I do find trade me a rip off sometimes. It depends. For my daughters clothing and toys, i go to a second hand shops. Swapping could be cool, agree it should be people who have posted a fair bit so that hopefully no ones ends up getting a bad deal.

I just bought some cheapie singlets (ones with domes to do up at the crotch) at the warehouse set of 3 for $12. I bought size one but might buy another set in the 12-18mth size. The cotton not all that soft so have now washed a couple of times and its nicer.

I think alot of things on trade me are overpriced I have been looking at double mountain buggys on TM just watching what they go for etc one has been relisted a few times its says its 10+ years old been through 4 kids and in pictures looks very faded and starts at $250 I think that person should think they've had their moneys worth out of it and be happy if someone bought it for a grandparent to use for $100.

But I didn't know if that was allowed. As I struggle to find the money or items cheap enough for my baby in the next size and keep worrying she'll not have enough clothes to wear once she turns 1.

kinda long ish, cover most of my bum.
and the chest region front and back is got that stiching that makes it stretchy yet not if that makes sense.
they come in blue, green, grey, white and black.

I got Mat wear from Kmart too, and I lived in Leggins and those dress tops from Glassons too, loved the whole buy a pair of leggins and a dress for $25 they had!

I have to admit I was a bit of a 'snob' towards 2nd hand stuff for DD as I've never really had anything 2nd hand before having her but tbh, she grows so fast that I found it a waste of $$ paying full price on brand new items when she was in them for a month or 2 max, now she's slowing down but at 10.5 mo is already in 12-18 mo or 24mo size clothing! That's where most of mine came from (not that I actually used maternity clothes a lot of the time, just biger sizes), and all my feeding tops are from there too. I found before I had my youngest DD, who is nearly 11 months old. I got good deals on bulk lots while I was still pregnant and maybe twice since she was born. It seems that the prices people charge has gone up significantly since around April 2010.

If I ever sell stuff on there, I do $1 reserve mostly, as listing a buy now or reserve of even $4, never got much bidding action. And I preferred to sell bulk lots, as you get rid of a whole lot at once and it helps fund buying more clothes for DD in next size. I always check what people are asking price wise on similar things and make mine cheaper. As 1. I want it to sell and 2. I want it to be a good deal and I get that babies cost a lot, so helping save someone money, makes me feel good.

I found though, the most well off people, actually sell things for the fairest prices and you do get a great bargain from them. As they simply want to get rid of it and don't care about gaining much back. And I've found the people who aren't so rich, often are out for as much as they can get, in most cases, but not all. We aren't well off, we are poor, so I make sure I price things so people get a good deal. Say like $25 for 40 items, so that's a huge bargain and I always did bulk labelled lots real cheap too. As I think, what would I want to be paying.

Secondhand shops can be ok price wise. Though Mary Potter Hospice shop I found is a big rip off, as is Savemart. A skirt was $12 at Mary Potter Hospice shop and normal, unlabelled jeans were $15 at Savemart and babies clothes started mostly at $7!

Where I have gotten the best deals is Trash Palace. A cot for $15, stroller in great condition for $5, feeding chair fully functional $20, Peg Perego highchair also fully functional $5, playpen $15, couch $15, computer chair $3, Activity Walker(fisher price) in good condition $3. And I just helped someone I met randomly at St Vinnies pick up a 3 wheeler for $15, as the cheapest at St Vinnies was $100

I think the best deals I ever got on TM were while I was pregnant. And that was Milano Travel System with the pram, base and capsule for $150, edinburgh immaculate rocker $15 and cot with mattress $95 and 0-6 month labelled bulk lot for $50. Oh and a safety gate for $35 and the lady made sure she gave me the cheapest postage too.

I must admit, I have backed out of 1 TM purchase due to excessive postage amount and working out I'd be spending more then I could buy it for brand new.

The pick-ups not allowed thing brasses me off, esp when they charge so much! Was looking at a gorgeous dolls cot, brand new and unpainted, so we could have decorated it to match what she already has, but they were charging almost as much as the blasted thing was listed for to post (mdf panels that can be assembled and dismantled), and didnt allow pick-ups... what was worse was the trader was registered in Manukau City, so I'd have paid $20 something to have it couriered within a 10km radius?! No freaking way! I dont buy alot on Tm clothes wise, bit did recently buy pp overalls for Charlie pickup and only paid $1 and they were pretty tidy too

I do find that when looking thru some of the auctions i think hmm i seen that for x at shop what are they thinking! I always check the cost of postage first and take that into account i have had a couple of people return $ in parcel as its worked out cheaper another way.

i dont buy clothing for baby of trade me ...... i am far to fussy all of dd clothes are brandnew and 99% pumpkin patch .. ill be first to admit ive spent alot of $$ on clothes for her ekk but we don't plan on number 2 for 5-6yrs. i do try and buy stuff on sale tho nothing worse then going in the next day and its on bloody sale!!! also brought all dds girl stuff brand new too as we didnt have ANYTHING! i did look at a bassinet 2nd hand and wasnt alot more to buy brandnew i buy a few things off there tho that are brand new eg amber bead necklaces, a sling etc
i find trademe fantastic for furnatur/homewaree (i like old styled stuff) and have brought a few dresses for myself in perfect condition that were $150+ rrp for less then $50

