I guess it can sometimes be hard to see how things might be if we were in another parents' shoes. I wonder how much your friend knows of how you see their parenting? If someone in my life thought *I* was ignorant and abusing my daughter just because I was unconcerned about what Plunket have to say (and this could be true, given that I chose not to register with them so I didn't have to hear their "advice" and could go about doing what works best for us under the least amount of stress), I'd be having some very frank discussions with them about the state of our friendship.

I think you owe it to them, and yourself, to be upfront and honest about your concerns - ask some more questions to get a fuller picture of what's going on. If it's a thing they have about Plunket, you could always suggest the mum gets in touch with an organisation like La Leche League or Breastfeeding NZ (run by Ministry of Health), who generally aren't as rigid with their guidelines and advice.

I often don't "give a damn" about what people think of my parenting or choices, especially so because some of them are quite alternative, but generally my instincts are pretty spot on and if I were worried about either of my children I would seek the support I need, simple.

my girl was 5.3 kg at 3 months. That is a good weight but still 15th percentile for girls at her age. So on the light side of average 12 week weight. So does that put it in perspective for you. ?

HippyMama I said that because of their lack of concern not because she is small. They don't care that Plunket are literally in a panic over the babys weight (the mother told me her plunket nurse was panicking at one of their meetings). Have you actually asked them other questions about what baby does or how she is developing?

Even with a babe that sleeps well / often during the day I don't know that I'd be overly worried - my girl has always been a reasonably consistent daytime sleeper and at 5 months was having 3x naps a day, so often would be asleep if we had visitors.

I agree that the parents' stature isn't necessarily going to dictate how bubs would or should turn out, previous generations on both sides could have genetic influence and they might not all be large.

I think it's actually taking it a bit too far to insinuate you think they are abusing their child just because she is small? Hmm to add to that, the fact she was born 3.9kg and is only 5kg at 5mths doesn't particularly bother me. My bubs was a large 4.375 kg at birth and only 7kg at 5mths, shes only managed to get up to 7.3kg at 6 mths, but shes very alert and happy. (Except the last few days but shes sick poor wee thing)
How about you just ask about her sleeping patterns? The mother says she is a very good sleeper so ask for a general routine(ish) day. That should give you a good idea of bubbies energy levels. I honestly only see her when she is sleeping and her mum always goes on about how well she sleeps. I know she giggles (her mum has it as her ringtone on her mobile) but other than that I'm not sure what she does milestone wise.

Both of her parents are very very big people as well, so its not like she is from a petite family. I am disgusted at the way her mum and dad just ignore plunket. I agree, plunket can be a bit OTT, but if it were me I would think about what the plunket nurse said, esp if they seemed worried.

Her parents just seem so ignorant. I don't get it. I feel extremely sad for the baby. To me, its a form of child abuse. I agree with the others when they wonder how alert the baby is etc, that should give you a pretty good pointer as to whether something is up or not. She might just be a wee baby.
I do find it hard to imiagine a 5 mnth old at 5kg but that is only cause my girl was bigger than that when she was born! She was 5.2kg at birth and 8.7kg at 5 months....... so she is at the top end of the scale. At 5 months old, my DD2 probably only weighed 5kg - but you know, I never took her to Plunket, so I have no idea exactly how much she weighed (3.2kg at birth also, I think). She was, and still is, just little. Back then she was alert, breastfeeding often and pooping equally as often (as is normal), sleeping well for her age - and so to us, it *didn't* matter.

To me though it does sound like your concern is genuine, but perhaps there is some other underlying medical issue going on - and that the problem is not just with weight and the babe's stature alone?

Maybe look at her weight gain and see how much weight she puts on? DD was 4.570kgs at birth (she lost 610gms in her first 3 days), and 2 days ago she was 6.94kgs. DD has only ever put on around 100gm a week, and my PN was concerned at her 3 month check but after weighing her 2 weeks later and at 5 months shes worked out that she doesnt gain a lot of weight but just plods along nicely. I think DD is on the 50th percentile now, down from above the 97th percentile she was born, however both DH and I were averaged sized babies so shes just tracking along average.
How much is your friends DD feeding? sleeping? being awake for?
I think its a little odd for the parents to not be concerned at all, maybe try suggesting they get a second opinion? (even if they see it as doing it to shut plunket up?)
I would def keep a close eye on her and see if anything changes, and listen to your gut, Im surprised at how often my gut is right! This is tricky one. DD was 5.24 kg at 5 months, she was 2.6 kg at birth (1 month prem). She had a lot of monitoring first year and yes, she is still skinny.

