ok?

My meds have been increased slightly so I'm taking a full pill now so hopefully that will really be taking effect next week and there will be a more stable mum!

Maddie was pretty unsettled yesterday and we're wondering if it's because she picked up on the fact that we were all emotional and grouchy yesterday. Grouchy due to lack of sleep and emotional becuase B's parents moved down country today to Whakatane. His dad was already there but his mum moved today. We said our goodbyes last night and had dinner and all and there were lots of tears. Glad to hear that your C-section wound is clearing up - that must make a huge difference!
The last three weeks have gone by in a complete blur. The last two weeks in particular seems like one big long day - in the same way that days used to blend together when I was younger and had a big night on the town (turps) and went straight from club/party to uni without a sleep imbetween. It's just in this instance I don't have the hangover or sketchy dancing on tables recollections - more of a 'wild nappy change' or dancing about the lounge trying to entertain a 3 week old or terrortot.
I'm starting to get more into a routine at home though - Nick and I made it out to the mall on Saturday so that he could get his haircut and I did some more Xmas shopping. I've almost got the Xmas presents out of the way.
Anyway, once again the small(er) one is awake and demanding more access to boob. Take care and toorah for now.

Breastfeeding officially sucks. I'm completely over the 2 - 3 hourly on call all the time 45 minute breastfeeding routine and would be really happy if there was some way I could make Nick do it for a week or two. Andrew (terrortot) has worked out that while I'm breastfeeding Connor I'm stuck to the chair and he can do pretty much whatever he wants because I can't get up and chase him. I'm also over the exposure aspect of everyone in my family seeing my boobs (yes, I know they are just food vessels now, kinda like big pink latte bowls, but the in-laws still didn't need to see them) and completely over the let-down leaking. Blegh.
Well, I've grumped and had my ten minutes in front of the computer - time to go and feed my wee cherub again.
Hopefully everyone else is having a good weekend.

I recommend the Sweet William rice crackle chocolate bars (also available in roast almond, tangerine and plain) up by the counter. Fingers crossed that Maddi's colic clears up before you end up on celery and carrots alone.
Syd - I'd definitely express while away at work to keep supply up and avoid rock hard boobs. Have a chat to your midwife or plunket nurse about the best way to manage expressing and feeding and avoiding engorgement.
As for the chaos house (here) - Connor decided to pull an all nighter last night and had me out in the lounge yet again. As a result, Nick had to work from home to help with Andrew to stop me from falling asleep and letting him get away with shaving the cat (or some such toddler hobby). After a day of sitting on the couch with the baby, just feeding and snoozing, I'm feeling a little bit better. We'll have to see how tonight goes!
Oh - in terms of the hard times girls, I can't remember exactly how long it takes to get on top of this newborn thingee, however if you look in the other posts, people start talking about trying for another one around 5 to 7 months - which means the sleep deprivation has either hit insanity levels OR, which is more likely - the babies start to become a lot more sociable and cute. As I recall 4 months is one of my favourite baby ages. No teeth, cute and babylike and sleeping a lot more. In any case, it does get easier. Really. It's just the first 6 to 10 weeks suck.

I am with you on the meltdowns - i have had a few, but it is getting a bit better...acually my worst time was when dh was home and I was anticipating him going back to work, i wa so stressed about being on my own, but now that we are in our third day on our own i can honestly say the reality isnt as scarey as the concept, and i feel camler cos i am not dreading this thing that hasnt happened yet (dunno if tha makes sense or not...sleep depravation to blame there I am sure)
as for me they have told us my maddi definately has colic and reflux and to cut out all dairy and eggs for at least a week to see if that helps - if taht doesnt work we have to cut out all gluten products for at last a week... I am seriously hanging out for a coffee with milk or a pizza and it has only been 2 days aaarrgghh~! but if it helps with this sore tummy and crying she has then it will be worth it...
althogh i still eel like i get nothing done all day and and wonder when life will ever get back to normal i think things are gettign slightly better, i feel like i am starting to know more about what she needs which is giving me a bit more confidence (although when she starts her all day screaming sessions it seriously makes me feel like i am back to sqaure one ut at least now i know its ot my fault)...
ahhhhh 3 weeks down, according to other people who have had kids it shoudl all get better in another 3 weeks or so...actually my sister in law was saying to me today that the first 3 - 4 weeks are the hardest by far and that we have goten through the worst bit, so thats gotta be a good thing!
maree hope you are doing well - cant imagine what it would be like having a newborn and a todler, you are definately brave!
Syd I will try the no lights on thing - thats a good idea, thanks...

ahhhhh wow i never imagined i would be able to function on so little sleep...actually i am proud of us all, just think about how huge the last few weeks have been, so many chnages, emotionally, physially etc, and on top of that we have had next to no sleep - and stil we are looking after our babies and they are all fine and healthy - i think we all deserve a pat on the back!

I had to see her anyway as my c-section wound has been weeping and midly infected (I have all the luck at the moment!) but that seems to be on the mend! YAY!

Anyway Monique has agreed that we need to head this off pronto so given my meltdowns, history of depression and recognition that these melt downs are NOT the normal baby blues I've found myself back on anti-depressents for the first time in around 6 years.

I do feel better having taken this step though as I know things were headed out of control for me and it's not a road I'm in a hurry to go down again! I'm on a really mild dose so hopefully that will be enough to head things off and I can stay on the mild dose but it will be reviewed.

That's about all happening with us, today has been a little easier with Maddie but we are in her normal "I refuse to settle" period or "arsenic 3 hours" so we'll see how it goes!