I got an awesome deal on a 3rd hand touchwood cot! It is still in great condition having been through 2 kids with the first owner, 1 with the second and now my dd! I got it for $170 and the seller also through in her mattress which she hadn't taken the plastic off plus a stroller. Bargain imo!

lol QB, i bought a cot set for $20 which i thought was a bargain considering the amount of stuff it had... she then quoted $17 for postage (after auction ended, she refused to find out prior to auction ending!) cos she'd bought a bag and was charging me for that too... if it were me I'd have bundled it in a (clean) rubbish bag or a similar large plastic bag and only charged for actual postage. However, I just bought something from Christchurch yesterday (for $15) and was quoted $50 for postage I asked the lady if she would be kind enough to get me another quote and she came back with $67!!! I generally buy my kids stuff from TnT, with B being in school uniform, a lot of his clothes dont get much wear out of them, and are in good enough condition to pass onto my sister who has 4 boys younger than him, so at the end of the day we get more than my moneys worth out of them. Jaes stuff has been taking a fair bit of punishment lately as shes not long started walking (no matter how much I vacuumed she'd still get grey patches on her knees?! ) so again, el cheapo stuff from TnT suits us, and seems to hold its shape pretty well too. The only PP gear she has now is 2nd hand off TM or bought privately from friends whose kids have outgrown it.

As for prams, I've scored 2 brilliant prams for pretty cheap prices, a decent steelcraft 3 wheeler for $50 and a tandem 3 wheeler (front and back, instead of side-by-side, and folds up about the same size as a single!) for $125, in really good nic too!

For smaller sizes it's awesome, not so great at the moment though. I got in contact with a local seller who listed her DD's bulk clothes and I get clothes off her now for $1 per item and avoid TM altogether there. The 9-12 month sizing and 12-18 month sizing gets confusing and I don't bother anymore on trademe

I've managed to find quite a few cheap as bulk lots for both LO's. I got 86 items for aboy for $20 and only 2 or 3 things had to be biffed.   Although now I just trawl the Op Shops every week and pickup stuff when I see it. I have found a lot new/almost new stuff for $1 or less.

I've bought the odd thing off TM for Isla, but I'm a self confessed snob lol and only buy brand new stuff.... not into second hand stuff personally, unless it's from family. I find you can get some quite cool stuff for fairly cheap from people who have been given gifts from family overseas who obviously haven't thought about the fact our seasons are opposite to theirs iykwim, so I've got some cool UK branded stuff for Isla that has never been worn for quite cheap.
I used to buy all Isla's clothes from PP but it's just too expensive. I now get a lot of her clothes from Kmart. You can get really cute 2 piece sets (like leggings with a tunic dress) for $9!! And shorts and t-shirts etc for only $4! My fave shop at the moment tho is Cotton On Kids. Such cool stuff and really cheap too!! As we aren't having any more children I've started selling bulk lots in sizes. I put them as a $10 start more to cover the time of getting it onto TM and happy if it sells over that. I have for each age group done 2 x listing as with twins there are double ups. Have been able to sell to other people having twins as they have got themselves a true bulk amount of clothes for a very cheap price.

But there is a thrill in selling items on TM. I sold an ergo back pack for more than I bought it for....had to send it to Aussie but was ok with that.

What does annoy me is people selling bulk items and it 's say three items. I got DD's newborn stuff off trade me but only in bulk lot $1 reserve sales. Now I've looked at bulk lots and its all so expensive and because its "last season" I think whats the point. I went to TWH and got her about 7shirts, 2shorts, pjs, a rash shirt and boardshorts for $60 that was without a sale.

At TWH they still sell things in her age group in a set of three. Some of the stuff on TM is not worth it, too expensive. There are some good bargains, I guess it depends what you are wanting. I find I can spend hours on there if I don't have a plan of what I want.

We have started buying the boys clothes though at a shop in Albany which is a factory outlet, they are very cheap and really well made - baby brands like Kaboosh etc, and they have bigger kids items too. I always lurk around the baby gear section on trademe hoping for a deal. I brought my change table for $50, but i think it was only so cheap because im in a smaller town and wouldnt get as much interest as it would in Chch or Aucks for example.

