Aston managed to get out of his cot from about 9 months onwards. Drove me nuts. But we co-slept most of the time anyway. Now he just sleeps in a bed. I put pillows as a "just in case he falls out" guard. But he rarely does. You can always try with a matress on the ground.

i have no probs with him going to bed and sleep on his own at night because it's dark. Harder during the day - he gets up unless I stay with him and almost hold him in bed til he goes to sleep (more our issue than an all round issue )

We put C into a big bed at 19m and he adjusted really well - he still moves around a fair bit but stays in the bed (we were surprised!)

We have moved all his books to the top of the dresser and he has just grown tall enough to reach our (very high) door handles so will probably get a safety lock for that this weekend. I think the only option is to put him in a bed, you dont want him to fall climbing out of the cot.

Guess it is time to sort out the room and pull the sides off by the sounds of it!

TaliP, we have tried sleeping bags in the past but he hates wearing them unfortunately! When they start climbing out of the cot, then its time for a bed Sounds like he is ready for sure.

Make his room as boring as possible and safe, and stick a baby gate at his door, problem solved.

Have you tried a sleeping bag? I have heard lots of babies don't/can't stand up in them so that might work if you are not ready to move to a toddler bed. All I know is that when they are climbing out of the cot, it's time to go to a bed. It's a pain, but it's the safest thing to do. Yep! Kaela (17mos) climbed out of her cot just a couple of weeks ago. Her cot is not adjustable so she had to go straight into a big bed. I was hoping she would stay in the cot for longer as she did not settle easily for sleep, and because she shares a bedroom with her 5yo sister (who has lots of little treasures).

So anyway we child-proofed the room - there are some toys but no little papers she can get to - and the door handle is already high so she can't open it. (Otherwise I would install a slide lock until she is older). And whaddya know, she settles into bed far better than she ever did in the cot. It did take her a day or two to get used to it, but three weeks on, she climbes into bed by herself and waits for the covers to be put on. (Very cute!)

So DS 20months has just figured out how to climb out of his cot.....I figured we had a few more months at least as he is quite short....

Anyway, I don't really want to take the sides of the cot off yet( his cot converts to a toddler bed), I don't think he is ready. I can just picture him trashing his room in the middle of the night He can also open doors so I didnt think I would need to get locks this early.

Has anyone had a toddler do this at an earlier than expected?   What did you do?
