Gosh, this whole cloth nappy business is so over whelming, I love the idea, but I have no idea what all the names/nicknames etc.. mean! are you able to give me a run down? I'm only 4 months preggers so, no experience yet either! Just jumping in here to add my 2 cents worth lol

Im only 6 months preggers and so havnt even USED cloth nappies yet haha! But am obviously planning to. and...

I have spent 6 months researching... sometimes HOURS a day, prices, styles, Brands etc

And I decided to go with Itti Bitti's.

* Many reasons, mainly being that over all after trawling thru pages and pages of product reviews, by actual mums in NZ and Australia, they came out on top. Also I have found that even 2nd hand they are the top seller on Trade me, so paying $27 ish per nappie new doesnt seem so bad when u think even after 1 or 2 kids you might get $10-$15 for it, and lastly they are quite Dad & grandparent friendly with colour coded snaps and no pocket stuffing required!

We have gone with SIO's small and Med, and will probably move to Tutto's when we get to large.

Some advice I wished someone had given me.

If you are on Facebook, "like" every cloth nappy group you can find (there are about 10!) Its the best place to hear about sales and discounts on top brand nappies.

You can combine MCN's with prefolds (especially early on with a newborn going thru 10-12 changes a day), using the itti bitti outter as the water proof wrap (just pull out all the snap in inserts), prefolds are cheap as chips and will extend your stash for not too much $$$

I know everyone has differing opinions, and im not here to bag other brands or options, hell I might be back here in 6 months time regretting every itti I ever brought! This is just what I know and would like to share with you

I totally second the comment about getting a hire kit. We've bought almost ALL our cloth nappies off TM and been really pleased with most of them. We also use Babyluv and until recently used them all night with no leaks or problems. We've only stopped using them cos Clodagh's developed a sensitivity to microfleece . So we're back to plain cotton like the Popolinis.

But we've also purchased Kushies, Popolinis, imse Vimses, Ecobubs and HEAPS of others etc off TM and had no problems. If they don't fit/suit/whatever you just on-sell them and normally get at least your money back

But... I use the same nappies on Alex for day and night. During the day the only last 3-4 hours, but are fine for 10-12 hours at night. wev got 2 babyland ones that work good they fit isabella quite well shes now on the meduim setting.
We got 6 mybaby nappys and they are good for daytime use .
And i got a itti bitti tutto which i have found awesome for night time it hasnt leaked

I really like Babyland (the newer ones) and Baby Luv nappies. We only use them during the day so they suit us well.

I started off with Ittis and ended up getting rid of them all for babyluv and babyland nappies, they work really well on my girl, no issues with leaks which we did get with Ittis, and I've had them about 5 months now and they are still in great condition? Hey anyone no much about the "babyluv" brands. Look good have already purchased 5 on TM. Waiting to arrive and will feed back how they are. Only $26 for 5 naps with 10 inserts. Filthy cheap i know but have a feeling it cos was clossing at a funny time and was overlooked by others who were all bidding on the 15 pack of same brand which went for $120 dollars.

Not too concerned if these are not the best quality as for 26 dollars i could by one itti or 5 of these so i'm sure they;ll do trick at least in short term.

I can't remember when I started using mine, but I have two sets from TM, mainly because I don't have the money to buy the well known brands. The ones I have are really good, haven't had any problems. I use these during the day and pop-ins at night.

Have tried my TM ones at night and they do the trick but do still get leaks towards morning so decided to use pop-ins at night.

DD is now 14 months and I'm sure I've been using these since before Christmas 09. I have babyland ones which I find better than a second lot I bought (unsure of the brand). My ones I got from a lady down here in CHCH and she now goes under a company name of EcoTotson TM.

I am using the Nappy company ones at present. Got them cheap in one of the dollar reserve auctions. Am using them with a mybaby hemp insert as well as the microfibre one they came with an so far cannot fault them. OK so I've only been using them for about 6 weeks so cant comment on their longevity, but I actually prefer them to the tots bots ones that I paid about 5 x the price for! I say if you can pick some up cheap then go for it! I second the idea fo using prefold for a new bub tho, I doubt any OSFA would fit any newborn well. I have brought both the mybaby and the babyland nappies. I find I use the mybaby ones more, i prefer the velcro, but the babyland ones i have also found to be good. You have to be careful of which traders you buy off as some are selling the cheaper version of the babyland ones (yes there is a rip-off version). If you get the original they are made waaaay better. Thanks for all of the feedback so far. It is great to hear others points of view about cloth nappies.
I guess that the "you get what you pay for" idea is probably what I suspected but I was ever being a hopeful as I do love a good deal (but only if it actually is a good deal)!!

i would say to make the investment and go for a good brand. I've tried babyland and mybaby on TM. And got rid of both pretty smartly. I bought alot of cheaper nappies pre DS. and I don't have any of them now. I got rid of the lot and started new. I took alot of money but it's been well worth it.

Try the hire kit to find whats best for your bebe.

But if you wnat to start purchasing before Bebe arrives I do know that most people find that you cna't go wrong with prefolds with covers.

We bought Mybaby and Babyland, off trademe. Both are still going strong 6 mths on. They are both OSFM, BUT the Mybaby ones are bigger (longer through the middle) so will probably last longer. They come with inserts, the Mybaby ones are still going strong but the babyland ones already have some fraying and holes around the edges where the overlocking hasn't held together. So maybe avoid them.

Do try second hand nappies, especially if they are a reputable brand and have been part of a large rotation of nappies, only for one child, and well looked after.

The ones are TM are cheap for a reason...and you have to ask yourself why. Most of them are the same nappy re-branded and most come from China so at the price they sell you gotta ask yourself what the work conditions are like where they are made if the manufacturer can onsell them so cheap.

The materials used are poor quality and will not last.

TBH I think that you get what you pay for here.

I only know of a couple of people who have tried the TM brands and they have both ended up buying the mainstream ones in the end as the TM ones just didn't last the distance.

Particularly if you are planning more than one child, I would make the investment.

If money is an issue you could always make your own pockets. My homemade pockets are currently on their second child and still going very strong!

I am expecting my first and want to get some pocket nappies. How do you choose (brandwise)? I have been watching a number of auctions on Trade me (new nappies) but so far have been reluctant to buy any. I don't feel I have enough info to part with the cash until I know the brands are any good. I guess I looked to trade me for slightly cheaper options than buying them in the stores.

Has anyone bought cloth nappies off trade me? Are they any good? Leak free? Adjustable for different sizes etc?