It's been a non-stop whirl of feeding, nappy changing, terrortot retrieval and clean-up, feeding some more, more nappies, wiggles DVDs and chanting 'what the hell have I done?'.... We're doing the all-hours of the morning feeding and no sleeping. I'm going to try and turn it around by not letting Connor sleep more than two hours at a time during the day and feeding him more, thus hopefully making him both tired and full of food by the late night time.
I'd be careful with the expressing up for a night's sleep Syd - it can backfire as you end up getting engorged breasts and waking up either really uncomfortable or worst case scenario, heading into mastitis (sp) land. Maybe aim at just missing one feed rather than an entire night's worth to start with?
Well, my two minutes is up - time to go and serve the little people again. Take care everyone -

So far Baylee has always just gone back to sleep. It could just be that that he likes his sleep lots like his dad and nothing to do with anything else!

Paws, I did find the first day at home alone quite hard, but hubby had to go in to work on the Friday and Baylee was born on the Wednesday morning so it was all still so new and scary. It was also when I got the third day blues, so I ended up having a good old blub to my mum! It does get easier, and now I relly enjoy being home with just me and Baylee. We make sure that dad gets lots of time with him when he get home. He has a bath with Baylee and get him ready for bed in the evenings so they have thier time to.

I'm finding the night feeds hard, just staying awake! The last couple of nights have been great though cos I've had the last feed at 11 then one at 3 and then again at 7. I feel a bit less like a zombie after that! I just hope it continues and dosen't go back to 3 hourly.

I just had a thought with the sleep thing, a friend of mine had this suggetstion which she did and found was a god send. She would express a load of milk and then one night a week, when hubby had a day off the next day hubby would do all the night feeds, just to give her chance to recharge for a night. Like Jax says, it does get easier.

Now ... you will probably find that Maddi settles down A LOT after the osteopath, and her colic should be helped as well. They seem to be able to do wonders for babies. A lot of our coffee group have had their babies to an osteopath, and b'cos I go to a chiropractor, Amelia has been there. Took 2 visits for her neck to come right then she decided that breast feeding was actually fine! So good luck!!

I can't remember if you had a C-section (or was that Paws?) anyway, if you haven't driven yet, make sure you do wait the 6 weeks. I drove at 5½ weeks and was ok (auto), but after a couple more weeks I drove my car (manual) and boy the next day was sore. Plus you feel really rather strange! So just be aware.

Anyway, hope you are all doing ok today. We are off to the chiro shortly.

Take care, and have a good w/end. And pop into the July Mummy thread for some positive news about how it gets better :)

I went to see a lady called Linda Caplin in Mairangi Bay, and as pricey as it was, the treatment was well worth it ! It took Erin's body a couple of days to fully 'unwind' as the osteopath put it, but she has a full range of neck / head motion now - so it's one less thing for us to worry about.

And I have to agree with the not being prepared for the newborn chaos sentiment, I felt exactly the same way - and am only now starting to come out of the fog ! Hmmm... that doesn't sound too good does it ? LOL But keep in mind I admit (although don't always talk about) having somewhat of a history with anxiety disorder - fun times (not!).

Maree - does Nick not get more time off? I thought EDS would have been relatively generous with his "paternity leave"... ?

For all of you lovely new mums (and I mean that) - a bit of advice that Maree has already pointed out, sleep when you can and don't feel bad about it. As strange as it sounds, I almost felt guilty about napping during the day as if something was wrong with it, not realising how badly my body needed sleep even if it came in pieces. And if any if you on the North Shore need to / want to talk or have a visit, let me know ! Have baby, willing to travel LOL If you don't already have my number and want it, just PM me

Last but not least:

Maree and Paws, I promise to come and visit you next week, I have kept my calendar clear (except for Thursday) especially ! Let me know if there's *anything* you want brought over or need, ok?

Love, lots of and gnight !

    Author: emeldee
Subject: 3748
Posted: 12 October 2006 at 11:14am

Syd - the only things stopping me from going for a home birth would be the mess to clean up afterwards - and the prospect of a know-it-all pre-teen giving me pointers from the couch and an into everything terrortot trying to get in on the action. Isn't sad when the only 'alone time' you and your hubby get is in the delivery room while the midwife has slipped out for a coffee before the baby is born?
Pain during childbirth is a strange thing. It hurts like nothing before (well, the two that I did without the drugs did), but it's a pain where you know you are working towards something and you know that it will eventually end. Also, the minute that the little squirmer is out, the world is a brilliant and happy place and you're amazed at the little person you're holding. The epidural was strange in that way - it was surreal and I had to convince myself I was actually having a baby. That being said, being able to walk about comfortably straight away and having no stitches or grazes was the bestest thing this time around and helped with my recovery. I didn't feel like I'd run a marathon so much as walked briskly down the beach.
I agree with the time to get out of the house statement - I've learnt (though it's taken me 3 kids to learn it) that you can actually leave the house without all of the paraphernalia. If the kiddie makes such a mess that he needs two changes of clothes, it's time to go home anyway. The one bonus for breastfeeding is that we don't need to prepare the bottles and pack those before leaving the house - meaning the deadline outings have reduced.
Paws - fingers crossed that it will all sort out with the fuzzibunz soon. We've found with all of our boys that their bums will only tolerate one brand of nappy. With Sean it was huggies, with Andrew and Connor it's Treasures Ultra. They get rashes with any other kind. Typical that their bums demand the most expensive nappies on the market!
Good luck with catching up on sleep - and enjoying your little people.

At least she slept during the night and feeds are starting to come back into a 3 1/2 hourly routine...just bigger feeds now. Hopefully we'll slip back to the 4 hourly routine soon. (as much as you can have a routine with an almost 2 week old that is!)

I'm also dreading hubby going back to work, at least we have another 2 weeks before he goes back but....eep!