I hope to sell all the baby stuff that gets outgrown - i don't want more and don't have anyone to pass it on to. I'm hearing bulk lots with $1 reserves are the way to go? I've paid more than on-sale price for a dress once, but that was because I had a devastated 4yo who's favourite dress had been stolen from kindy & it was no longer sold in shops. I've bought bulk lots of kids clothes that had cheap buy nows but haven't seen anything lately. I still buy a lot of renovation bits & furniture. What annoys me is people who go into our local Hospice shop & buy a heap of stuff at 50c then sell it on TM. I was holding a great jacket for dd5y while looking at other things & a woman snatched it off me, hitting dd (in sling) & shoving me into rack, saw it listed for $25 buy now the next day, it sold pretty quickly. Kmart have some great kids clothes at really resonable prices . I buy heaps of amelias clothes from there and im always getting compliments on them /

Trademe is definatly a rip off when it comes to kids clothes, i simply dont know where people get off asking SO much money for second hand clothes , i pretty much always put a $1 reserve on anything im selling  ( and i always sell clothes in excellent condition ) . I think its becomming a rip off on lots of things now , esspecially considering the shops have been having really good sales . i guess its good for people that arent in major cities that want clothes from shops they dont have in the towns/ citys they live in . .

I think TWH has some really good stuff & often get the boys things there. I don't go to farmers much any more. T&T have very cute baby stuff. A friend goes to kmart & gets really good price stuff, must check that out. I buy PP now & then for a good going out outfit, I have found the outlet store don't cater much for boys but have not been there for awhile.
I get stuff from a friend but not my SIL she gives to her friends & gives me crap stuff I throw out, rather not get anything.

And wait for sales.

And anyone that complains about TnT or TWH being bad quality, a friend of mine who works for TnT told me that it's all the Farmers, PP, etc clothes that are 'seconds' and didn't get picked for that season iygwim.

I think its all about timing when selling. If you are selling a popular item & not many up for sale you have a good chance of getting a good price.

A friend sold a tent for more than in the shops, she added a comment to say when the bidding got higher than the cost that she would remove the bid so the bidder could get it from a shop but they refused her offer & ended up paying $200 more & was really happy with it. Go figure.

I always go on feedback & if someone has bad & warranted feedback I will remove their bid & blacklist them.

I wont buy stuff where the postage is incorrect & I always refund extra postage. I don't sell for under $6 not worth it.

It can be funny sometimes as I have listed items that don't sell even if offered for a lot less & then re listed them for more than before & have sold...but I guess it depends on what you sell & when...& if you are honest...

I am doing a big clean out & will get rid of the kids stuff they don't use.

I found the same thing a long time ago so stopped buying kids clothes, cos by the time you bid and win and THEN pay postage (and I'm sure people put the postage up to make even more money cos when I post things it doesn't cost that much!) it's more than what you'd pay in the shop!  Also, trademe themselves are rip-offs charging soo much once you sell the item - especially if item only sells for a couple of dollars and they take their cut ($1.00) it's not worth the time or energy for you!

I ust buy the kids clothes new now, as bargains seem very hard to come by on there now. I only buy things off there if they are things I can't find in the shops. The price people charge for PP is ridiculous when you can go to the outlet shops and usually get them cheaper (esp when you add postage)...
We were looking for a phil and teds stroller before xmas and the prices some people wanted is just stupid. Like a 2 year old stroller with some accessories and they wanted about $150 more than they cost in the shops now! people don't seem to understand that you may have paid that much for it a few years ago but they come down in price in the shops so you can't expect the same price you paid....

I have bought some really good clothes of TM. I recently bought a PP top & shorts near new & they look like they have not been worn, for DS1 sz10 for &10 +p&p it was worth $40. I am pretty fussy what I get him as when you buy for older kids they are usually well worn, meaning crap. But baby stuff I got really good items.
I always factor in postage, I was bidding on some PJ last year thinking I was getting a bargain but once I added postage I could really buy a new pair...lucky I was out bid.

I think some put emotional prices on things & are not realistic. It is also easy to get caught up in the bidding excitement. Yeah, I don't buy clothes on TM, people just want too much and sometimes it's not even good quality! DP found a nice dress for me and the person said 'Lovely green dress' - it wasn't green at all! It was RED! And the hem had come undone and was obvious in one of the pictures but they denied it...

I dont really buy off TM anymore. I agree with you i dont find it cheaper at all. The only things i look for are things i cant find in shops. Like new shoes for DD that fit correctly

depends what you are looking for I think, I do agree that some people seem to want waaaaay too much for second hand kids clothes!  I have brought some books and cars toys for my son from there lately at good prices but I no longer look on there for clothes for the kids, you are right most of the time unless you find a good bargain it is cheaper to go buy them new!

Also, when will people learn to advertise the sizes correctly? Like I have brought things in the 12-18 months range, which sellers say are size 1 and I get the item and it's size 6-9 months, which isn't helpful, even 6-12 months I could get some use out of. And I have asked people to clarify the size, still to get the item and find out, it is the wrong size. That's were a lot of expectant parents, well mostly mums and parents to young babies often go to get a good deal.

....but these days, is it really a good deal?...

After postage, you are often spending more money then buying things new in the shops and often sales in the shops are cheaper then trademe.

People ask so much for PP and other labels, even though they are secondhand. They seem to try and gain back as much of that money as possible when re-selling. Do people forget that once something leaves the shop, it becomes secondhand once worn/used and decreases it's value by 70%?...

Who else is finding that trademe is increasing becoming more and more of a rip off?