That said, had first cold at 14 months, no other sickness, and is lively and alert. At 15 months she is about 7.2 KG. Not every child can be in the top percentile, in fact half of all kids should be below there and someone has to be all the bottom as that's how the curve works! Its not like school where you get a grade and 50 percent is a pass.   Plus I think there so much pressure for babies to be rolling fat and yep, you get some funny looks if they aren't. My girls paed said that a formula feed bub at the top end of the scale is actually more worrying than a BF one at the bottom end.

My girl eats like a horse, when well and not teething and do get peeved with people insinuating that we not feed her enough.

That said...given this bubs birth weigh etc, if I were then I'd seek professional advice . My bub was prem and 2kg at birth. At 5 months she had cracked 6kg (just) and she's still tracking along the 15th percentile for weight.

Your friend's baby of 5kg at 5 months is off the bottom of the charts (below the 3rd percentile) so it is a bit concerning - more so because she was in the 85th percentile at birth. Although in general I hate that Plunket try to fit every baby on those graphs it does seem a bit worrying.

Like the others - I'd go more on happy and healthy. A 5 month old should be starting to make sounds, and smiling and starting to interact with the world. They still sleep a lot, but are quite alert for 60-90 minutes before needing another sleep. Also like the others - it depends how seriously concerned you are as to how you might act. Agree completely!

Although Lily was only 6lbs 13 oz (3.08kg) she was healthy but gained weight like nobodies business lol! She was 8kg at 5 months!

Like everyone said - each baby is different so if she is happy, and healthy and lots of wet/dirty nappies then maybe it's fine, I know one of the Feb mums babies who was over due by almost 2 weeks only weighed 6kg at 6 months so might just be the way they are...

But the sleeping all the time, what do you mean exactly, e.g she sleeps well for day and night sleeps or she sleeps all the time and has very little up time? Hope that makes sense...

My boys are on the larger size (and boys are diff from girls) but he was 8.09kg at 5mths (3.9kg at birth)
If she is always sleeping then as Rovic says she possibly doesn't have much energy. Does she seem to eat/feed much at all?

I have read somewhere that bubbas are supposed to double their birthweight by 6 months. My bubba is a bit of a light weight, but so is his dad and bubba is definitly a daddy's boy. But as someone above said, it's also about how they are - alert, happy etc. If she is always sleeping it may be bacause she doesn't have enough energy to be awake and doing things. I guess what you do depends on how good a friend she is and if she would listen to you. Or on how strongly you feel about the situation.

hmm 3.8kg, thats around 8lb 3oz, and thats what my DD was at birth and at 5 months she was 7.19kg and fully breastfed.
It does sound like the baby is underweight and the parents should be listening to plunket, but there isnt really much you can do, the parents are the ones who have to take action.

Well the other thing is, is the little girl healthy? Healthy babies tend to look healthy and be happy, you know have that glow. Plenty of wet and dirty nappies etc Not skinny like a scarecrow. It does sound quite little - I have a nearly 4 month old who is 6.2kgs and she is on the 50th percentile. A friend of mine has a 5 month old baby and she only weighs 5kg. Plunket has told her that her DD is underweight, but she doesn't listen and thinks that Plunket are picking on her.

Her DD still looks like a newborn and has only gained 1.2kg since birth (she lost a bit after she was born as most babies do, and it took over a month to gain it back).

I am concerned. I think she is too small and I am also concerned at the fact that her mum doesn't seem to care. Her DH is also the same. He's like "Why does it matter how much she weighs?"

What IS the average weight for a 5 month old? Is she underweight and what should I do? OR should i just keep out of it?
